Census: Idaho is nation's third fastest-growing state

BOISE (AP) — Idaho, boosted by an influx of new residents and one of the highest birth rates in the nation, is the third fastest-growing state.

Estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau today showed Idaho’s population grew by about 34,000 people, or 2.4 percent, between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2005.

“Our strong economy continues to attract people and investment into the state,” Idaho Commerce and Labor Director Roger Madsen said in a statement.

But residents will likely still be able to find elbow room as the state’s population of slightly more than 1.4 million people ranks it as only the 39th most populous in the nation, while it ranks 14th in land area.

According to the Census, more than 61,000 people came to Idaho from other states, and an additional 14,500 came from other countries, easily outnumbering residents who moved away.

Idaho also had the sixth-highest birth rate and sixth-lowest death rate. The state’s 7,776 births per 100,000 residents offset the state’s 3,656 deaths per 100,000.

Maybe they're coming for the Idaho potatoes. I'm a potato lover myself. :)

Too bad the article says the state still won't be able to earn a congressional seat. It'd be pretty safe for us.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. You still have far more than enough land to be comfortable. I'm from Maryland, one of the most densely populated states in the USA.

That settles it. I better hurry up and move there before every one else gets the good spots.

I have to laugh at the STATES FULL idea. I live in far northern Kalifornia. Them city folks just keep showing up and running up the price of property and then trying to change the place so it is just like the beehive life they left in the first place. In two years they will be telling anyone with an out of state plate that they are natives.

We still have about five years to go and with the depopulation in Louisiana, that may help Idaho to get an additional seat. Plus, many states in the liberal New England region are in decline now.

Indeed, Utah is growing rapidly too. I wonder if the top six states with highest birthrates are the ones with the highest % of Mormons in the nation?

The last two years, the Meridian school district (just west of Boise) had 2000 more kids show up than were expected.

Just curious -- where were you born M.D.? I was born in Blackfoot and had to leave because I couldn't make a living in the state. I was treated like dirt when I tried to move "home" some years ago because my car had California plates. I found that "Idahoans" who are most against newcomers were born in places like Pittsburgh, Poughkeepsie, New York City, etc.

Nevada is growing due to influz of out-of-staters; the same with Arizona, North Carolina, and Florida.

Interesting to note that the top eight states in population growth were all won by Bush in 2004 and all have fairly conservative legislatures that have created a good business climate in these states. Not surprisingly, ambitious people move to the states with the best business climates and the strongest economies.

You caught me, I grew up in Indiana. ;)

See my other post about the schools. I think the problem with "Californians" is that they are coming here for the real estate prices. Lots of rental property being bought. Maybe the problem too is that to a lot of people, California=Liberal

Idaho’s population grew by about 34,000 people...

Whoop to Friggin' Do!

That many people are run over every year by garment trucks in NYC.

Plus it is interesting to note that states in population decline are all won by Kerry in 2004 and controlled by the 'Rats.
