Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

New thread, but ole Shep is still there with a stupid backward hat.

Maybe Fox should read these posts and learn what people think about these hams. But if the other networks are also into this foolishness, then I guess the only thing that would bring it to an end is to have the storm die out and leave them looking like idiots, or to have an accident.

I just hope that those who got themselves out of there can come back to intact homes, and those who chose to stay, will be safe.

Reporter on CNN said 3 buildings in Galveston are on fire and that there may be people inside. Said it's a pretty significant fire. One of the buildings may be a bank and the other is a historical home.

Rita 55 miles from Sabine Pass, moving 11 miles per hour.

Y'all need to clarify whether you're taking about Cosby or the storm

Steve from NWS in LA - Landfall expected between 11:30pm and 12AM for Cameron and Jefferson. If eyewall threatens more inland they will issue more warnings. No warning for Orange Co. TX at this time. Expecting issued warning for Cocaseux(sp? - my apologies for butchering!). Expecting tornado type damage over a wide area.

During TS ALlison a few years ago we got around 15 inches of rain all the way over here north of Baton Rouge. I prayed as the water almost came in my house a few times...thankfully it never did, but it was way too close for comfort!

Check out my commentary at the top of this thread...

fyi - this is the last thread I will be posting for Hurricane Rita. Gabz and Howlin will be posting threads going forward.

Godspeed to all FReepers in the path of this storm. I'll check in as often as possible, and I'll worry until I hear everyone is safe. Just ask ClearBlueSky...
