Bush Presses Congress on Immigration Plan

WASHINGTON - President Bush is stepping up pressure on Congress to embrace his plan for a guest worker plan for foreigners while talking tough about illegal immigration and a need for secure U.S. borders.

"Those who enter the country illegally break the law," Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address. "In communities near our border, illegal immigration strains the resources of schools, hospitals and law enforcement. And it involves smugglers and gangs that bring crime to our neighborhoods. Faced with this serious challenge our government's responsibility is clear. We're going to protect our borders."

This week, the president made appearances in Arizona and Texas that focused on border security and immigration, two items he says will top his legislative agenda next year.

His goal is to catch more foreigners crossing the border while increasing the number of temporary work visas for those who will take jobs that Americans are unwilling to fill. He is trying to appease social conservatives who take a hard line against illegal immigrants and business leaders who want to hire foreign laborers.

Any guest workers have to be spayed to prevent anchor babies.

Bush is still pushing his "Harriet Miers Immigration" plan? We (conservatives) are going have to correct him on this, too.

The whole reason we have an illegal alien invasion in the first place is because the politicians knew the people wouldn't allow that many unskilled Mexicans to immigrate here legally. So, Bush's "Harriet Miers Amnesty" program is DOA.

I bet you defended the Harriet Miers nomination, too, huh?

Why is it bashing to disagree with him? I support most of what he does. Here, I don't. It might be a good idea down the road but he needs to clean up some stuff he inherited first.

Yep, the AssPress is spinning and taking Bush's quotes out of context again.

It is time to cut Bush some slack here. He stated that illegals who enter the country are breaking the law. He has stated it's time to defend the borders. You know and I know that one thing about Bush, is that he's a man of his word.

There has to be some type of limited guest-worker permit program. Even Tancredo is in favor of such a plan. THIS PLAN IS NOT I repeat, NOT an amnesty. I'm sure that Congress will limit the size and scope of a guest-worker plan (I understand that Bush's proposal is too liberal and needs to be scaled-down - I am not in favor of Bush's guest-worker plan but there has to be some type of mechanism that forces illegals already here to register, get ID'd, work, and leave, say within 2-3 years).

El Busho said those exact words in his SOTU speech earlier this year. Get a transcript and see for yourself.

Bush is much better on the border issue than dems.

Bush is for more border patrol, more detainee beds, extending the wall to the california coast, predator drones on the border, fingerprinting on the border, ending catch and release. Dems are all against those policies.

Dems like Hillary also want in state tuition and affirmative action for illegals.

Bush is great on the border issue. Even the guest worker program should be applauded because it brings the illegals out from the shadows and gives the govt their names where they can be deported. The only way to deport all these illegals is to get them out of the shadows and their names to the govt.

Bush has done a million times more on the border than Clinton ever did. Kerry wanted permanent amnesty for all illegals. Bush is against amnesty and wants them to come out of the shadows so they can be deported later on.

Any "solution" that includes the words "guest worker", only really intends to make the problem worse.

Absolutely. Since the biggest problem is the unwillingness of these folks to assimilate (and our unwillingness - due to multiculturalism - to insist that they assimilate) a guest worker program reduces the last shred of encouragement for them to act like Americans. So we will have just as many, or more, of these people here with even less reason to adopt English or otherwise adjust to American culture.

"I hope Congress pushes back with the right answers."

They will, and it will be the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act.

"Those who enter the country illegally break the law," Bush said"

....then the President said to himself... "yeah, they break the law, but what's more imporant, the law or cheap labor and the hispanic vote"?

Yeah, Bush is so great on illegal immigration that employer sanctions declined from several hundred per year under Clinton to 3 in 2004, under Bush.

Way to go, Jorge.

I can visualize Bush talking to Fox the night before the speech telling him, "Now don't worry about what I say to the American people about protecting the border, I don't mean a word of it."
