Gallup: Bush Approval Rating Continues to Drop (40% Approval 29% Repubs polled)

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll reflects further erosion in President George W. Bush's job approval rating, continuing the slow but steady decline evident throughout the year so far. The poll -- conducted Aug. 22-25 -- puts Bush's job approval rating at 40% and his disapproval rating at 56%. Both are the most negative ratings of the Bush administration. Bush's previous low point in approval was 44% (July 25-28, 2005) and his previous high point in disapproval was 53% (June 24-26, 2005).

Bush's average approval rating for the last three Gallup Polls -- all conducted in August -- is 43%. The rolling average has been steadily declining throughout the year. Bush's average approval ratings for January, February, and March of this year were in the 50% to 52% range, but they then began declining slowly in subsequent months. Bush's average approval rating in May was 48%, declining to 46% in June, rising slightly in July, and then declining again to the current three-poll average of 43%.

The following chart shows the rolling average for Bush's job approval rating this year, with each average consisting of three poll measurements.

The current poll finds a drop in support for Bush among independents, and a small drop in support among Republicans to the lowest level of his administration.

In two July polls in which Bush averaged an overall 49% approval rating, an average of 46% of independents approved. In the subsequent three polls (July 25-28, Aug. 5-7, and Aug. 8-11), Bush's overall approval average dropped to 45%, and his average support among independents fell to 37%. Now, in the current poll, 32% of independents approve. (An average of 41% of independents have approved across all 2005 polls to date, excluding the most recent poll.)

Not very good, but I hope it gets better in the fall. Having all this negative publicity pounding 24/7 doesn't help.

The reason, Pres. Bush's polls are low is because, he is not conservative enough, to please his base. The Dems. are misreading what the majority want, again.....

Curious why you didn't post the 35-29-34 split on respondents. Real easy to made the numbers look bad when you only poll 29% Republicans.

You are sounding just like the Democrats did last year when they were perpetually whining about how the polls were undersampling Democrats. Gallup even responded to that by saying that for as long as they've been polling the percentage of people who claim to be of a party rises and falls with the popularity of the party. The fact of the matter is that this is true.

Jeff you are damned right on this.

The media is in full anti Bush mode. (Sods)

I am so tired of their petty, stupid little games. The MSM are nothing but a bunch of girly men who need to be hosed down.

Honesty :

The "media" polls well below politicians

the "politicians" poll well below "used car salesmen"

Gallup is a trollop.

With no reality check, like an election, in the future, they call poll everyone...including felons, illegal aliens, and drugged up dropouts.

Then they fiddle with the results till they have their delusion confirmed.

I don't believe a bit of this poll.

Perhaps the pollsters are hoping that when he reaches very low poll numbers he'll change all of his administrations policies,

We have to be realistic.

The media in cahoots with the pollsters are running a cornered RAT vicious campaign to stem the hemorrhage of their power.

And they may well win back power in the 2006 elections.

They have already been successful in their backdoor campaign to disaffect many ultra conservatives. Just look at the slant of all the articles that Crackingham posts here on FreeRepublic to keep our ultra conservatives angry and stirred up and disaffected. Score one for the dedicated Marxists.

That they are doing this bid for power with the lives of our soldiers in harm's way and giving aid and comfort to the enemy in the process is dispicable beyond measure.

God place them in the lowest reaches of Hell where all traitors go.

Meanwhile, we must face squarely that America is opposed not just by Islamofascists overseas but by fifth column corrupt media and leftists here at home. And this is the time for solidarity and hard work, not for division in our ranks.

We havent been attacked. I will grant him that. But nor were we attacked on the homeland for almost 8 years prior to that either. THAT does not make me feel safe.

My problem with Bush is that he doesnt convey an attitude of confidence. If he were my CEO, I wouldn't feel as thought I knew where the company was going. He may have a plan, but it isnt clear to me what it is.

I understand that I should not be privy to military secrets. I understand that there is not going to be an unconditional surrender of the flag as there has been.

However, grinding guerralla actions are not winnable. They never have been, and they never will be. You can bring down a mightier power with rocks and sticks--if you can field enough rock and stick tossers.

We are NOT going level towns. AND We are not going to wins the hearts and minds of these people. They dont understand freedom, and quite frankly they dont seem to mind.

Bush is not doing much to secure my borders. He speaks in phrases that remind me of former employers who could spout the company "mission statement" but who had no idea of it meant to do it. They felt if they said it enough that people would start to believe it. That works if the actions support the statements. However, just saying it doesnt make it so.

Don't misunderstand me. I think we NEED to stay the course. I think we NEED to defeat the insurgents/terrorists on their own turf. But I also think we need to be honest about where these guys are coming from and what we will need to do to finally defeat them.

I cannot imagine anyone else doing any better. Certainly, we havent been given many choices--and the ones seemingly coming to bat in '08 seem pretty weak.

On a personal level, I support the concept of the war, I certinaly have demonstrated support for the troops that I know who have been over there...but I do not have a lot of confidence in the leadership running the country right now. They continue to play polarizing politics and they are not Leading.

Leadership means having a vision, communicating the vision, providing your team with the tools to execute the plans for your vision, and then getting out their way to make it happen. I think he may have a vision--and I think I am bright enough to figure it out--but I am not confident that he has stood up and done a good job communicating the vision in a meaningful way.

Quite frankly, every time I see him near a microphone, I cringe.

""I'd like to see the whole PR/communications team at the White House fired. They are always blind sided by this stuff.""

It is clear to me the problem with communication isnt the WH staff or PR, it is the President himself. He is unwilling or unable (probably some of both) to communicate with the american people.

""I wonder what the approval rating is Congress and the MSM?""

Congress is controlled by the GOP, I am not sure why yuo'd root for a low congressional appoval rating.

People better get ready for a DEM controlled congress in Jan 2007.

Maybe the President will then actually be forced to veto something

""If the Bush decides to do nothing (and the gas prices stay high), Bush and the GOP will suffer the same fate as Hoover.""

I think that is a bit overstated...high gas price are not the same as 25% unemployment

"'Bush pushed through that crappy CAFTA Treaty, which I think is the biggest mistake of his administration.""

Bush's approval rating is not at all being impacted by CAFTA...I was wondering how soon it would be before the Buchanan brigade gave their pet reason as to why Bush is losing popularity

This is rubbish, utter rubbish..polls have shown that the base is with Bush 90%.

If the base were not with Bush, a poll slanted to 29% GOP wouldnt give Bush artifically low numbers, it would give him artifically high numbers.

At one time he could, right after 9/11. Actually, I've noticed he's failed to deliver on every major speech/press conference beginning with the State of the Union of 2004. The debates were a fiasco. He doesn't even get the usual 5-10 % bump from speeches. Bad news.

I actually think he communicates less than his father did.

I understand the desire to be the anti-Clinton and not be a self promoter, but his lack of communication cannot be blamed, as some here do, on the WH staff.
