NYP: A PHOTO-FIX FOR VOTING - Dean is shown up by Carter on Election Reform
New York Post ^ | September 23, 2005 | JOHN R. LOTT & MARIO VILLARREAL

On Monday, a bipartisan commission headed by former President Jimmy Carter and ex-Secretary of State James Baker surprised most observers and agreed that Americans should be required to have photo IDs to vote. In fact, though the American debate over this is vitriolic, photo IDs are commonly used to prevent voter fraud across the world.

Democrats often don't buy it. Howard Dean recently claimed that the Republican push for voter IDs is "a new Southern strategy and a new Jim Crow." Others have claimed that the requirement would victimize Hispanics, African-Americans and the poor. (Proponents answer that the IDs will actual prevent voters from being improperly challenged.)...

Americans are overwhelmingly used to presenting a photo ID. You need it to start a bank account or cash a check, drive a car or board a plane — even, if you look too young, to buy cigarettes or beer. Modern society relies on it.

The concern about Hispanics being discouraged from voting seems misplaced. Most notably, you have to show photo ID to vote in Mexico. And while Georgia allows voters to use any of six different types of photo IDs, Mexico inists on an official voter ID with a photo and a thumbprint....

Worldwide, many countries issue specific IDs for voting, though not all are photo IDs: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and South Africa, too. India and Pakistan may not agree on much, but they both issue voter IDs.

Former President Bill Clinton claims that voters IDs are part of "efforts to restrict access to the vote under the guise of preventing voter fraud."...

Not all the Democrats on the Carter-Baker commission endorsed the photo-ID plank, but only three of the panel's 21 members dissented....

if you can't cash a check - like a welfare check - without a photo id, how can the dems claim that the poor don't have such things?

kinds of a specious argument and they need to be called on it.

Didn't Carter come out VENEMOUSLY against photo ID?

He may be part of the panel but he is not against fraud.

I would add the requirement that one be a legal citizen of the United States, speak English, Show a photo ID, be photographed, and state the Pledge of Allegiance completely before allowing them to put their vote in the box.

The last part would eliminate half the liberals from voting.

I think you're right. In fact, I read an article just yesterday, right here on FR that said that Carter is totally against photo id's for voting.

Do it!

I hope this finally lets the dead voters rest in peace. Card-Carrying, Pinko-Commie-Liberals, only get to vote once like everyone else!

Dean and Clinton have this Washington Governess in mind who never was factually elected but won after votes popped up in insufficient amounts after one recount, but enough after the second.
This scheme even held up in court regardless of the fact that after votes were "found" that exceeded the number of registered voters.
IDs? Who wants or needs them.

"Bill Clinton claims that voters IDs are part of "efforts to restrict access to the vote"

that's right. It would discriminate against dead voters, multiple voters, illegal immigrants and other fraudulent voters.

How could we EVER let that happen!!! /sarcasm off

Not all the Democrats on the Carter-Baker commission endorsed the photo-ID plank,

Tell these morons that photo IDs would prevent the Republicans from stealing another election.

That would get their attention.

[/sarcasm]

The DEMS got to Cater after appearing with Sec. Baker and placing stamp of approval. This nonsense is B.S you need a pic I.D for renting videos, cashing their govt. checks, checking into hospitals for their medicaid benifits, hell the D.S.S issues pic I.D.s; it's all about fraud, plain and simple and if the GOP doesn't do something while they are in control, they will never win another national election.

Hillary came out bigtime against photo id cards in the speech to the Black caucus...why, as Rush says, so the DNC can continue the fraud at the ballot box. That has happened all over the country in the last electon..especially Washington State . Hillary healthcare program wanted photo cards...funny how she changes!! Photo id is the ONLY way to insure an honest election.
