Yes, thank God. Thank God she stayed in the boat! I wonder how long it had been since the spray paint had happened until the animal rescue people came along... an hour? Two days? And she stayed in the boat that whole time? Thank God is right.

Some of these rescued animals will make the BEST pets. They know when they've been saved from death, and they are forever grateful.

That skinny pup picture was taken on the 7th, only about a week after Katrina. So I think that was one of those that was half-starved BEFORE the disaster. Most people think my dogs are thin because you can see their ribs. But that's the way they're supposed to be. Most people have their dogs fat. Although I am constantly telling people to take the weight off their poor fat dogs, this is one time I wish everyone had their pets fat before the storm hit.

Most of the dogs they're still rescuing aren't nearly as skinny as that skinny pup, and it's been over 15 days. But the ones who were skinny, old, sick, or weak to begin with are starting to die. Very sad.

Skinny puppies just shouldn't be.....:(

My hounds are even thinner than yours and one of my girls is a *bit* tubby but she looks really weird when she's as thin as she's "supposed" to be.

She's a lot bigger overall than the average Ibizan so "beefy" is "normal" for her.

I do get sick of the "man....ya oughta feed them dogs" cracks though.

The skinniest "normal" dogs I ever saw were a Canaan dog and several Salukis.

I keep after my parents and their Chow.
He's not the usual "stocky" little thing...his belly hangs down like he's bloated or pregnant.
He's old and arthritic and I keep telling them they're doing his old bones no favors by allowing all that extra weight on them.

15 days.
Lord them help all.
Time is running out.

Bless her heart, she was probably "watching" it til her owners came back.

Most of my dogs over the years have been "11th hour" dogs and not a one of them ever forgot it.

Wow...I just realized how blessed *I* have been to have had them...:)

That's a "feature" on FR.
Sometimes you have to wait for the system to "catch up" and your post will appear...;))

These poor, poor babies... they never did anything to deserve this.

Yes, time is running out, and has ran out, for many of them.

I'm trying to fly down this weekend. It's not easy to line everything up all by myself though. I just haven't had any response from the sites where I signed up to volunteer. So I may have to strike out on my own to go rescue some animals.

This one's face is completely red.

Please try to keep us updated. And grab a smaller sized pup for me. We can figure out shipping arrangements later...

LOL... "How would you like your pup, Miss? They come in Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and Gigantic."

I doubt I'll be able to access a computer while I'm there, but if I can, I certainly will let you know how it's going. I just hope I can work out all the logistics and make it happen. (And I haven't told my boss yet... !!)

I know.
I was just over at Pet Finder reading the lost/found lists.

So many people begging for someone to save or find their pets.

I just can't stand to think about how they must feel.

I think it would kill *me*.

Well... let's wait on that until I do something successful. So far, it's a nightmare of logistics. All the rental vehicles are sold out at the Baton Rouge airport. Don't have an official contact yet. Don't have someone to pick me up at the airport and get me to the right area. Don't have a vehicle or a boat to do rescues on my own... So best-case scenario at this point is that I'd be cleaning cages and bathing animals. But it's killing me because those animals are already saved and alive... I want to save the ones who may not have another day or two to live. And cleaning cages is such a waste of my Hazardous Materials qualifications that could be used to rescue in the still-flooded areas, etc.

The whole thing is very frustrating right now.

"I never would've believed it of FR if I hadn't see it"

yup! Don't debate folks that "don't get it". Isn't worth the bother. No one changes here. Some think if you love you pet = PETA or some crap like that. There is a difference.

I'm Scots-Irish/Welsh & Danish.
When somebody swings a sword at me I go into auto-berserker mode no matter how obtuse and ill-informed the instigator may be.

[I'm kinda stupid like that but maybe someday I'll learn]...LOL!

I think the poster HAS her/his priorities "straight".

They were unwilling to shoot looters, rapists and murderers, but blasting Fido is apparently O.K. with them.

Well, its not O.K. with me.

Some of the responses to this post exemplify why Conservatives get a bad rap as being heartless.

Stop shooting the pets! There's a war going on. Every bullet we use shooting a dog in NO could be better spent shooting an islmowhacko in Iraq. Talk about getting prioritieds straight...

"Some of the responses to this post exemplify why Conservatives get a bad rap as being heartless."

Precisely!

Why don't conservatives have anything analogous to "animal welfare" or "environmental" groups?

I'm so far right it's ridiculous *but* I also have a deep, abiding and ingrained love of the land, nature and critters.

I *used* to be a Democrat but the -rest- of their ideology sickened me and I switched to Republican.

How many more 'borderline' Dems would do the same if they knew they had a viable, compassionate alternative?

A woman I know is fanatically anti-abortion and very socially conservative yet she sticks with the Dems because *they* are the only people who ever gave any support to her "no kill" shelter efforts.

Just about everyone I meet automatically assumes I'm a Dem because of how I "look" and how I treat animals and the earth with respect.

[Frankly, I'm tired of being insulted by those assumptions]...:))
