Don't you think this is unreasonable to cancel an account??? It's not even a toll free number (which they make you research for)because I was charged for it when I pleaded with them to close my account because it was jeopardized (hacked).

Just like AOL; the only way to break away from them is to close your bank accout if they have access, and get your CC company to reissue your cards with a new number.

Once companies like this get their tentacles into your money, it is impossible to get them to sever the relationship from their end.

Never reply to emails. Communicate directly to Paypal by logging into your account. You were being scammed.

Did you initiate this process in response to an email?

You're being scammed. Nigerian style.

Want to be they got forced into it by some nut cancelling somebody else's Paypal account?

Now they have to make darn sure that the requestor is the owner of the account.

I understand why they're doing it, even if I don't like it much.

be careful...PAypal has a phone number you can call...

A few months ago I got a realistic looking e-mail from them asking me to update my credit card info...images, border colors, etc...I called and they asked me to forward the e-mail (it was an obvious scam)...

I will say this; the guy on the phone did start to ask me all kinds of questions and I finally cut him off and said, "look, this is the situation"..

Not same as your problem but there is a phone number to call.

I had to search thru google to get a hold of paypal. I waited on hold for about 20 minutes and then when they answered they asked how I got their number. I would also cancel the credit card.

I know stories about guys trying to cancel AOL and had the same thing happen. I think they got sued because of it.

I am not happy with PAY PAL either. I finally set it up, but then I find, not many places have it, so... on top of that, Customer Support is not the best either.

Good Luck

Scams don't usually already have your CC number, as this e-mail did. PayPal WILL e-mail you if you contact them, so it's not just scammers that e-mail.

"Don't you think this is unreasonable to cancel an account???"

PayPal has a history of questionable practices. From a personal perspective, my mother had funds in her her bank account frozen by PayPal and it took her 3 months to get it cleared. The catch here is that she had never used PayPal and didn't even know what they were.

Last week I received a similar email, but they wanted me to login to "paypal", but it wasn't the paypal doman it was an IP address...and give them similar information. Be careful before proceeding. Call them, and forward the email to spoof@paypal.com for good measure.

I wouldn't give them that much information to open and account let alone to close it.

This has been going on over a year now between me and them. I called them directly(NOT a toll free number)..they gave me the runa round on the phone...stating to send them all this private iformation...... and I had also immediately canceled my credit card... when I try to sign into my account...I get the following message(which prompted my research to call them and follow up on my account via emails--so I can't sign in to cancel my acocunt!!) It's unbelievable.....

"This account has been permanently locked with a $0.00 USD balance. All information associated with this account has been blocked from the PayPal system and cannot be registered with another account."

Thanks for the info. I've never used it, and won't. Suggest you send this to your Congressman and/or State representative with a copy to paypal exec. Also Federal Trade Commission which has online site.

I got a similar email a few weeks ago.

I sent a copy to the spoof@paypal.com and asked them to let me know whether that was actually from Paypal.

I never got a response, so I assume it was a scam email.

I haven't logged into my Paypal account in ages.

Could everyone on FR send $10 to my Paypal account so I can log in and see if it is working?
