Hollywood Rocked: 'Gay Cowboy' Movie Becomes an Oscar Frontrunner

HOLLYWOOD ROCKED: 'GAY COWBOY' MOVIE BECOMES AN OSCAR FRONTRUNNER

Arriving with nudity and explicit gay sex scenes between two cowboys, UNIVERSAL/FOCUS FILMS's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has quietly become an award season frontrunner, interviews with Academy members reveal.

"It could very well be the last film standing at this year's Oscars," a top Hollywood producer not associated with the film explained from Hollywood.

"There was not a dry eye in the house at the screening at Telluride [Film Festival in Colorado]," says the producer, who asked not to be named out of respect for the cast and crew of the producer's own Oscar contender. "Watch it come out of the gate at the Golden Globes with super controversy."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS critic Jack Mathews predicts the gay cowboy movie, which takes place in Wyoming, may be "too much for red-state audiences, but it gives the liberal-leaning Academy a great chance to stick its thumb in conservatives' eyes."

Director Ang Lee's movie staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall.

But will a movie even Madonna calls "shocking" sit with the heartland?

Playwright and lifelong Wyomingite tells the STAR-TRIBUNE of Casper this week that she has never encountered a gay cowboy, and doesn't think it's right for Hollywood to portray Wyoming as a state with gay cowboys.

Her message to the writers of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: “Don't try and take what we had, which was wonderful -- the cowboys that settled the state and made it what it was -- don't ruin that image... There's nothing better than plain old cowboys and the plain old history without embellishing it to suit everyone."

Meanwhile, Michell Howard of the state's Travel and Tourism Division says her agency is already hearing a buzz that people in other countries are expressing interest in visiting Wyoming because of the film.

“It's gotten rave reviews from the international community,” she said. “I don't know if they're more tolerant or something, but they're viewing it as a great Western movie.”

I am doubtful about this film’s commercial prospects. I have twice seen trailers for Brokeback Mountain in theaters in Northern Virginia. On both occasions the audience started laughing halfway through.

Apparently, they do eat meat. My guess is that they can have their pudding since they do eat meat.

The last world wide hit they had out of hollywierd they denounced, "The Passion of The Christ", and that was only made because of Mel Gibson.

I expect Mel Gibson's production company to do well. They will make the movies that Hollywood no longer feels like making, but which America wants to see

This is the only way that Hollywood has left in its arsenal to protest.

My thoughts too!Liberal scum want to trash all that is good in the American lore and myth. So the cowboys of the West are the next.

Well ya know you are probably right about cownoys on a lonesome night taking advantage, but I doubt they took advantage of a queer, More likely a good looking hereford.

Hollyweird fawned and fainted all over Michael Moore not too long ago. Next year they'll be into bestiality.

This is really no shock.

well, according to the movie's website synopsis, the cowboys not only had that one night but reattached years later, and carried it forward......homes and family notwithstanding.

Let's just see how low total ticket sales can go.

At the box office, this will sink alongside "Alexander" and "Kinsley" and "De-Lovely". If a major Oscar contender, it will be the lowest rated Oscars in television history.

I haven't watched the Oscars since the mid-90's, when the GOP Congress wanted to cut funding to the NEA and the Hollywierdos threw a hissy fit.

I don't go to movies anymore. To paraphrase another FReeper, the messages in their movies rub me the wrong way to such a degree that I'd rather visit the dentist.

Hollywood (deviants, Communist apparatchiks, Christianity-haters, the whole lot of them) needs to be punished for their war on our values. Bankruptcy sounds like an appropriate punishment to me.

I saw a preview of this movie with a friend. I'd never heard of it, but she had read a lot of press in which the gay aspect was played up quite a bit. However, when you see the preview, it seems pretty clear that these guys aren't gay, but got carried while riding the range one night. These are not 'gay cowboys,' tho the gay press may want to make them so.

I suggest you read any synopsis of this movie and you'll see it is exactly a gay movie, and in fact it seems as if they mean to convey that the men's love for each other endures and transcends time and their marriages to women. I think this is an activist movie that means to show that gay love is not only acceptable, but better than hetero love, and that the "normal" paths people take with their lives are unfulfilling when compared to this supposed eternal gay love.

I find it somewhat humerous, in a sick way, that Gyllenhall wasted no time in grabbing a military movie where he could play a macho Marine.....

..and Ledger wasted no time getting some girlfriend pregnant to show how manly man he is.

..all, after making this movie.

I agree .. this will just cement the conservatives against Hollywood - causing more boycotting of movies. The studios are already hurting .. and yet they don't get it.
