Vapor Cone on the High-Speed Pass in September at the Cleveland National Airshow 2005. I can't find a photog credit.
The full-size pic is AWESOME!!
Apparently this effect happens when the sound barrier is broken with just the right atmospheric conditions.
Something screwy is going on. It's been working for the past hour.
The link in #1 now only works for me if I cut and paste it.
I saw a full size shot of that in the early 90s when I was visiting a friends house, he worked for Boeing and he got it there. It was digital, but fake.
That's shopped
Go figure. Maybe we're overloading somebody's server.
yep; if it's just right out, I'll see vapor coming off the prop tips of my bug smasher, and that's turning a seventy-some inch prop at 2700 rpm - definitely subsonic, though not by much.
That's the one--or very close to it. The one I saw was a custom-framed painting in the frame shop on Columbus AFB. It was painted by one of the guys in pilot training at the time and probably done based on this photo. The 'rooster-tail' had more vortex at the wingtips. It cost more money than I had at the time and just killed me to walk away from it.
Wouldn't you just love to see a 4-ship of these things screaming across the Saudi desert and the sand storm they would be pulling behind them?
How 'bout a movie?

perhaps they'll give us one-uh-theeezz for their Yankee Stadium flyover
In the '60's, the FAA decreed that no sonic booms at air shows ... no breaking the sound barrier.
So this guy DIDN'T continue on to break the sound barrier, because if he did ... he would be in BIG trouble.
Mike
That movie is FANTASTIC!
My husband took pictures like that at the Oceana airshows. Really neat to see in person.
Wow, that is cool.
Looks photoshopped. :o)
Photoshopped? You mean like the movie linked in my number 50? No, some photos are real.
Yep, I was kidding.
LOL!!!
