AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - An 18-year-old Dutch man who had been held by police on the Caribbean island of Aruba in connection with the disappearance of an American tourist arrived in the Netherlands on Tuesday.
Joran van der Sloot and his father arrived at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, ignored questions from reporters, and quickly departed. The 18-year-old was to attend college in Holland, his mother said.
Van der Sloot, a resident of Aruba, and two Surinamese brothers who were suspects in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway were released on condition they remain available to police.
Holloway was last seen May 30, on the last day of her high school graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island, leaving a bar with van der Sloot and the two brothers, Satish and Deepak Kalpoe.
The three were arrested June 9 on suspicion of involvement in Holloway's disappearance. All denied any connection to the disappearance. Van der Sloot acknowledged spending the evening before with Holloway, but denied any wrongdoing.
The release of all three suspects on Saturday was a serious setback to the prosecution. Police insist the investigation into Holloway's widely publicized disappearance will continue, but legal observers in Aruba say the release indicates the government has no case.
Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, left Aruba for her home in Mountain Brook, Ala., on Sunday, saying she had ``exhausted all my avenues'' after pressuring authorities since shortly after her daughter's disappearance.
If you go to Aruba, don't expect the local authorities to come to your assistance
There will be no protection from robbery or rape.
Tourists are simply cash cows... lose a cow, get another to replace it, and don't worry about it.
I'm not calling for a boycott of Aruba, but simply warning - if they can't catch a murderer (who ever it might be), they're sure not going to catch the guy who burglarizes your hotel room, or takes your wallet at knife-point.
Fair warning.
No. From previous experience I knew that nobody would be punished for this unless there had been radical change in the way Aruba operated from 30+ yrs. ago. Guess what? There are changes and almost all of them make the place worse than it was back then.
Yes, ladyjane. Chances are we will hear about this young man again unless his family hires him a permanent babysitter. Let's hope the next time he does something, he does it in a place where the Dutch are no better than anyone else.
like I always say..
Geraldo was just on O'Reilly saying that Van der Sloot's (van der SLUT per O'Reilly) Dutch confession was translated to English after being obtained by mom Beth Twitty - he says the confession says this:
Joran's statements:
- admits taking Natalee to his HOME around 1:40 am and having sex with her repeatedly as she was in and out of consciousness (no reason given for this)
- took her back to beach where he says Kalpoe brothers took over and took turns (gang-raping) her
- ultimately they buried her body in the sand on the beach and he can point out exactly where it is (no cause of death given)
Points: can't charge rape without a victim... (?? even with confession??)
Can charge murder without body, however. (so...?)
Amsterdam is one of the dirtiest and ugliest airports I have ever been in. Just FYI..
