Ah...gotcha....:))

[how about a cordoned-off area filled with plain old dirt? sort of like a big doggy litter box?]

Aw jeeze.

I don't think I can look at those pages this soon again.

Maybe later tonight.

They're doing so well and saving so many but you can see the sadness in the eyes of the dogs.
How much they must be grieving for their owners...wondering why they aren't there with them.

Whatever you need to justify your unnatural animal "love" man.

Fact is God DID drown EVERY OTHER ANIMAL ON THE PLANET.

Aside from the idiocy of the first point. Your second point is terribly flawed too. God chose Noah and his family because they were good, KILLING EVERY OTHER HUMAN WAS THE POINT OF THE FLOOD!

Nice straw man, don't smoke next to it, I think it's soaked with gasoline.

They pee in it, so the dirt not only makes mud which would be tracked all around the shelter, but it's heavy, especially when weighted down with pee.

The wood chips / sawdust / shavings are lightweight, absorb the pee, and easy to shovel up into garbage bags for disposal. Plus, big plastic bags of these wood shavings can be stored at the pre-disaster warehouses, and can be stored at the shelters themselves when they are setup. Think of the big bales of wood shavings sold at pet and feed supply stores for lining cages or dog beds. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Very easy to work with, both before and after being "used."

What was I thinking?
Why does't anybody make 'scoopable' doggy litter?

I have a bale of those shavings that I use for my bunnies, geese and goat.
Wonder if I could convince the dogs to do everything on a pile of them placed out in the yard?

[I know, I know...I'm a dreamer]...;)

I called the Oregon Humane Society today and asked them the status of the older Rottie. She said she would ask the team when they check in, but because the team rescues and then transfers the animals to the triage units, they often don't know what happens to them after they leave them. I said "I bet they'll follow the status of THIS one."

I also asked her to ask them what kind of numbers of dead animals they are seeing. She said their blogs are representative of what they're seeing, i.e., they're not spinning it to the good and leaving out the horrors. So far, most of the animals they've encountered have been in fairly good shape. But she said they're all worried about what they'll find when they get into some of the worst flooded areas, and the chemicals in the water.

The Oregon team hasn't been working in the flooded areas. The Oregon team drove down with Animal Control trucks, so they have been used in the areas that were either not flooded or only lightly flooded.

Does anyone have a link to other rescue blogs for rescuers who ARE working in flooded areas?

Well actually... if you start when they're puppies I KNOW from experience you can do this. I have cedar chips in my dog run. When I whelped my litter, I put a low-sided box of cedar chips in the whelping box and the pups learned to potty in it. Helped keep the whelping box clean.

Some people have a very tiny patch of grass just for their dogs to potty on. They train the dogs (or the dogs prefer?) to potty in just that area.

Mine run off to the 4 furtherest corners of yard, back up into the bushes or behind trees and go.

[I guess they're shy like that]..;))

Oh Geez.... now it's getting bad. That poor skinny baby with it's pasterns all broken down and everything. Bless those Guardsmen for feeding him. I hope they rescued him so he can be fattened up.

And please tell me the photographer of the first pup rescued him/her???

Have you seen the story of the "DOG IN BOAT" ?

It's good that most dog owners have their dogs too fat in the first place, so they had some extra fat to live off for the last 2 weeks. But some owners have their dogs half-starved to begin with, and I think this skinny boy may have been one of those. Either that or he had been trapped inside a house or on a chain somewhere with no food. Because it seems like there would be a survive-able amount of trash/food and/or carcasses around that dogs/cats who are able to scavenge could do so. Unless they're just too scared to venture out of their familiar territory to scavenge.

I called HSUS this morning to suggest they use LIVE TRAPS to catch some of these strays. As you know, scared dogs are not easy to capture out on the streets. I know my dogs wouldn't go to strangers - they'd run.

They're setting up feeding/watering stations for the animals they can't catch. So I suggested they put out dozens of live traps. Then they don't have to spend valuable rescue time on trying to catch dogs/cats that are hard/impossible to catch. And they can also send less-qualified volunteers out in the morning to retrieve the trapped animals and replace them with new traps. This is something virtually untrained people can do, so the trained Animal Control and Search & Rescue people can keep rescuing animals trapped within houses without food/water.

The woman I spoke with on the HSUS call center said that was a NEW suggestion as far as she knew, and she was going to put it into the system right away. So if you have any contacts at other rescue groups, you might call them and make that suggestion, just in case it really is an idea that hasn't been implemented yet. I know I haven't READ anything about the use of live traps yet. Have you?

The swimming pit bull was cut loose from the chain he was on and he swam after the rescue boat for a while but then swam back to his own house.

They gave him food and water there.

The skinny pup looks like it wasn't weaned that long ago and probably had no fat reserves built up.

The page that came from tells of dogs everywhere trying to actually jump INTO the soldier's trucks as they drive through.

[of course, they may be some of those "vicious feral pack dogs" and are actually trying to attack the soldiers]..../dripping sarcasm

Is "DOG IN BOAT" sad?

I've about had my fill of sad.

Too bad I wasn't looking to lose weight because these pitiful dogs sure have put me off my feed...:-\
