BASIJ MILITIA TO ENHANCE IRANIAN DEFENSE
NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran has disclosed a plan to create a huge Islamic volunteer force to protect the regime from any Israeli or U.S. attack.
Iranian officials said supreme leader Ali Khamenei has approved a plan to greatly expand the regime-sponsored Basij militia. Under the plan, the Basij, which began as a volunteer movement, would essentially turn into Iran's third military ground force.
Under the plan, the Basij would have more than 1 million men under arms. The force would be deployed both along Iran's long borders with Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Turkey as well as in major cities.
Gen. Mohammed Mirahmadi, the Basij's deputy commander, said the militia's Ashura forces would be greatly expanded over the next few years. Mirahmadi said the Basij would form 2,000 Ashura battalions in an effort to enhance Iran's defensive capabilities.

if we used the technology we HAVE, the number of men would be irrelevant. Ditto for Israel.
Numbers mean little, one well-equipped US division w/ air support could take out twenty times that in open combat.
Major cities? This simply means that the bassiji will function as a formal political internal control as well as the nominally religious function they presently possess. They won't be there for defense against foreign forces, they'll be there to stifle internal dissent.
As well they might, because should the people they've been oppressing decide they've had enough there will be bassiji swinging from the lamposts.
nailed it...!!!

Police state: Iran grants sweeping new powers to Basij militia goons

Interesting, and I thank you - I hadn't seen that. The mullahs are sliding toward the practices of the Taliban, step by step. It's really a race between the Iranian population exploding and the mullahs putting enough police state controls in place so they cannot. So far the police state is winning.
Good for them. I don't know what good it'll do them, since it just means more dead muzzies per hit than we would have had prior.
