Christianity's Best Argument

Read:
1 Peter 3:13-17

Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. —1 Peter 3:15

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 1-3

cover What's the best argument we can give those who ask why we have accepted Jesus as our Savior? How can we most persuasively bear witness to our faith?

"Always be ready," Peter urged, "to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15). The Greek term for "reason" is apology. That doesn't mean a weak-kneed excuse; it means a convincing argument.

Philosopher William Alston of Syracuse University has written very helpful books in defense of the Christian faith. He has something to say that should encourage all of us: "The final test of the Christian scheme comes from trying it out in one's life, testing the promises the scheme tells us God has made, following in the way enjoined on us by the church, and seeing whether it leads to the new life of the Spirit."

Don't think that because you aren't a philosopher or a scholar that you can't be an apologist. You can bear witness to the truth and power of the gospel. Your life can be your own best argument—your best defense of your faith in Jesus Christ—to anyone who asks why you believe.

So put your faith into practice. Let people see the difference Jesus makes. —Vernon Grounds

O that my life may useful be
As I serve Jesus faithfully;
And may the world see Christ in me—
This is my earnest prayer. —Hess

People will listen to you carefully if they see you living faithfully.

A U.S. soldier speaks with Iraqi boys during a patrol in the al-Baya area south of Baghdad on Tuesday.

That's right. The standard issue rifle of the U.S. Military. Lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed rifle designed for either automatic or semi-automatic fire through use of a selector lever.

Marines attempt to enter a house during a raid in the restive city of Ramadi, Iraq, on Tuesday.

Hi, we are from the Nielsen Ratings Service, and we just want to ask you a few questions concerning your television viewing habits.

A U.S. soldier inspects the remnants of a car bomb that exploded in Kirkuk, Iraq, on Monday. Four policemen, a woman and a child were injured.

A recent Iraqi government automobile surplus auction had some real creampuffs.

U.S. sailors guard the frigate Kauffman upon its arrival in Karachi, Pakistan, on Monday for joint naval exercises.

I must admit, I would never have been able to find Pakistan on a naval chart.

Members of Operational Detachment Alpha 025, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Stuttgart, Germany, practice mounted break contact drills using the “Gunvees” on the range in Mauritania. More than 1,000 U.S. military personnel in seven West African countries are providing military training to local troops in exercise “Flintlock.”

Despite the official prohibition, a number of the Troops continue to go "Four-Wheeling" with Government equipment.

U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Kurt Rardin, left, of Roanoke, Va., and Lance Cpl. Troy Weber of Canton, Ohio, sleep in a house commandeered by Marines in Karabilah, 200 miles west of Baghdad on Sunday. About 1,000 U.S. Marines are participating in Operation Spear near the Iraqi-Syrian border town.

Amnesty International is now calling the Marine sleeping quarters another example of the "Gulag mentality" which is prevalent in the American military.

A U.S. Marine patrols outside a building where Marines believe insurgents tortured four men who were found handcuffed at the wrists and ankles and blindfolded in Karabilah on Saturday. During the second day of Operation Spear, Marines rescued the four men, found a noose, equipment for electro-shock torture and equipment to simulate drowning.

According to reliable reports from Reuter's caption writers, the insurgents were actually just working on their new macrame' hobby.

An Iraqi man sits on the floor Saturday with welts and lacerations across his back and arms from being tortured with electricity while held captive, according to the Marines. The man, along with three others, were discovered by Iraqi Security Forces and Marines from 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, inside what the Marines say was an insurgent torture chamber in the city of Karabilah, Iraq, during Operation Spear.

As of the writing of this caption, Senator "DICK" Durbin has not yet commented on the Senate floor concerning spurious claims of abuse by the benevolent insurgents in Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Joshua Padilla, left, hangs out with Mareo Ritter, 8, during a Big Brothers Big Sisters pool party at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in San Diego on June, 14. Padilla is one of a number of mentors for kids whose fathers or mothers are deployed on military missions.

Alamo Scout George Thompson of Salisbury, Mo., searches for the stone containing his name on June 16 during a visit to the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. About a dozen of what are believed to be fewer than 20 surviving members of the Alamo Scouts, the forerunners of the “Green Berets,” have gathered in Kansas. During World War II they crept deep behind Japanese lines in the Southwest Pacific at enormous risk to gather intelligence that was vital to pushing the enemy back.

Remember the Alamo Scouts!
