While I would have prefered the other one from the 5th circuit, I have a good feeling she will be in the Scalia/Thomas mold from reading up on her.
I am not familiar with her, just heard the name. I was hoping it would be Edith Jones. Is Clement a good choice?
Lots of disclaimers, grains of salt, rumor references, FWIW's etc. with that article. Bottom line for me: if the Senate DemRats are "on board", I can't imagine that the result would be better than another Souter. I pray I'm wrong.
Huh?
Specter is pleased. His staff is gearing up tonight.
>>>Ah hell.
Gotta click thorugh: Edith Clement.
Jones would have been a better choice, but a much bigger fight.
Edith B. Clement
Biography
Judge Clement was sworn in as a United States District Judge in 1991 and is presently serving as Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Louisiana. She was a maritime attorney in the New Orleans firm of Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere & Denegre from 1975 - 1991.
Judge Clement received her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1969 and her J.D. from Tulane Law School in 1973, and served as law clerk to the late U.S. District Judge Herbert W. Christenberry. She is a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the Federal Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the Federalist Society, the Tulane Law School's Inn of Court, the Committee on the Administrative Office of the Judicial Conference of the United States, and she serves as the Eastern District of Louisiana Representative on the Fifth Circuit Judicial Council.
She is married and has two children.
But, that's not Ted Olson!
However, I do like it that Clement went to Alabama (my alma mater) for undergrad.
Roll Tide!
If she doesn't scream out Scalia or Thomas, and if dims/Specter are happy, then I've been had by empty campaign promises.
Rhesa Barksdale would also be an excellent choice from the 5th Circuit.
Can't wait to see the Dims use *that* against her:
"This nominee is unqualified because she went to college at a time when there was not even a black man allowed on the football team...."
They probably even have the nerve to get Sheets Byrd to level the charge.
Arrgggh. Coulda been worse. Coulda been Gonzalesouter.
The Dems will still go non-linear. Bush could nominate a stick of wood and they'll howl.
d.o.l.
Criminal Number 18F
An admiralty lawyer and a Federalist.
Good combination..
She looks like an extremist
