Lott was the sole sponsor of this bill. There was an earlier thread that says he is suing his insurance company because he didn't have flood insurance. This bill appears to my untrained eye to provide some home owners to purchase insurance RETROACTIVELY.

Could someone who understands these things better than me check this out? It looks like the legislation MAY have benefitted him personally.

We all understand the horrible state of affairs on the coastal areas of The Gulf. Having said that, if homeowners did not property insure themselves (which is the case), they'll have a hard case to prove.

Very few homeowners took out flood insurance assuming that hurricane insurance was an umbrella. We all know what happens when you ass-u-me things.

Wow. If that's true, it's really bad news.

We have to avoid even the *appearance* of personal gain.

suing his insurance company because he didn't have flood insurance.

I'm suing my grocery store because I'm out of peanut butter.

I don't respect Trent Lott

And his hair looks like one of the plastic wigs for little girls in the early 60s

Oh man this is bad. If contract law goes out of the window then the USA is going to end up like Zimbabwe.

Yes, and it is only going to make insurance more expensive for everyone else.

It would take a law to make insurance "retroactive". It's like having a car accident without insurance and the going back and telling the insurance company they have to accept your $250 premium for a $10,000 claim or defend you against a law suit.

IF this is true, Trent Lott is an egotistical greedy SOB. What about the people of Mississippi who couldn't even afford flood insurance because they have lost everything?

The Republican Party doesn't need morals like this. I'm trying to teach my kids right from wrong, and this is dead wrong if true.

Why do this? His cool cowboy hat could fetch him a couple of million bucks on eBay.

Trent Lott is a perfect example of the political elite that are ruining this country. Much like "limp" Frist and HCA, I wouldn't be surprised for one minute if this bill were retroactive and he stood to benefit from it.

If you think his hair is goofy, you should see the pictures of him at GWB's ranch in Crawford with a 10 gallon cowboy hat on. What a clown....

LOL! So the next question is whether Lott did or did not graduate from clown college (apologies to good clowns everywhere, but inquiring minds want to know)?

And just think of the possibilities if he is again elected majority leader!

Can I get a retroactive lottery ticket option?

If this is retroactive, what company would even sell flood insurance or insurance for that matter?

It would cause instant bankruptcies unless the federal government financed it.

I called the Senator's office in Washington. They had no immediate comment, but said they are informing him that he's getting hammered on freerepublic.

Hopefully he will make a statement saying that his bill would not benefit him in any way.

I can't add much except that in a hearing about 3 weeks ago or so I watched Nagin's testimony before Congress and they discussed this concept of allowing home owners to retroactively purchase flood insurance. I didn't hear any Congress critters protest but acted like this was one option to consider etc Cowards.

Actually Haley Barbour of Mississippi had this idea too.

Barbour has said he believes Congress will enact legislation allowing homeowners devastated by Katrina to buy into the federal flood insurance program retroactively. At an Oct. 17 press conference, Barbour said: “It is clear to me that the equity of the situation is that the federal government has an obligation to these people, because it was the federal government who told them they didn’t need flood insurance, but no decision has been made.”

On Nov. 7, Barbour said: “I consider retroactive flood coverage to be the single biggest issue facing the citizens of Mississippi right now.”

"suing his insurance company because he didn't have flood insurance"

He did not have flood insurance? How in God's name would some one whose house is less than 100 yards from the SEA WALL not have flood insurance? Now he sponsors legislation that will allow him to buy flood insurance retroactive? And his brother-in-law, Dickie Scruggs is suing State to pay flood damages for for Lott?
Folks I need help down here. Move down and help me vote these scalawags out. Not just Lott. all of them.
