Some are calling former Marine captain Josh Rushing a modern-day Tokyo Rose for taking a job reporting for a new English-language channel of the Al-Jazeera network.

The Qatar-based network has been described by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as "perfectly willing to lie to the world.”

"I witnessed during the war how the U.S. media was co-opted by the U.S. government's messaging."

?????

Additionally, ????????

What a psychotic idiot. He's saying that the NYT and other MSM outlets including ABCCBSNBSCNN etc are all spewing government ideology and lies? Like Pentagon spokesthings or something? Is he on drugs?

I mean, they're lying all right. But that's a different story.

I guess we have to make an exception to the old saying "once a Marine always a Marine"

Media Bias ping.

He is willingly being used as a propaganda tool. He has acknowledged that he does not agree with AJ completely. That does not keep him from serving them.

I then offer up some links (elsewhere in the thread) that illustrate the different slants on this story from Time (US establishment media) and the UAE (which harbors anti-American terrorist sympathizers).

The UAE story was the oldest one on news.google.com. I find it interesting to see how the story is covered around the world. Especially in the Middle East since he believes it is important that his voice be heard there. He is clueless that he is being redacted. He is a useful idiot serving the cause of evil.

Should "Media Schadenfreude" pings only be used for Western journalists who work for Western news outlets?

The military wasn't happy when he appeared in the film Control Room. They were not happy when he was interviewed after the film came out.

What makes you believe that he has now changed his stripes to serve his government?

well, that's not for me to say... I'm only a former army officer. Closest i've been to being a Marine was when the old gunny spokesman for class of Marine e-6 through e-9's I taught told me "we all think the lieutenant should put in for a transfer to the Marine Corps, sir. We'll go to war with you any time."

Exactly.

Think about all those videos that make it to Al-Jazeera. They have to come from somewhere, and maybe having a guy on the inside might not be that bad of an Idea.

"What the Marines trained me to do was to represent the best of what America stands for to a foreign audience," he said. "That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

Yeah, what`s he going to do when AJ asks him to bash the imperialists?

I thought the Marines take care of their own.... and he's still breathing....

He may be sheep-dipped. Ya never know these days.

Well, there are two ways of looking at this. One is well represented here already.

The other is this. One of the key problems with the Arab/Muslim world is that for so long they have not had a free and open media. Despots and totalitarian regimes have always controlled information (and thus thought). Same in China. Was the same in the Soviet Union. This has quite obvious effects in how their culture collectively views and interacts with our own.

That whole populations are not just anti-American (and anti-West in general) but anti-Freedom as well should come as no surprise when they have never had anything resembling a decent media/news reporting apparatus (even though the benefits of living in a free and tolerant society are seemingly self-evident to us all).

It is obvious this culture needs a free and open media. It is equally obvious that to this point al Jazeera doesn't fit that billing. But one has to work with the cards one is dealt. Al Jazeera has pretty widespread viewership in the Muslim world. What needs to happen is al Jazeera needs to become more objective in its reporting of events.

Personally, I am confident that free market principles will (over time) force the network to tone down their anti-West attitude to at least the same level as the BBC and increase their objectivity to about the same level as CNN. Not ideal but worlds better than what we see now.

If this were to happen it would have a major impact on how the collective Muslim populations in the Middle East view the West, their place in the World and the future of their religion insofar as their acceptance of other religions and cultural practices goes.

Maybe this Marine has sold out and become sympathetic to the jihadists. But maybe he will also have an impact on this process in a positive way. I mean, they certainly couldn't get much worse.

The Marines should disown this POS and he should have his citizenship yanked.

All for starters...

Do you think Barry Goldwater's message could have survived the editors if he had opted to write for Pravda under the same reasoning?

Is that him? Unbelievable. Why would a former marine do this? I don't get it sometimes.
