Parents Sue After 14-Year-Old Daughter Died with Birth Control Patch

When the parents of 14 year-old Alycia Brown of La Crosse Wisconsin found out their daughter was sexually active, they did what the modern culture told them was the right thing to do; they put her on birth control, choosing the popular hormonal patch instead of the Pill. When on May 7, 2004, Alycia died suddenly of blood clots in her lower pelvis Michael and Lorie Brown decided to sue the deadly drug's manufacturer in the hopes of having it taken off the market.

The patch, which releases a dose of contraceptive hormones into a woman's blood stream through the skin, has been responsible for at least 17 deaths in women age 17 to 30 since its release in 2002, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

In September 2004, a study by the FDA revealed 21 "life-threatening" conditions related to the patch such as blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. The Browns' lawsuit claims the company intentionally withheld information from its own clinical trials and Food and Drug Administration records suggesting the increased risks.

Thus far, Alycia is the youngest of the patch's victims. Her mother told the La Crosse Tribune that the suit is only partly about collecting damages. "More than anything, I want it taken off the market," she said.

"Maybe I'll be able to save a life, if people know what happened to her."

Earlier this month, Ortho-McNeil agreed to improve the warnings on the labels for the patch to include the information that it had possible fatal side effects. The company admitted that the patch exposes women to about 60 percent more estrogen than those using typical birth-control pills.

The liberal mindset can be dangerous to children.

Many things on the market have potential fatal effects ~ many people are helped by them, or find some benefit, and others don't.

When it comes to drugs, not all drugs are suitible for all people. I can't use statins for example ~ and every time you hear an advertisement about them they give you a warning about a "rare" genetic difference, etc., all of which is true. But should statins be taken off the market simply because they would probably kill me if I continued using them?

If she had just kept he legs Le Crosse(d)she would be alive today.

That is a bit simplistic, don't you think?

What's simple is true. Abstaining works every time it is used.

Wow! Living with blinders on, how do you manage?

There is absolutely ZERO excuse for a parent who allows their 14-year-old to be have sex. They can't drive, they shouldn't be allowed to go anywhere unsupervised, they shouldn't be allowed to date except under very controlled circumstances, they can't rent a motel room, they don't have their own apartments.

You know where most 14yo kids who are having sex, have sex? I've read the studies, because I have a teenage child of my own and will have 3 more before I'm done. The place most 14yo kids have sex is in their own homes, between the time they're out of school and the time their parents come home from work. Given that the answer to preventing a sexually active 14yo is to arrange babysitting or have one parent quit work, which do you think shows more love for a child ... doing that, or putting them on a contraceptive???

Actually there are elements within the Planned Parenthood orbit who are into abortion for purposes of Ba'al worship.

But 5,000,000 women regularly use this patch according to the paper. That's a lot. >>>

yep, that's a lot of women contracting AIDS, Herpes, HPV since they are not using a barrier method. So, they will die from maybe AIDS, cervical cancer from the HPV or multiple sex partners. Yep, it's a great drug.

Don't know how many of the 5 mil. are married; however, if they are single, and aren't having sex with a virgin; they may be in for a death sentence from an STD.

Didn't your earlier post infer that the patch shouldn't be on the market at all because of the very small chance of fatality? That contradicts your risk post to which I am responding. I would not put my sexually active daughter on the patch because it doesn't protect from std's. I would try to figure out why she thinks so little of her body and her self that she would be sexually active at 14, then I would lock her in her room. :) Just from listening to the commercials for the patch she shouldn't be a candidate for the patch. It is meant for women who are in committed relationships where neither one is sleeping around to put the other at risk for an std, not a 14 year old girl.

The development of blood clots that the article talks about is actually Deep Vein Thrombosis, a formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in one of the deep veins of the body. Generally they're found in the femoral vein or the popliteal vein or sometimes in the pelvis. There is some debate over whether or not the contraceptive patch is more likely to cause blood clots than the regular pill form of contraceptive.

There are, however, several habits and conditions that will increase the chance of forming a blood clot. A major increased risk factor is smoking, but others include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, long periods of inactivity, and obesity.

There are usually warning signs for DVT such as unusual pain or swelling and nasty headaches. Regardless, only about 5% of people who develop DVT die from the complications (known as a pulmonary embolism).

I know that lifesite has an agenda, but the article was at best incomplete and at worst misleading.

Were the parents THAT mindless? Didn't they take the time to ask the doctor if their might be side effects? And I can't believe doctors who would go along with a 14 year old having sex. Everything is just you know... up for grabs these days. Including standards. Now there's an old-fashioned word liberals run away from because its too judgmental. The funny thing is while the parents here were completely NON-JUDGMENTAL about their daughter's sexual behavior, they're more than willing to be judgmental about the drug company's birth control patch. Liberalism is so screwed up.

Then you will be saddened, because I truly believe all I wrote.

I don't know where you're coming from, and why you feel the need to defend Planned Parenthood....

..but I have been involved with prolife for years....at all levels, and I know Planned Parenthood for what it is.
