I wouldn't give them that much information to open and account let alone to close it.

This is what kills me...I want to CLOSE it...not Open a new one! I can understand showing private information for opening...but what they want is totally unreasonable...and I wanted everyone else to see this before you open up an account....I'm just sorry they have my name and address now!

"The catch here is that she had never used PayPal and didn't even know what they were."

A business partner of mine had a commercial checking account wiped out, to the tune of over $15,000.00, and the first sign of something peculiar was a PayPal account opened under his name. It appears that the PayPal account was only used to verify funds. The actual fraud was committed the old fashioned way, with counterfeit checks, which were cashed all across the country within days of one another.

My advice for people who have had funds frozen unnecessarily by Paypal is just hold on...you might get a settlement payment like I did.

Dear "Bearwash",

This email is to update you on the status of your claim for monetary relief from the In Re PayPal Litigation settlement fund, a class action lawsuit against PayPal that was settled in November 2004. No further action is required; settlement payments will be deposited automatically into your PayPal account.

The Claims Administrator is planning to make payments to your PayPal account as follows. If you filled out a Statutory Fund Claim Form, then the settlement payment will be automatically deposited into your PayPal by July 31, 2005. If you filled out a Short Form Claim Form, then the settlement payment will be automatically deposited into your PayPal account by August 31, 2005. If you filled out a Long Form Claim Form, those settlement payments will be processed as soon as they are approved by the Court. The Claims Administrator expects to have the settlement by September 30, 2005.

Fawn, they were phishing. That was not a legitimate communication from Paypal. NOT.

I've been getting scam emails for the last two weeks asking me to update my PayPal information. They look authentic, but when you go to the data input page they ask for a SS#, a dead give-away that it's a scam.

You're being scammed.

Open the email.

Click on file, properties.

Click on the Details tab.

Copy the IP Address of the person who sent you the message onto your clipboard.

Open another browser window and go to http://psacake.com/web/eg.asp

Enter the IP address and see where the email originated. My guess is it didn't come from PayPal.

I know...I get one a week. That's why when they officially notified me of the hack....I looked up their telephone number last year and have been going back and forth with them for over a year. I am not stupid to phishing or spam emails.
