The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman yesterday accused Sen. Richard J. Durbin of insulting American soldiers with a "grievous error in judgment" by comparing U.S. treatment of al Qaeda suspects to the crimes of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Pol Pot, and demanded that the Senate's No. 2 Democrat apologize.
The rebuke followed a similar rebuke by the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who called Mr. Durbin "totally out of line."
Republican lawmakers lined up to condemn the remarks as making the war on terror more dangerous for American troops.
Some were particularly angry about the Al Jazeera Arab-language news station, which had posted Mr. Durbin's Nazi comparison made in a Tuesday night floor speech.
"That's horrible. That's our worst nightmare," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, about the posting by the network, which the administration accuses of stirring up anti-Americanism.
In a Tuesday night speech to the Senate, after reading an e-mail from a FBI agent, Mr. Durbin said: "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This as the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."

What is the difference between Dick Durbin's rhetoric and Osama bin Laden's rhetoric? Actually, I can't even recall bin Laden calling American soldiers nazis. This man must be impeached or forced to resign if he thinks US soldiers are so evil. I don't want him having anything to do with how this country is run or the war is fought.
Well, to start with, Dick Durbin isn't Native American...
Oh? Neither is Ward Churchill?
I can tell you what they have in common... They both belong to a minority, the liberal minority.
why aren't Democrats lining up to condemn? How low is the Democrat Party going to go?? what a bunch of Quislings
"Angry"
That is what "Chicken Liver" Republicrats feel when one of their fellow Rats on the other side of the isle commits a treasonous act.
The Republicrats ought to be calling for that Dick Durbin's resignation. He has given aid and comfort to the enemy.
I'm sure most Democrat politicians weren't offended by Durbin's remarks. They're waiting for poll numbers to come in to see how they should play it.
Somewhere out there Zell Miller has to be shaking his head and rolling his eyes as he listens to the latest crazy talk from the likes of Durbin and Dean.
Because the best interests of the Democratic Party comes before the best interests of the United States of America in their play book........
We tarred and feathered out traitors back then... then we ran them out of town to Canada.
Do you think that is still an option?
If Democrats think it's in their best interest to bash our soldiers, they'll continue to have disappointing Election Days.
C-span reruns Conyer's DowningStreetMemo charade ad nauseum..but will they reshow this ?..Nah..
That's ok. Fox is going over it again this morning.
If we have Supreme Court vacancies this summer, Republicans should use all these crazy quotes from people like Durbin, Kennedy and Dean to illustrate to the American people that it's the Democrat politicians who are out of the mainstream, not conservative judicial nominees. Then if Democrats try to filibuster a Scalia-like justice, the American people would gladly support the nuclear option.
Yea, a little back pedaling going on here.
The Nazi's, Stalin, Pol Pot employed "rough interrogation" methods as they slaughtered MILLIONS of INNOCENT people simply based on who or what they believed as compared to TERRORIST who stated objective is to kill Americans.
The SOB Durbin should be impeached
That's actually okay with me. I couldn't watch it yesterday but I did see it rerun. It was hilarious. They were packed into that broomcloset like sardines. They could barely move. The woman who lost a son in Iraq (may God rest his soul) was preening and basking in the attention. It's a good thing for Joe Wilson with his de Villepin wannabe hairdo wasn't under oath or they'd be marching him off in handcuffs. All in all it was quite the show.
Should Donald Rumsfeld's Pentagon employ "rough" or "soft" interrogation techniques on terrorists and sworn enemies of the United States who are captured on the battlefield?
I agree but I don't thing the Republicrats have the cujones to try such a feat.
Right now, they should be calling for the resignation of that Dick Durbin. He is treasonous and that is a fact.
