Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I'm here. Thanks Nauti.

Way to much sniping going on. Do we need to call the Kitties to put things in order, or can we all just act like adults and maintain focus on hard news and commentary?

The political stuff should be taken to any number of other threads that are up. IMO

You need to donate money. The logistics of millions of people sending 'things' is only going to contribute to more problems.

I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

yet we could not build a retainer system to prevent New Orleans from being flooded.

Even if the money were available, no one had developed or even proposed a levee system big enough to prevent this.

My parents have a condo in Gulf Shores and from what they've heard, there was storm surge flooding, but not the wind damage. I wish I had more info.

CNN has been showing some helio rooftop rescues...

So glad to hear it. Not watching TV; have my ear to the radio stations.

Are ANY of the pumps working? I heard this morning that 2 were down. I don't know how many total there are. I'm just wondering when they're estimating they can drain the bowl.

Horrible stuff. I was very afraid of this levee thing happening, and I'm sorry to hear that it did.

There's no place for the water to drain, since NO is the lowest point. This is going to take a long time to clean up, and no mistake about it.

If anyone has some information on donating food, clothing etc. to local people or organizations in the Hurricane impact area, please post.

Probably the best bet for immediate aid is to send money (to whomever), so that they can get exactly what they need ASAP. Clothing will definitely be needed later, but the folks on the ground can use money right now.

Excellent. WWL radio had some very good coverage; but, I am way out of range and they do not stream on line

FYI The MS number for road closures is not a recording...I thought it would be. A person answers the phone and puts you on hold...I immediately hung up because there are more important calls that need to get through.

My neighbor and I bought 20 cases of water yesterday and we're going through our clothes, sheets, towels, etc. and will take them to the local Salvation Army. They are organizing now.

You can call them and see what they suggest. We all have to help.
