Democrats demand legal papers - (Orrin Hatch: "This time they won't get away with it!")
WASHINGTON TIMES.COM ^ | JULY 22, 2005 | CHARLES HURT

Posted on 07/22/2005 12:45:51 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Democrats said yesterday they will demand that the Bush administration hand over internal legal memorandums written by Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. while he was a government lawyer -- something the White House has refused to do in the past.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said he broached the topic during a meeting yesterday with Judge Roberts, who replied that any decision about his writings as deputy solicitor general would be made by the White House.

Republicans on Capitol Hill said the request is not likely to be granted.

Demands for those same documents -- deemed legally privileged by this and previous administrations -- led to the rejection of Miguel Estrada, an earlier Bush nominee to a lower court.

Democrats have used this tactic to stall the nomination of John R. Bolton, Mr. Bush's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations.

Some Republicans said yesterday that the demands may be early signs of a stealth campaign by Democrats to kill the Supreme Court nomination by demanding documents they know they won't get -- a strategy one Republican termed "Estradification."

"This tactic was first fielded against Miguel Estrada, recently perfected with the nomination of John Bolton, and now some are fully primed to Estradify this fine nominee," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, Utah Republican and former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said yesterday he doesn't think "Democrats are going to get away with that this time."

How, besides a filibuster, can the minority stall this nomination?

Cannot the majority end this nonsense?

Will they?

When did you grow a set Orrin?

It has worked in the past, so why would we be surprised that they would not try it again?

It's very simple. The Repubs have the votes and there is no question they can get FIVE responsible dem votes.

The one Repub that tries to "86" Roberts or thwarts his nomination I WILL make sure politically goes down in flames the next election!!!!

Do you get that Collins, Chafee, Snowe, Dewine, Specter, Mcpainintheass?

Their playbook never changes. Demand papers that they know beforehand will not be given and are not entitled to and then stand before the cameras in self-riteous indignation and claimm the administration is hiding something. Thier minions don't know any better so they will get away with it..........

I'd love to do it. I'm a 6'1" 288 lb rugby player but Chucky has said and done so much to hurt this country I might get carried away. And then Chucky will not be around or conscious enough to appreciate the lesson that was taught to him.....with extreme prejudice.

Lawyer-client privelege only applies to accused criminals???

I don't think so. And any media person that supports that position needs to explain why they think the Senate gets an exemption.

I'd bet right now there are 14 patriots meeting and working out a compromise to avoid this threat to the Republic. Maybe they can release every other word? Or maybe release 3 words, skip 2 words, except under extraordinary circumstances, when they can release a whole clause.

It is especially funny to note that Schumer refused to discuss his conversation with Judge Roberts, since he felt it should be considered private.

He wants Judge Roberts to affirm a right to privacy while he at the same time wants the White House to disavow their right to attorney-client priveledge.

I just listen to Sean H. talk for 15 minutes about the unrelenting attack the Dimwits plan to unleash on Roberts. I just don't see it happening that way. Dimwit ammo of Abortion, Interstate Commerce, private legal papers in Bush 1's administration, right wing extremist, demanding legal opinions at hearings on any and all issues isn't going to work.

The American people are tired of all the crapola. I'm looking forward to the role Fred Thompson will be playing in hearings. If Fred is sitting their able to talk to Roberts when some of these line of questions are thrown at Roberts I think the Dimwits are going to fold and fold quickly.

The WH needs to follow Willard Clinton's example and tell these 'RATS to "kiss it." It's that simple. Personally, I don't think the Commies in the Senate have the security clearance required to see these "memos." AND! It's none of their business. The less Communists know, the less damage they can do to America.

Come on now, Mr. Schumer is a typical N.Y. liberal Jewish Democrat that just happens to see things differently then you or I.
That is understandable if you take into account his backround. He is the type of turd that I'd have kicked his butt in school and picked him last for any and everything. I'd have made him a bugger depository.
See, probably some other bully did this to him and he hates himself.

This article said that the demand for internal memos led to the rejection of Miguel Estrada...

I thought that Estrada asked to have his name removed, because he wasn't going to wait for the dems to change their minds...

I know it is a tiny point, but I am really hoping that Roberts will get through, and THEN Bush can re-nominate Estrada, except this time for the Supreme Court, and they won't be able to use the same reason, if they let Robert through.

I worry that he has spent too much time schmoozing liberals on the Beltway cocktail circuit ... and might try to play the role of an affable "uniter."

It will be good for him to see who his enemies are and what they are like.

Yes, I think his socialist ego is really battered, since the Clinton mafia came in and took over New York -- a loser like Hitlery Rotten Clinton taking the camera away from Comrade Chuckie! Like all of the RADICAL leftists, he makes an absolute ass out of himself (the Dem mascot) every time he opens his socialist, anti-American mouth. He will continue this habit into the confirmation hearing where he will grandstand and obstruct as much as he and his ilk can....

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, Utah Republican and former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said yesterday he doesn't think "Democrats are going to get away with that this time."

The reason being that the Dems will confirm this one, and Hatch knows it. He would never say that if the Dems were serious. He'd say, "Yes, Sir. Right away, Sir. Here are all the legal papers, Sir. Would you like us to hang and quarter our judicial nominee for you, Sirs? "

I don't know about you but many of us have had our beliefs molded by our religion. Mr. Schumer is a liberal and he is Jewish. While being highly educated as a whole, Jews are most often liberal and vote democrat.
I'm not making anything up here and I am not being antiJewish. Just stating facts as I see them.

I went to a school named Grant High in North Hollywood Ca. It was about 90 percent Jewish.
We weren't known for our tough football team nor our headbanging gangs. It was with emphisis on education. Lots of book nerds.
