Prosecutor In CIA Leak Case Casting A Wide Net (My Title: CIA Questioned in "Leak" Case)
Washington Post ^ | Wednesday, July 27, 2005 | Walter Pincus and Jim VandeHei

Posted on 07/26/2005 9:47:23 PM PDT by SolidSupplySide

The special prosecutor in the CIA leak probe has interviewed a wider range of administration officials than was previously known, part of an effort to determine whether anyone broke laws during a White House effort two years ago to discredit allegations that President Bush used faulty intelligence to justify the Iraq war, according to several officials familiar with the case.

Prosecutors have questioned former CIA director George J. Tenet and deputy director John E. McLaughlin, former CIA spokesman Bill Harlow, State Department officials, and even a stranger who approached columnist Robert D. Novak on the street.

ONe must try really hard to try and make this Rove's fault.
There is a lot of "forgetting" required.

That's easy. The WaPo, NY Times et al have been doing it every day on this story!

Ah yes, good ol' Vinnie. A flash from the past. Not enough light can be shined on him IMO.
Good compilation. Lots more out in the 'Net covering him.

Did I just hear on the news correctly ... that the Dems now think Bolton was involved with the leak of Plame's name ... And that Joe Biden sent a letter to Condie asking whether or not Bolton has appeared before the Grand Jury???

Bolton testified. Noted a week or so ago.

They probably interviewed everyone who worked on WMDs in State and CIA. No big deal.

I just heard on FOX from some political pundit that some article today, somewhere, indicates Novak reiterated that the info did come from inside the CIA? Anyone with knowledge of this article, today.

Well, Wilson himself says Novak told him he obtained the information from the CIA in the excerpt from his book below. [How Wilson came to blame Rove for the leak of info I am not sure unless maybe he thinks Rove is CIA or thought no one would compare his claims to past statements and catch him in the lie.]

JULY 10, 2003 : (THE DATE JOE WILSON CLAIMS HE AND NOVAK SPOKE ABOUT JOE WILSON'S "FRIEND'S" ALLEGED ENCOUNTER WITH NOVAK ON JULY 8) Novak called the next morning [July 9], but I was out, and then so was he. We did not connect until the following day, July 10. He listened quietly as I repeated to him my friend’s account of their conversation. I told him I couldn’t imagine what had possessed him to blurt out to a complete stranger what he had thought he knew about my wife. Novak apologized, and then asked if I would confirm what he had heard from a CIA source: that my wife worked at the Agency. I told him that I didn’t answer questions about my wife. I told him that my story was not about my wife or even about me; it was about sixteen words in the State of the Union address.
I then read to him [* My note- why? Ego?] three sentences from a 1990 news story about the evacuation of Baghdad: “The chief American diplomat, Joe Wilson, shepherds his flock of some 800 known Americans like a village priest. At 4:30 Sunday morning, he was helping 55 wives and children of U.S. diplomats from Kuwait load themselves and their few remaining possessions on transport for the long haul on the desert to Jordan. He shows the stuff of heroism.” The reporters who had written this, I pointed out, were Robert Novak and Rowland Evans.
I suggested to Novak that he might want to check his files before writing about me. I also offered to send him all the articles I had written in the past year on policy toward Iraq so that he could educate himself on the positions I had taken. He would learn, if he took the time, that I was hardly antiwar, just anti–dumb war. Before I hung up, Novak apologized again for having spoken about Valerie to a complete stranger. ----------- "A Strange Encounter with Robert Novak ," from Chapter 17 - The Politics of Truth , by Joseph Wilson, http://www.politicsoftruth.com/excerpt.html

Yes, but on the very next page Wilson claims that Novack retracted the statement that his source was in the CIA.... not that I would believe anything out of Wilson at this point, but Novack's column did not reference anyone in the CIA as his source for Valerie Plame's name....

So Walter Pincus is using the Post to prop up Wilson.

So far, we have Walter Pincus married to someone who worked for and was friends with the Clitnons. Matt Cooper's wife Mandy Grunwald who works for and is friends with the Clintons. David Gregory's wife who worked for and who was friends with the Clintons.

NO MEDIA BIAS! /sarcasm!

That friend story is funny. Novak had written that he spoke to someone in the "agency" but they never indicated she was undercover. It's well known that he meant the CIA and I would like for him to clarify it though and has he spoken to this agent before speaking to Rove?

Something else I found that was interesting about Cannistraro:

He organized an interview with Osama bin Laden for ABC News in 1998.

That's interesting given that Ollie North came out with a rant way back in 2001 about people in journalism who knew of Bin Laden from past interviews refusing to assist the government in any way in the hunt for bin Laden.

A coinkidink?

The group that promoted the Doug Thompson Cap Hill Blue story sourced to the mysterious Terrance J Wilkinson... was Truthout.org. They were the folks who effectively sent the story international by forewarding the Cap Hill Blue tale to Japan Today, where it was later picked up without attribution by the ABC networks, CNN and all. Truthout.org had an LA-area contact number when I did the whois search on them.

As a point of trivia, their web site was registered on Sept 10, 2001, by someone calling itself "Marc Ash" one day before the 9/11 attacks. I noted he couldn't spell Los Angeles properly as whoever registered the site spelled it "Las Angelos." A foreigner? Whoever registered it also is associated with a domain called "artfix.com" which was registered on Thu, Nov 06, 1997.

Another guy associated with Truthout is William Rivers Pitt, their "managing editor;" he also registered on Cap Hill Blue's website that night the story went international, what was it, July 9, 2003?

Pitt's associated with Antiwar.com, a site also associated with the rantings of Justin Raimondo and a guy named Ismail Royer. Ismail got caught up in a terrorism probe of the Paintball Cell/VA Jihad group, which was led by a guy named Timimi who was the sone of Iraqi immigrants. As it happens, Ismail was an officer in the well-known Muslim activist group called CAIR.

Pitt also coauthored a book with former UNSCOM weapons inspector Scott Ritter of Buger King / Iraqi al Khafaji bribery fame. The book was called "War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn't Want You to Know." Pitt's out of the Boston area, supposedly a teacher. Being a Boston guy I wouldn't be too suprised if he is associated with John Kerry.

Anyway, Pitt claims to have gotten an update to post on his website from none other than Ray McGovern of VIPS fame on September 29, 2003. Ray & Pitt were pushing the "Rove was fired from Bush Sr.'s 1992 campaign" meme. [In fact, Rove was into state politics at the time and never worked on Bush Sr's 1992 campaign.] Ray and Pitt were upset about Rumsfeld's "Office of Special Plans" and Ahmed Chalabi cutting the CIA out of the loop.

Ray & Pitt brought up John DiIulio, a Dem domestic policy advisor to the White House who had made a rant against Rove. (Involved with the faith-based initiatives office.)

DiIulio is an interesting figure- he was involved in that fracas at the White House in 2001 before the 9/11 attacks where the Secret Service threw Congressman Bonior's aid- incidentally, he was FL terrorist suspect Sami al-Arian's kid- out of the White House complex.

As the muslim activist groups raised Hades about that incident, Diulio apparently offered to get a job for a Muslim in the White House. He "retired" shortly after he made the offer to placate the mobs that way.

Note that Bonior was one of the Baghdad Trio of congresscritters who traveled to Baghdad before the war.

Now why would DiIulio offer some radical Muslims associated with Sami al Arian access to the White House complex via a job with the office of faith based initiatives just months before 9/11- did they suggest that as a way to placate them?

According to a Freeper called Helix, Truthout is funded by (or affiliated with) a group called SEE (Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs)

To see the BBB report on SEE (Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs) AKA- Afghan Women's Mission, American-Soviet Film Initiative-click here: http://www.give.org/reports/care2_dyn.asp?800

Some info on a few of SEE's board members:
Steven Sugarman
1. California State University grad -MA in research Psychology. (There is another Steven Sugarman in New Mexico who is known for his litigation on behalf of the eco-nuts. I haven't found any documentation linking the two): http://www.thehabitattrust.org/about.html (info halfway down page)

2. Max Gail

Vincent Cannistraro... security advisor to the Vatican

The Iraqi ambassador to the Holy See, Zahawi, traveled to Niger in February 1999.

Father Jean-Marie Benjamin, French guy working at the Vatican and known for his sanctions-busting air flights of celebrities and supplies to Iraq. Associated with the Iraqi ambassador to the Holy See -the same Iraqi who made repeated rants in the press about nuclear WMD- and the priest is also associated with oil-for-food bribe-man, Iraqi official Tariq Aziz. Benjamin's known to hang around with the European leftist groups who have been funding the Iraq insurgency. Also the guy who claimed to have foreknowledge of 911 that was allegedly ignored by Berlusconi's government in Italy. He claims he overheard the info at a wedding in Todi, Italy and said [after the fact, of course- after 9/11 ] that he told Italian officials.

Benjamin also was on the receiving end of quite a sum of Oil for Food vouchers. He, like UNSCOM inspector Scott Ritter, made documentaries in Iraq and wrote books on it.

Benjamin's also associated with the communist Iraqi Patriotic Alliance group.

2003 summer : (ASSISI, ITALY : ANTI-IMPERIALIST CAMP : "IRAQI PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE" LEADER ABDUL JABBAR KUBAISY, FRANCO CARDINI, AND FATHER JEAN-MARIE BENJAMIN ARE AMONG THE ATTENDEES TAKING PART IN THE CAMP)  Mr. Kalemji took part last summer in the "Anti-Imperialist Camp," a weeklong gathering of communists and other leftists including revolutionaries from Iraq, the Philippines, Nepal, the Palestinian territories and Venezuela. The camp was held in the Umbrian hill town of Assisi, home of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), patron saint of animals and the environment and founder of the Franciscan Order of monks.
Also present were radical intellectuals such as Franco Cardini, a leading expert on medieval history who says that recent videos of Osama bin Laden are fakes distributed by the CIA to foster anti-Islamic sentiment.
Another participant was the Rev. Jean-Marie Benjamin, a French Roman Catholic priest who in February 2003 organized a visit to the Vatican by then Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz. --- "Al Qaeda seeking funds in Italy," By John Phillips, THE WASHINGTON TIMES, June 12, 2004, http://washingtontimes.com/world/20040612-113949-4683r.htm

Benjamin and others are providing free legal advice to Tariq Aziz.

Benjamin was also a former UNICEF executive.

Novak's column didn't say his source was someone from the White House, yet the press ran with it as if he had said so, and still does to this day.
