Mystery-Woman Miers (Has Supported ICC, Gay Adoptions, Tax Hikes; Some "Conservative," Huh...?)
World Net Daily ^ | 10/03/2005 | Joseph Farrah

WASHINGTON – Harriet Miers, President Bush's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace Sandra Day O'Connor, is on record as supporting the establishment of the International Criminal Court, homosexual adoptions, a major local tax increase and women in combat, WorldNetDaily has learned.

While some conservative leaders and organizations were stunned by the appointment, most were not alarmed by the lack of a paper trail by the nominee who has never served as a judge at any level.

But a profile of her positions as a leader of the American Bar Association, a Dallas city councilwoman and as presidential counselor is unlikely to ease the concerns of those who were expecting Bush to fulfill his promise to name a justice in the mold of Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia.

According to Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, Miers has taken positions as White House counsel that violate the law banning women in combat.

"As White House counsel, Ms. Miers either approved of the Department of Defense's illegal assignments of women in units required to be all-male, which is still continuing in violation of the law requiring notice to Congress in advance, or she was oblivious to the legal consequences of those assignments," she said.

Donnelly believes the actions of Miers could lead directly to a future court ruling requiring women to register with the Selective Service for the draft because they are now being, against the wishes of Congress, assigned to land combat.

"I am very disappointed by the president's choice," she said. "Ms. Miers does not have a judicial 'paper trail,' but her record as White House counsel is a legitimate cause for concern. Democrats and liberals who were willing to use the military for purposes of social experimentation have reason to be pleased."

Donnelly also concludes that Miers approved the Bush administrations retention of President Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell" regulations, which, she says, are different from the 1993 law passed by Congress

Meanwhile, during Miers long affiliation with the American Bar Association, she submitted a 1999 report to the ABA's house of delegates that included recommendations to develop and establish an International Criminal Court and the enactment of laws and public policy providing that the sexual orientation of adults be no bar to adoption of children.

Under the heading Family Law and subheading Adoption, the document states: "Supports the enactment of laws and public policy which provide that sexual orientation shall not be a bar to adoption when the adoption is determined to be in the best interest of the child."

Also included, under the heading International Law and Practice, is a recommendation for "the development and establishment of an International Criminal Court."

Along with the proposed agenda was a memo, dated Oct. 28, 1998, that explained the document.

"The Committee urges all Delegates to review this list for items of interest to their constituencies, and to act as the catalyst for further contact and action so that each entity will have the earliest opportunity for consideration and input."

The memo is signed by Miers as chairwoman of the Select Committee of the House.

As a city councilwoman, Miers also said Dallas had a responsibility to pay for AIDS education and patient services. And she courted the support of the Lesbian/Gay Coalition of Dallas in her successful 1989 campaign.

In addition, economic conservatives pleased by her corporate law background may find it distressing that in 1990 Miers voted for a 7 percent property tax increase during her short tenure on the Dallas City Council.

Ok, your post 294 supposedly answers my question. However, the follow-up post 299 from skr is certain in order.

I didn't find the web site (the committee actually) to be Conservative in philosophy by any stretch. It seemed more policy-wonkish with respect to the judicial appointment process. Lately, it's main goal seems to be doing battle with the Dem's attempts to shut down the nomination process. The principle seems to go at it with the People for the American Way.

I'd like to second skr's question though.

How is Donatelli responsible for the CFJ website? I haven't found her name amongst the members yet.

It's not: she's the person who paid for the domain name and the contact for it.

If you don't believe me, you can do the following from a computer with the applicable software:

"whois -h whois.networksolutions.com COMMITTEEFORJUSTICE.ORG"

Domain Name: COMMITTEEFORJUSTICE.ORG

Administrative Contact: Donatelli, Becki information@campaignsolutions.com 118 North Saint Asaph Street Alexandria, VA 22314 US 703-684-3435 fax: 123 123 1234

Clear enough now?

So, do you pro-life Miers supporters who trust that brick-wall President Bush to stack the court with someone who'll overturn Roe v. Wade see any disconnect with an individual who is obviously pro-abortion working to get Miers nominated?

Do you think that just maybe you should be a bit more skeptical?

Are you starting to get queasy feeling that you've been sold down the river?

Nawh, you're right... you should trust Bush. I'm sure he'll do the right thing (pun intended).

Look at the money trail for the person who registered the domain to which you're being directed and which claims to refute issues with Miers.

You'll note that that individual is giving money to 527's which are in turn exculsively supporting "pro-choice republicans" etc.

"Social" issues also have inherent costs in addition to the expenditure of overt government funds. Really, one is either conservative or not: how can he split the difference.

Tell that to the religious right. If the Dems didnt offend them on social issues and national defense, many of them would vote Democrat to get their free health care and social welfare net.

It would appear that she was hired for her campaign / fundraising skills. I would spend more time investigating the priciples of the group in question and a little less time investigating their WebMaster LOL.

"Far Right," eh? Clinton-style triangulation. Letting the whole world know that conservatives don't have a home in the GOP any more.

Fine. The GOP doesn't have a "lock" on conservatives' votes any more. As they're going to find out in about a year's time.

You missed the point, and she's not the webmaster.

Ah, well, I guess it doesn't matter :-)

Trust Bush. I'm sure it will work out just fine for you :-)

And, yes, Olympia Dukakis is a very talented actress.

is this an opinion you share with people when the name "Mike Dukakis" comes up?

btw--i didn't actually give money to the DNC nor to the Dukakis campaign... i was a starving student back then... i did give my time and energy, however...

Trust Bush. I'm sure it will work out just fine for you :-)

If you read any of my posts prior to our discussion, you will find that I am NOT one to to simply trust and that I actively encourage debate. I'm not participating in the Miers debate myself, but have inserted myself where I see dishonesty.

I couldn't tell if your selective analysis of Campaign Solutions / Donatelli was intentional obfuscation or not, which is why I asked the original questions.

Anybody can look up whois or political contribution databases. However, I think you have really taken some huge leaps to arrive at your conclusions.

I haven't looked closely at Donatelli, but I did see that a SVP worked on JC Watt's campaign. That was enough for me to conclude that you have engaged in excessive hyperbole.

And yes, I realize that whats-her-name is not the webmaster. Turn up your humor radar a notch. She is the Administrative Contact. That does not mean she "paid for" the domain as you stated. One of her underlings likely registered the domain when they were hired by the Committee for Justice. I'm sure the CFJ will be billed for it, but recognizing this and presenting it in this more fair fashion doesn't suit your scare campaign, does it?

You need to look at the CMJ, not a single priciple at Campaign Solutions.

I'm now questioning whether you are foolishly reading too much into your armchair detective work, or if you are merely employing dishonest tactics to further your own agenda.

Having said all that, rest assured that I am not overly pleased with the nomination. I think Bush could have done much better. I'm still asking myself "what was he thinking?" This is why I'm reading, but not presuming to know enough to opine on then nomination itself.

It looks as though Donatelli's organization bought the domain name committeeforjustice.net, .com and .org. Only .org is being used. The .net and .com domain's are not set up to direct one to the .org domain, which is not an efficient use of buying similar names if one is trying to direct people to a site. Looks more like a financial buy than a political one. The Committee for Justice certainly doesn't promote abortion, particularly since they have fought for conservative nominees to go through the process without filibusters. It's not clear to me how a pro-abortion person would be happy with CFJ's work.

Your link to the money trail indicates that the Hockaday-Donatelli Group, a campaign business that works for both pro-life and pro-abortion Republicans, is the recipient of, not the donor to the Wish List and Emily's List.

Aside from whom owns the domain name and it's .com and .net versions, what do you have to refute the actual article? The founder of CFJ is C. Borden Gray, a member of the Federalist Society. The People for the American Way certainly don't like him.

From http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx?oid=11467 :

This time, rather than working on behalf of President Bush’s anti-government tax cuts and privatization schemes, Mr. Gray is helping President Bush pack the federal judiciary with extreme right-wing judges who will be expected to, among other things, consistently decide cases on behalf of corporate interests and against the interests of ordinary Americans. Mr. Gray embodies both prongs of the grand right-wing strategy for drastically reducing the role of the federal government in protecting Americans’ liberties and acting on behalf of the common good – take away the legal authority by packing the courts with states’ rights extremists and take away the financial foundation of the social safety net with massive deficit-inducing tax cuts.

How is Mr. Gray's conservative approach subordinate to the owner of the domain his site is on? I have some skepticism, but Pres. Bush's track record in judicial nominations is consistent, so I'm willing to hear Ms. Miers out. The Senate needs to do its job. Name-calling and misrepresentations are neither acceptable nor useful. It's time to get realistic. We haven't got a justice on the Court now whom hasn't made a bad decision, and we're not going to get one that never will, no matter whom is nominated.
