WASHINGTON, June 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced an $850,000 demonstration grant to Iowa Workforce Development to establish three New Iowans Centers to help immigrants transition into their new communities and the workforce.

"One of the biggest and most immediate hurdles that many immigrants face when they arrive in our country is not being able to speak English. Knowing how to speak the language is essential to advancement in our economy." said Chao. "This $850,000 grant will establish New Iowans Centers which will help newcomers gain valuable language skills, job training, and job placement and other helpful services, while in the process help build strong communities."

The grant, awarded through the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, will establish New Iowans Centers at local One Stop Career Centers in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The centers will provide assistance with language and occupational training, resettlement, community service referrals and job placement with local area employers who are seeking skilled workers.

Over a three year period, the goals of the project are to speed the transition of new Americans into communities; promote stability and employment with good wages, and increase local economic development.

"These services will give new Americans who want to increase their marketable skills the ability to compete for good jobs in demand by businesses competing in the global economy," said Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "This demonstration will also help determine if projects like the one being announced today are expanded to assist other new Americans here to fulfill their dreams."

Supportive services, including documentation assistance, understanding civic responsibilities and legal assistance will also be available to help individuals become established and provide for their families

"I wonder how much Iowa is spending on occupational training, resettlement, etc. on its NATIVE Iowans whose jobs are either lost to outsourcing,..."

If they resettle in Texas they can find jobs for which they are qualified and if not we do have occupational training for those with no skills.

I speak with them. They're usually very upfront about it.

When I walk into a business and start speaking with the employees about their retirement plan, I can tell within five minutes if I'm speaking to mostly illegals or to legal guest workers. It's an attitude. This is just among Mexican and Central American illegals that I have met. I have had very little contact with any of our massive influx of illegal Greeks.

Are they legal? If so then you don't have a problem with it? Obviously Iowa thinks it's good for Iowa. Who am I to say they are wrong?

Of course I have NO problem if they're legal. That is my only criteria. Legals want to assimilate and learn to speak English. The illegals are a whole different story.

I agree. I have no problem with LEGAL immigration. I highly doubt that these Iowa centers are going to verify legal residency, though. They won't get too many Latino visitors if word gets out that they are checking I.D.

Who am I to say they are wrong?

An American. This is a DOL grant going to these Iowa centers. That's your tax money. Mine, too. We should at least be able to demand that help be given only to "New Iowans" that are legal guest workers.

Agree with you 100%. Illegals are the problem. We cannot continue to be wishy-washy about the illegal invasion. They do not obey rules or laws. They put their own self interest above those waitng in line legally. I despise the illegals.

Maybe they are legal. Do you know?

No, and that is precisely my point: THEY SHOULD BE VERIFYING! If a "New Iowan" comes in for help learning English or acquiring some new skill, he/she should be willing and able to provide proof of legal residency. The Center should then verify that proof. Sencillo, ¿no?

"Maybe" doesn't cut it. They must be screened to make certain they're legal. Comprende'?

"They do not obey rules or laws." That's what I told Vicente Fox when I wrote him. It's been over a month, and he still hasn't responded to my letter:

No merecen quedarse aquí.

Sinceramente,

Los CIUDADANOS de los Estados Unidos de America

Dear Mr. Fox,

Don't tell us how to run our country, Vince. The US of A belongs to us, not to you or to the poor Mexicans you send here.

They are not "undocumented workers." They are ILLEGALS. They are invaders. They have violated our borders without permission, and are living and working here ILLEGALLY. If they want to live and work here, they must request permission through the LEGAL process of immigration. We are a country of laws, and the illegals do not respect our laws. They do not deserve to stay here.

What would happen to me if I entered Mexico without permission, and I took a job that "no Mexican would do"? Of course. I'd be thrown in jail.

Vincent, you are a shameless enemy of the United States of America. We are living in a time of war, and you dare to say that as a soverign nation we do not have the right to defend our borders? Fix your own country and economy, instead of sending us your poor and needy.

Sincerely,

The CITIZENS of the United States of America

Rod, Rod, Rod. "MAYBE" doesn;t cut it. "Maybe" is like putting lipstick on a pig. I have hopes that Iowa won't be as tolerant and as stupid as other states.

Lawyers? It's a job training center. Why would they need a staff of lawyers? All it takes is a phone call to the Social Security Administration.

I'll call one of these centers tomorrow and ask them if they verify legal status. I already know what the answer will be.

Resend your excellent letter. Please try to remember to tell me if you get a reply.
I'd send it twice daily...lol.

I need to get out of here.

Nite all.
