NEW YORK - Bob Woodward has offered to serve some of jailed reporter Judith Miller's time behind bars, and urged others to share her incarceration as well.
Miller, the New York Times reporter held in contempt for refusing to disclose her confidential source in the Valerie Plame case, was ordered to jail last Wednesday and could remain there for four months
Woodward, who appeared on Larry King Live Monday night, said journalists should be willing to help Miller out since she is essentially fighting for all reporters' rights by withholding her confidential source and giving up her freedom. Here is the transcript from the portion of the show:
WOODWARD: No. Clearly, we're not above the law. But frequently, people disobey the law. And when you do so, you have to be willing to accept the consequences. And in this case, the consequences, I guess, are a four-month jail sentence, and Judy Miller's willing to do that, to stand on this principle of trust. You know, I...
KING: You said you would have done it, too?
WOODWARD: I would have done it, too. And in fact, you know, maybe I shouldn't say this, but I will ...
KING: Go ahead.
WOODWARD: ... because it came to mind: If the judge would permit it, I would go serve some of her jail time, because I think the principle is that important, and it should be underscored. It's not a casual idea that we have confidential sources. It is absolutely vital. And I'll bet there are all kinds of reporters out there, if we could divvy up this four-month jail sentence -- I suspect the judge would not permit that, but if he would, I'll be first in line. It's that important to our business.
And this book and Watergate demonstrated, the daily reporting in any newspaper or on CNN illustrates that. And what are you going to do? Are you going to interview all of the public relations people, all of the spokespeople, and that's it? No one else can talk? Imagine, you know, the varnished pablum that would come out.
KING: We do need our Woodwards.
We're going to take a break and come back and go to your phone calls. Bob Woodward offering to serve part of the time for Judith Miller!
It might even be a hit if G. Gordon Liddy and a couple of Hells Angels were woodward's cell mates.
Keep in mind that on Mr. Wilson's own website he said his wife worked for the CIA. ANd if Rove didn't get his information from classified docs but from a public source no crime was commited.
I really think the whole thing with Rove may amount to something as minor as this: Cooper wants to know why Wilson is even WRITING an op-ed column about an official trip overseas, and Rove explains it was NOT an "official" trip, because Wilson's trip was suggested or approved by Wilson's wife -- who works for the CIA. And, that's it. Big deal. It's not exactly Rove calling up the press and "outing" a CIA agent. For explaining why Wilson wrote and published an Op-Ed piece -- because Wilson's trip here was not an official trip -- Rove has become the subject of Dems' waking wet dreams. And who Miller is protecting is probably someone like Wilson. Just my two cents.
The lady is an employee of the New York Times.
She has no confidential source. She made it up. It's what they do.
Re your post # 42 -- Now THERE's an idea! :)
I wonder if she's being paid hush money?
Great. Give her about 10 years for him.
A "cheap meaningless gesture" from a money grubbing whore.
What morons!
Thanks for posting those links!
hollywood libs will start driving up in SUVs to offer the same ...
Sounds to me like jail is too easy.
I wonder who is doing Judith's gig at the NYT while she is in the slammer? Do you think the NYT would let a bunch of "Citizen Reporters" from FR and elsewhere take over all that NYT space? After all, Woodward wants all the reporters to stay busy doing her jail time, so...someone's got to report the news! :)
Shameless self promoter. He can't do it. He knows he can't do it. So what sacrifice has he made. He only attempts to appeal to dem base. What a putz.
This would guarantee a thriving under-the-table market for bums willing to serve prison time (a step up for them) for payment from well-off (but criminal) clients.
When will the circle-the-wagon press admit Miller's voluntary jailtime is also a cheap meaningless gesture? If Rove is the source for Miller (as everyone including the NYT's is insinuating), she's protecting a source who has long ago signed a waiver to release his name. If it truly IS Rove, then WTF is she protecting? In that case, CHEAP MEANINGLESS GESTURE, Woodward you idiot. Maybe they should all go to jail for no reason, except to pretend it's still the '60's and this crap means something to somebody other than themselves.

Who was going to sit-in for Michael Jackson?
