More Dieters Ditch Carb Counts (AP)

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- More dieters are ditching carb counts and biting into baguettes with gusto these days. ...

This week's bankruptcy filing by the late Dr. Robert C. Atkins' old company provide fresh evidence of the low-carb diet's demise, a downward spiral that began early last year. But no single new diet has filled the void.

Observers say the only sure thing -- given the boom-and-bust nature of weight-loss trends -- is that something will pop up eventually.

''There isn't one single strong contender,'' said Anne M. Russell, editor-in-chief of Shape magazine. ''If you look at what the single largest trend is, it's weight gain.''

Chapter 11 filings by Atkins Nutritionals Inc. on Monday came about a year and a half after books like ''The Atkins Essentials'' rode the best seller charts, bread makers were back on their heels and Burger King introduced a Whopper without a bun.

But Atkins has been in decline since February 2004, said Harry Balzer, a food industry analyst at market researcher NPD Group. Balzer claims Atkins was one of those demanding diets that simply ran its course, going from fad to fade like so many others before it, including the Scarsdale and the cabbage soup diets.

How far and how fast did Atkins fall? By September 2004, surplus low-carb products were being shipped to food banks in Appalachia....

Ruth Kava, director of nutrition for the American Council on Science and Health, figures it might be something like a high-protein diet.

''Somebody will come up with something new,'' she said. ''There's a lot of creativity out there in Diet World."

It's comments like this that make arguing with the Atkins crowd such a joy.

C'mon, you have to admit it was funny! The point is that any two words can be searched for; the number of hits proves nothing. Searching for "candle" and "truck" returns 999,000 hits.

Yeah, but what does that prove? Some dancing gay men are fat, you know.

Someone said on another thread that it wasn't the diet itself that caused the bankruptcy. It was the introduction of the diet foods from Atkins and apparently no one wanted to buy them.

calories burned > calories consumed = weight loss. Everything else is just fluff.

Not true. There's good science behind the diet. And the diet works when adhered to. That's the hard part.

Sorry summer, I have read a lot of articles about the dangers of a low carb diet and most of them were by people trying to protect an industry that was being hurt by the low car craze. I have read a lot about low carb and cholestrol and proteins and it is not bad for the body. NO CARBS are but not low carbs.

The diet has nothing to do with the failure of the Adkins company.

I resent the notion that I'm uninformed about Atkins. I have, in fact, read Atkins and South Beach cover to cover. The science is valid, I agree, but it's a short-term solution. The problem with America's diet craze is that people think that they can get thin by eating bacon, seafood and salad. This is faulty and wrong.

Additionally, I've subscribed to Atkins and South Beach. I made significant gains in weight loss, but after while you lose some things that carbohydrates give you.

I've never been an "enriched" anything advocate. I eat whole grains and tons of vegetables. I have a healthy appetite for red meat *gasps from the crowd* and fish. I read and study every new avenue for weight loss available. Four years in college, many hours of sweat and tears, and I am a healthy, albeit heavy, man. I run a 10 minute mile. I bench press 215.

All I'm saying is that the American society, in general, is a society of extremes, and it is automatically assumed that a new "diet" is going to be the magic pill that we've all been waiting for. I look to our ancestors to see how they lived, and they were forced to actually go outside and move around. Sendentary lifestyle is what keeps us fat. All I'm saying is put down the pork rinds and bacon, get your tubby ass off the couch (I can say this, I weigh in at 275) and go outside. It doesn't cost a dime to walk a mile down the street. Mentality must change to downsize our waistlines!

Thank goodness for Splenda though. He is able to eat frozen snacks that are made with Splenda without exceeding the number of carbs he's allowed.

Check out lowcarbfriends.com for some really good recipes.

Statistically speaking, Atkin's dieters are more likely to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles and they prefer to buy their dieting food at WalMart...

I believe the diet works, I just don't believe one necessarily needs to follow some convoluted diet to lose weight.

but it always amazed me how long the popularity of his diet lasted. It was so damaging to the body.

Yeah, it "damaged" 130+ pounds of fat off of mine.

Re your post #143 and my post #48 - No, my point was there are A LOT Of articles written by health professionals detailing the dangers of Atkins' Plan. Therefore, there's no need for me to rehash all that's already been written. THAT was my point.

Some posters on this thread are pretending I am the first person in the universe who's concluded Atkins is NOT ideal.

Otherwise - shalom! :)

Decaf coffee! WTF! Decaf is for schoolgirls.

I like the Venti Iced Coffee from Starbucks (with a redeye). My wife tried a sip once and made such a face. I still laugh thinking about it.

Or chocolate!

Chocolate is allowed on Atkins. Remember chocolate comes from a bean therefore it's a vegetable. ;)

It should be "moderate carbs" not "low carbs." Everything in moderation, the problem is the typical diet is extremely high in carbs. Just get carb intake down to a moderate level, but many took it as eliminating carbs altogether, which is ridiculous.

No matter what one thinks of a low-carb diet, eliminating as much refined sugars, corn starch, and corn syrup out of your diet as you can will do anyone a world of good.
