As for this notion of liberal Jews supporting Israel, that is just not the case.
All over the world right now Israel is under attack, because somewhere along the line it became leftist dogma to side with the Palestinians against Israel.
The fact is that evangelical christians that I know are the best friends to Israel I know of, and even when I differ with them on some issues, I admire their commitment to Israel.
Can someone recommend a good book on this topic? The Munich incident happened wen I was in junior high school, and I remember it well. I would like to learn more about the subsequent hunt for the murderers.
Then we must not omit the memorable: We are smart. We are smart. We are smart.
I'm wondering how much money was lost on that movie and how many more of these flops Spielberg, et al can afford before they go broke.

"...........But by setting those concerns against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, you will cleverly sidestep having to contend with the kind of overwhelming backlash you would face if your movie made any direct politically charged controversial statements about America's own current war on terror..........."
Agree 100% with the author's "suspicion" and the 'inference', in the second highlighted point, he's drawing from it.
Because Spielberg is NOT risking his career. Let's face it. Liberal Jews are generally secularists, whos primary religion is actually liberalism. However, one vestigal part of Judaism they retain is "Jewish guilt." That guilt allows them to believe that Israel and Jews are now the oppressors, and that the poor palis are the oppressed minority who are valiantly fighting back against a mighty and evil opponent (that would be Israel).
Spielberg only needs to satisfy liberal Jews, which claim to speak for all Jews these days.

I remember that one... Good movie!

This was a strange time in history. My mother worked for an Egyptian travel agency and then for a Egyptian travel counsel in NYC between 1971 and 72. They used to receive death threats from jewish extremists. My father who worked for radio liberty at the time, was so nervous he finally made her leave their employment.
We ended up going to the Munich olympics that summer...because of the worldwide youth riots in the late 60's early 70, most of us weren't that concerned with violence yet. But Munich proved to be the beginning of the Islamic terrorist movement. I certainly don't recall any anti-jewish feelings at the time. It just seemed that there were extremists on every side.
If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.
Islamic Terrorism actually began before 1972...
No one has seen the movie and already its being criticized. Maybe we should wait.
It is my understanding that Spielberg DOES support Israel and the war in Iraq. If I'm misinformed, please let me know.
I think politically that Israel benefits most from the influence of Conservative Jews and Conservative Christians who give both money and political capital to the effort..as well they should.
What amazes me is that Conservative Christians being a friend is Israel is just now starting to sink in. In some Jewish circles.
Meir Kahane?
"Sirhan believed himself deliberately betrayed by Kennedy's support for Israel in the June 1967 Six-Day War, which had begun exactly one year before the assassination. After his arrest, Sirhan's journals and diaries were discovered, many entries obsessing over a desire to kill Kennedy. Sirhan later also claimed he acted unconsciously, possibly as the result of "hypnotic brainwashing" which some have attributed to the CIA's MK-Ultra program."

"It just seemed that there were extremists on every side."
But only one side hijacked airplanes and killed people, including Olympic athletes.
Kahane's apex was considerably post-Munich....I'm not sure what the other poster meant by extremists on both sides?
A. It won't wreck his carrear nomatter what.
B. Is it automatically bad because it isn't 100% pro-isreal?
C. I'm not convinced it won't be fair. Have you seen the excellent Documentary 'One Day In September' by Kevin MacDonald? It's about the same topic, and was fair in the sense that it quoted the Palestinians and let them have their say, but it was clear that no person with a moral compass of any sort would agree with them. Great movie, check it out.
true it did start before 72...but I think the public awareness to it was shaped by the Munich bombings. It was just so shocking.
