From friends at ABC; Peter Jennings is near death. This is unconfirmed, but from usually reliable sources.

The ABC anchor, who was born in Canada but became a US citizen, announced a few months ago that he was suffering from lung cancer. He has not made a televised appearance since.

My condolences to you and your family on the loss of your father. Last year my mother at age 62 was taken by cholangiocarcinoma exactly a month after diagnosis. It is still a shock but I take comfort in the time we had to say goodbye without a prolonged period of suffering. May God surround you and your family at this time with His love and with warm memories of your father.

It is sort of incredible that, in such a short time, all 3 of the major network anchors are now gone.

Heavy smoker. Lung cancer. Smoking kills.

In my experience, hypocrisy usually starts at graveside along with pathologically polite amnesia.

Yep.

I like Gibson quite a lot actually. He did a nice job tonight.

On 9/11, Jennings teared up some, but mostly kept it cool and collected, sifting through all the data masterfully.

Jennings told young reporters to do what he did and become a foreign correspondent. That probably is one of the best ways to keep from staying in local news never getting noticed by the network bigshots, but how one becomes a foreign correspondent is still up in the air in my mind. Everything you learn in J-school is geared toward how to report for local news.

It is amazing to think all three network anchors are gone from the air and either replaced or in the process of being replaced.

I think I am about the only person in college who actually still watches network news (will sometimes catch Brit on FNC or PBS' NewsHour instead of the regular network program though).

May he rest in peace, and May God bless and comfort his family and friends. Too bad so many here have to make the smoking remarks.

My prayers go to the Jennings family in this time of grief.

I do remember when Mr. Jennings began as a nightly reporter. I always felt that he had a good voice and professional demeanor, unlike some of the current informal journalists who are annoying in their delivery.

Empathy for those who hurt is a humane emotion.

I, too, am terribly sorry for the pain being felt by those left behind.
