Solar activity remains very high and shows no signs of abating. Sunspot 798/808 has unleashed seven X-class solar flares since Sept. 7th. Forecasters say there's a 75% chance of more X-flares during the next 24 hours, possibly causing radio blackouts and radiation storms.
Coronal mass ejections hurled into space by these explosions could hit Earth's magnetic field in the days ahead. Sky watchers, particularly in northern places like Canada and Alaska, should remain alert for auroras. The best time to look is local midnight. The sun's 27-day rotation is slowly turning sunspot 798 to face Earth. Explosions in the coming week will be increasingly Earth-directed, raising the possibility of geomagnetic storms and auroras over the continental United States, Europe and Australia.
This will be a great time for you lucky folks who live in the northern part of the country. The auroras should be very active. I wish we could see them in NM. They are so beautiful.

Considering there was a period of at least 100 years during the little ice age when there were no sunspots at all, clearly the Sun is putting out more energy in this 11 year cycle than it did then.
Thanks for the reminder. The sky is crystal clear tonight on the southern shore of Lake Erie, so I might get lucky. (The only time I ever saw an aurora was in Flint, MI.)
Doesn't look like any big time Auroral activity yet at all; you have to wait for a major earth-directed Coronal mass Ejection. Another couple days before sunspot 808 is in position to do that, then you need the BIG CME, and then you need 1-3 days for it to arrive.

You are fight about the global warming. The sun did it. The sun is 35% hotter in the last 100 years. I will not get rid of my 4X4 because I will need it in the coming ice age.

Thanks for the link. That sunspot is a whopper! I got interested in solar flares in 1998 and the cycle was supposed to end in 2000, but they're still going, and like you say, they're getting much stronger. It will be interesting to see when this cycle does end. They sure are hard on cell phone users, like me. I hate dropping calls. :o)

Do you guys ever get to see the auroras in TX? We've never had them, that I know of. I can only imagine how breathtaking they are. The pictures are so beautiful. I bet it's awesome to watch them in person.
