Russia offers help to U.S. after deadly hurricane

MOSCOW — Russia is ready to assist the United States in dealing with the damage caused by hurricane Katrina, which has taken 68 lives so far and left behind a tremendous amount of devastation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message to U.S. President George Bush Tuesday.

"Russia deeply sympathizes with Americans, who faced a disaster of such a colossal scale, and is ready to offer necessary assistance," Putin said.

Putin asked Bush to extend his condolences to families and relatives of those killed in the disaster.

"Accept my sincere words of regret in connection with the natural calamity in the USA. I know that hurricane Katrina, which swept the southeast coast of the country, resulted in deaths, left tens of thousands of Americans without roofs over their heads, and caused substantial damage to the region's economy," the message said. /RIA Novosti/

Great news - particularly since Russia probably has a lot of equipment and expertise (large cargo planes, heavy helicopters, rescue crews, etc.). As for other countries, I would be willing to bet that most major countries have already been in contact with our government to offer their assistance. One of the problems right now is that there may not be a clear picture of what is needed, and where any aid should be sent.

For example, if Canada is ready to send food and water to the victims, where would they send it? I hope I am wrong, but it seems that things are not yet sufficiently organized or progressing to the point that officials can even direct humanitarian aid to certain locations.

I just this minute got off the phone with my wife who is in Volgograd, Russia. She stated Russians are extremely upset, and are talking about nothing else. They are looking at where they can help.

I did a search on this earlier and found few condolences from around the world. The following is what I found offering condolences:
The Pope
Kosivo
Jamaica
Luxembourg
Greece
Canada
Bahrain
Saudi Arabia
Azerbaijan
Republic of Maldives
Russia
Ahem . . .Venezuela and Iran
President Jacques Chirac expressed condolences in a statement Tuesday regarding a fire that killed 7 people on the IVORY COAST. You would think that he would feel some kinship to the French descendent's in Louisiana.

Yes, many Russians are fine people. They cannot be blamed for having a couple of psychotic mass murderers that once held a gun to the heads of the populace.

According the the local news here in Norfolk, four Navy ships, the helicopter carrier USS Iwo Jima, amphibious transport dock ship USS Shreveport, dock landing ship USS Tortuga, and the salvage ship USS Grapple left this morning to join the USS Bataan (another helo carrier) in the Gulf of Mexico and provide relief efforts. The Bataan was on exercises in the gulf already.

GO NAVY!!!!

Your comment was completely uncalled for and out of place. There is no evidence Putin ever killed anyone. Indeed, my wife was a child psychologist in Russia and had attended a lay seminary. Putin had my wife and a couple of others write a Bible curriculum for the schools, and he had it put in a bill and signed into law. There are many other things he has done, which you never hear about.
