NCAA deems Utah's "Utes" nickname to be "hostile or abusive"

Finding the University of Utah's ''Utes'' nickname, along with the nicknames of 17 other colleges, to be ''hostile or abusive,'' the NCAA today banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday, but by preventing those teams from participating in its playoffs, it effectively is forcing the names to be abandoned nationwide.

The postseason ban begins Feb. 1, 2006. Said Harrison, the University of Hanford's president: ''As a national association, we believe that mascots, nicknames or images deemed hostile or abusive in terms of race, ethnicity or national origin should not be visible at the championship events that we control.''

In addition to the University of Utah, the list includes:

--Alcorn State University (Braves)
--Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
--Catawba College (Indians)
--Florida State University (Seminoles)
--Midwestern State University (Indians)
--University of Utah (Utes)
--Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians)
--Carthage College (Redmen)
--Bradley University (Braves)
--Arkansas State University (Indians)
--Chowan College (Braves)
--University of Illinois-Champaign (Illini)
--University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians)
--McMurry University (Indians)
--Mississippi College (Choctaws)
--Newberry College (Indians)
--University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
--Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)

In November of 2004, the NCAA asked 33 schools were asked to submit self evaluations to the NCAA National Office to determine the extent, if any, of the use of Native American imagery or references on their campuses. Specific aspects of the self evaluations centered on three NCAA Constitution principles that reference cultural diversity and gender equity; the principle of sportsmanship and ethical conduct; and the principle of nondiscrimination.

''The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs,'' said NCAA President Myles Brand.

''Several institutions have made changes that adhere to the core values of the NCAA Constitution pertaining to cultural diversity, ethical sportsmanship and nondiscrimination,'' Brand said. ''We applaud that, and we will continue to monitor these institutions and others. All institutions are encouraged to promote these core values and take proactive steps at every NCAA event through institutional event management to enhance the integrity of intercollegiate athletics related to these issues.''

Schools will have an opportunity to appeal, the NCAA said.

Let me get this straight. They're saying that Illinois teams can't call themselves the Illini? On the news this was presented as though they wouldn't let Chief Illinewek perform in a bowl game, or something. Are they really going with an all out Inquistition here ?

They'll have to have inoffensive, non-sexist, non-aggressive names like "Utah Mungbeans" and Central Michigan University "Meadowgrass".

I'm not a sports fan, so I have no dog in this fight, but politican correctness is actually evil.

Remember a team the "Fighting Whities" a while ago?

NCAA Constitution pertaining to cultural diversity, ethical sportsmanship and nondiscrimination

Why are they concerning themselves with anything besides fair play on the playing field? Sounds like somebody needs some reining in!

Sports teams are concerned with winning games, period. The racial part is inherently taken care of. You want guys who are the strongest and fastest, not a particular race.

Seriously, I don't care so much about the Chief, but I think the nickname is ultra-cool and needs to stay.

On the local news tonight, the Ute Indian big chief was saying that the decision is assinine in the case of Utah. The Utes have always consulted their tribe on such matters. They're happy to have the state and a state university named after them. I'd love to see the Ute tribe sue the NCAA over this.

Yep and rolling my eyes. I think the nickname The Running Utes bit the dust a few years ago. The most ironic thing is that the Native Americans around here don't really care about the nickname(s). Political Correctness run amok. (Of course, I don't really care because I went to BYU. LOL.)

As a decendent of Pioneers, I'm offended by the use of the word as a mascot of various HS.

I'm also offended that there is a national/local political party called the Democrats when they are not.

I'm also offended that the NYT calls itself the "NP of record". It's neither a NP nor anything to do with being a record. The RIAA should invesstigate immediately.

That is surprising. Probably on their list of things to do. A couple of more suggestions for the U:

1. Ask Jordan High School if the U of U can use their mascot, "The Beetdiggers".

2. Follow Apple's example. Apple was developing a later version of it's operating system and code named it "Sagan". Carl Sagan objected to it so they renamed it "Butt-headed Astronomer". So the U could name themselves: "NCAA Morons" or "NCAA Pantloads". Something to that effect.

Brand strikes again. His PC BS took IU athletics and academics down a few notches, and now is delivering the results for NCAA.

Perhaps the U should step up to the times.

Aw hell, the Running Redskins portrayed just too much support of the peaceful Ute's accumen and ability of past. We need to accept the local natives. "They" being the aclu lawyers.

I don't understand... are our native American brothers and sisters offended by our acclaiming them as fighters, warriors, and winners???

Fine. Change the name. Big deal. Just next time, name the team after somebody that isn't afraid of being a symbol of success and winning attitude. In the meantime, maybe there's an aclu-friendly queer group that would like to name themselves the native bumhuggers or some such.

I said this was going to happen last year and everyone didn't believe me. More PC is to come - this is still the beginning of the end. The head of the NCAA is the former president of Indiana University who along with a cabal of ultra-liberal professors, set up Bob Knight and forced him to be fired. The Knight firing was all a crock, using the weasel son of one of the biggest liberal critics of Knight to provoke Knight into verbally rebuking him. This cabal of professors hated all men's college sports and the conservatism of Knight constantly rankled them. Especially when Knight insisted on a military honor guard to present the American flag before each game. Now they are out to take down all of men's college sports.

Seriously, I don't care so much about the Chief,...

Well, I do. Ever notice the mascot for Hawaii? He's the "warrior" and is dressed in native Hawaiian garb, and prances and mugs in the most outrageous fashion. He is evidently exempt from any consideration of offensiveness. The reason is obvious. They are "really" Hawaiians - really natives - and they are authentic. I find this whole setup outrageously offensive. Is the U of H "warrior" going to be the only "native mascot" allowed ? ... on the basis of racialism ?
