Men. I can not confirm this with any searching/Googling yet but: It seams that the new recruits of Paris Island (Marine boot camp), will be issued a "sress card" to be used when a drill instructor stresses them out enough. All they need to do is pull out the card and wave it in the instructors face and the instructor needs to back off. Also, the thing called the crusible (hell week)is no more. I know this because I just needed to send back a PFC new Marine on Christmass day. We droped him off at Philly air port to finish the second leg of his training in NC. On the trip down to the air port Mat was telling myself and his mother that he was one of the last of the "REAL" Marines. Word spread via grape vine/his pears about the new, as he says "sisified" batch of Marines. He also, contributes this to an orginization called "Marine moms". I may be wrong in the exact name of the group, I was so hot headed about this. But, it's that or something like that. I needed to quite down in my rantings with it being Christmass day and his mother was upset enough- sending off her son for a 5:55PM flight. I went to his graduation at Paris Island and it was moving and impressive. As I choked back tears at the serimony I was thinking that atleast they haven't infiltrated(to the point that it will make them inefective) the Marines. I seem to be wrong.

I wasn't a marine but admire the corps. I was in the US Army (1961-63), whom I also admire. Out "relatively easy" training included jogging to the rifle range for 3 weeks (an 8-mile round trip)and a 3-day bivouac on a rocky slope in a pup tent in the rain and cold of now-defunct Fort Ord.. Once at the firing range we fired M-1 Garands without ear protection. The noise was literally deafening, my right ear being over the stock, nearly on top of the firing chamber. I tried putting cotton in my ears to salvage my hearing. The sargeant on the line asked: "What are those for?" "To protect my ears, sergeant," I replied. "Who told you to put them in," the sargeant demanded. "Nobody,sargeant," I replied. "Get 'em out!" he growled. That's how the Army made men in those days. Men who lacked their upper-range hearing, but men nonetheless.

The Crucible -- Recruit Training's Defining Moment
The Crucible is a test every recruit must go
through to become a Marine. It tests every recruit
physically, mentally and morally and is the defining
moment in recruit training.

The Crucible is no walk in the park, unless your idea of
a walk in the park takes place over 54-hours and includes
food and sleep deprivation and approximately 40 miles of marching.

The entire Crucible event pits teams of recruits against a
barrage of day and night events requiring every recruit to
work together solving problems, overcoming obstacles and helping
each other along.

The obstacles they face range from long marches, combat
assault courses, the problem-solving reaction course, and
the team-building Warrior Stations. Each Warrior Station is
named for a Marine hero whose actions epitomize the values
we want recruits to espouse.

Bottom line -- The Crucible is a rite of passage that,
through shared sacrifice, recruits will never forget. With
that memory and their Core Values learned in recruit
training, they can draw upon the experience to face any
challenge in their path.

I think it goes beyond learning to follow order. I think it gets to where you just do what you are told to do without even thinking about it. Seems like a bad thing to train someone to do, except that in combat it usually is the difference between life and death.

A woman with whom I worked said her daughter was in boot camp they had stress cards. They also allow Marines to dress in PT outfits prior to PT instead of BDUs. Now, I like underarmour, but I doubt they make a combat line.

In fact, UnderArmor happens to make a variety of products for military uniforms. I own several, and they're all top notch quality. Far better than any normal issue shirt.

And the stress card thing is an urban legend. They may have had contact info cards, but nothing that you could dare wave in the face of a Drill Sergeant like a crucifix to a vampire.

I once questioned my DI's parentage and he took me behind the barracks and beat the ship out of me.

In '69 we had an extra incentive not to do that kind of thing.The DIs would often remind us of how easy it would be for them to arrange for us to be assigned to a tropical climate far,far away.

We never tested them to see if they were bluffing.

Refresh my memory. If you are in the middle of your boot camp training cycle at Christmas, do you get to go home for Christmas or New Year's leave? I don't think it was like that in the Old Corps... As I recall, you got four extra hours on Christmas day for spit 'n polish, and you sang Happy Birthday Jesus, and that was about it.
