Allstate fires manager for Christian beliefs concerning homosexuality

Allstate has fired a manager because he expressed his Christian beliefs concerning homosexuality. Matt Barber was a manager in Allstate's Corporate Security Division. On his own time, and without identifying himself as an employee of Allstate, he wrote a column posted on several websites which was critical of same-sex marriage.

An outside homosexual group complained to Allstate about the column. Because of their support for the homosexual agenda, Barber was immediately fired and ushered off company property.

The message is clear: To work for Allstate one must not publicly express their Christian belief in the Bible's teaching on homosexuality. Barber was fired because he did. Homosexuals can criticize and condemn the Bible's teaching and they are welcomed, but Christians must remain silent.

TAKE ACTION

Allstate has sent a message to all their agents: If you are a Christian and believe the Bible's teaching on homosexuality, you will be fired. While Allstate touts its diversity, that diversity does not include Christian beliefs on homosexuality.

First, send Allstate Chairman Edward M. Liddy an email to register your complaint demanding both a public apology and reinstatement for Mr. Barber with back pay. Then call your local Allstate agent and tell him or her you will not be purchasing any insurance from them.

You can find a listing of Allstate agents in your area by clicking here . Tell the Allstate agent you will tell your friends about their disdain for Christians who believe the Bible's teaching on homosexuality.

That's exactly what he's done. He has a suit pending against Allstate under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits religious discrimination. Allstate is in for a very rough ride on this one.

You never know. However, Allstate tried to deny him unemployment compensation, but Barber stressed to the unemployment office that he did not intend for the affiliation to be included in the bio. Allstate argued to the agency that Barber should not be given unemployment, but upon investigation, the agency agreed with Barber's contention and ruled he was entitled to the money.

Sounds to me like a finding of fact that the inclusion of his specific employment info was done without his consent.

Matt Works for Allstate Insurance Company as a Territorial Senior Manager in Allstate's Law and Regulation Corporate Security (Internal Fraud Investigations) Department.

He has filed suit. The Christian Law Association has provided assistance, and David Gibbs III, who represented Terri Schiavo's family, is representing him.

The initial status hearing is set for July 5th.

I personally think he has a strong case, and hope he wins it.

Having a political life, including writing editorials and opinion pieces for public consumption, might be looked down on by workplaces that don't want to have to deal with your political life. Everyone should be aware of this risk.

In most places, what Allstate did here was perfectly legal.

It is discrimination in hiring on the basis of religion, which is illegal in all 50 states.

They fired him for what he wrote, not for his religious beliefs.

Allstate is a mistake and will be in no state to insure me or mine.

Allstate can keep their good hands to themselves.

So, an employer should be able to fire an employee one day before the employee's retirement benefits/401K benefits vesting kicks in?

Why in the world would you hold to such a view?

I'm having trouble that MND invented all of that specificity without Matt having provided it.

He probably did provide it but it's entirely possible that HE didn't include it. I imagine that MND would ask his occupation etc to verify he's not a nut. I still don't see how the guy can be descriminated against for a personal view. Special interest groups want to silence all but their voices.

His writing was an expression of his religious beliefs.

Unless he provably attempted to portray his views as representative of Allstate, they fired him for his religion.

Yeah - I'm familiar with Title VII. And I don't think it provides as much protection as you think it does.

In 2 minutes I can come up with 10 ways an employer can fire/discipline an employee for what some might consider practing their religious beliefs & Title VII would offer no protection.

Title VII also covers employment conditions and discharge. It prohibits religions discrimination in employment. Indeed it, or current interpretations of it, currently require employers to make reasonable accommodations for employees' religious practices.

As noted by an earlier poster, the homosexual organization that got this guy fired could also be in real trouble since they induced Allstate to fire him illegally due to his protected, off premises, religious activities.

No, it's not. The First Amendment does not cover the actions of non-governmental actors or entities.

At my company, there are very strict policies regarding comments to the media in which the organization's name is used. I'd be very surprised if Allstate doesn't have the same kind of policy.

I submit he was fired for violating a policy.

Employers can fire people for whatever reason they like, more or less (or they SHOULD be allowed).
