Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast
Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu
A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.
Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

'soft field' indeed.
Here's to a successful landing or getting the gear righted.
I suspect the plane will be grounded until they replace the seats soon to be soiled..

I also heard that it's an airbus, or how ever you spell it...
To: kingu
Heard about it on KFI. There's a landing gear problem. It's "bent" according to the reporter. She'll break in if the landing goes badly.

Soft field landings mean that the pilot touches the main two gear down and holds the nose off of the ground as long as possible. This ensures the lowest possible touchdown speed of the nose wheel.
Wish them the best of luck!

Holy smoles. My husband and I are leaving Friday on a Jetblue flight, and my hubby HATES to fly. If he hears this on the news, I may not get him on the plane.

Could get a litty noisy. All things considered, it's probably easier to control than losing one of the rear gear. (non pilot guess)

They are going out to sea to dump the fuel and make a landing attempt...

the gear is turned sideways and tilted.OMG!!
Hope they land safe.
To: Die_Hard Conservative Lady
It was headed to JFK....
Has a full load of fuel, trying to get the fuel unloaded over the ocean before attempting the landing. May take quite some time to dump that much fuel.
I guess this problem was noticed when they attempted to retract the gear on take off, the gear didn't respond, did a flyby to see what was wrong, did a "oh #@$@#" and then are now getting ready for emergency landing.

Boy you have that right....! I prefer Boeing planes...
To: kingu
Fortunately, this should turn out OK.... there are skid plates built in the nose of the aircraft in case of gear failure....
That is as long as the pilots are competent....
Hell of a ride for the passengers though.....
I'll never forget a flight where my wife was the passenger in back in a small aircraft and the rear door opened on approach....it was held partially shut by the rushing wind but the look on her face to me and my co-pilot was precious.....

We're too far west to matter to CNN or Fox.
KFI says there's a possibility of the gear snapping off and a nose landing occuring. Still dumping fuel between Catalina and the coast line.

Sounds about right. Should make for dramatic video but everyone should be fine. As someone said, a main gear would be a far worse situation. Probably better to do a full gear up landing then that. (private pilot here)

Are you sure they departed LAX? Jet Blue has a base at Long Beach and LB has a great crashcrew stationed there.
