Apple profit surges 95 percent on iPod sales
Yahoo News ^ | 01/18/2006

Apple Computer reported a 95 percent rise in quarterly profits on exploding sales of its iPod music players, and notched more than one billion dollars in sales through its retail stores. ADVERTISEMENT

Apple s stock, though, fell in after-hours trading because Apple offered a forecast that fell short of Wall Street estimates.

Apple reported net income of 565 million dollars, or 65 cents a share, for the first fiscal quarter to December 31, up from 295 million a year earlier. The report beat analyst forecasts of a profit of 55 cents per share.

Sales rose 64 percent to 5.75 billion dollars. Chief executive Steve Jobs disclosed Apple's quarterly revenue result January 10 at the Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Consumers snapped up 14 million iPod devices during the holiday quarter, and Apple has now sold more than 40 million since late 2001. The groundbreaking product has transformed Apple from a niche PC maker into the leading purveyor of digital media.

Apple also sold 1.25 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, a figure that was up 20 percent from the year-earlier figure. Apple is in the process of transitioning its Mac line to Intel rocessors, and it expects to have all of its PCs running on Intel chips by the end of this year.

"We are thrilled to report the best quarter in Apple's history," said Jobs.

Has Apple fixed the battery issue with Ipods?

Did the US win WWII?

Old history, both.

Who the hell wants an MP3 player built into their cellphone?

I agree. I personally prefer a machine that does a few things really well. Others seem to be impressed by how many functions can be crammed into a single device.

I'm reminded of the forever wars in audio design. Some prefer clean component design with a minimum number of controls. Some can't have enough buttons, sliders, faders, knobs, etc. The beauty of the free market is we get a choice.

And he pulls out an iPod Nano
With his iTunes on the sly
Then sits back in glorious expectation
Of a genuine Apple high

Bwwaaa! Outstanding!

1. If you're a PC user you have to learn how to use iTunes, a fairly complicated and finicky piece of software, just to copy music to the iPod.

Check. Complicated software.

Did you know that the new iTunes spys on you? It's true! The mini-store sends back information about what you are playing. You have to turn it off to be safe from Apple's prying eyes.

I am waiting for the lawsuits. There's gold in Apple HQ, I've heard.

Order early. I hear there's a big demand for these.

Any idea when this event will take place? I'm in the market for a new Mac and this sounds like it's worth waiting for.

You may say IPOD's are just a FAD, but I gotta tell you I love mine. It's one of the better Birthday Presents my wife ever got me and she didn't have to spend a fortune for it.

Now those IPOD's with the little TV screen - yea those are a bit much, but my simple little IPOD with 160 of my favorite songs is wonderful.

Cellphones will quickly become a "do everything" device.

Not necessarily. All-in-ones don't always do well. I used to have Palm and a nice cell phone, then I bought a combo Palm/cell and I don't believe it does either role well as well as the standalone products I had. Plus, why buy a phone (which usually comes with contract, etc.) when all you want is a music player? And then there's the fact that many places won't let cell phones in because of noise or security, so you lose your tunes when you're there.

It's just personal opinion as to whether all-in-one is better, but the iPod will be here for a while for these reasons among others.

You can do so much better than an iPod at such a better price.

If all you're looking for is storage size for the money, you're right. Otherwise, the iPod starts to look better.

Apple is working on iPhone. Stay tuned...

The first model will be called the iPhone Shuffle. When you want to make a call it will dial a number at random.

I've used most of the computer mp3 players/music managers on the market since the late 90s, and I settled on iTunes for Windows as the best. I've now been using it longer than I've used any other.

2. Apple should offer a separate battery charger for their newest iPod models at extremely low cost

Apple already sells one, but it's their usual well-designed deal, and you pay for it, $29. Apple did count too much on people leaving their iPods plugged in to the computer for charging. But you can get one for under $10 that looks like a standard AC adapter with a cable.

Has Apple fixed the battery issue with Ipods? It used to be you couldn't replace the battery, so when the battery ran out in a year, oops that 300 dollar Ipods now worth about 3 cents.

Apple still keeps with the design decision to save weight and size and improve reliability by keeping the battery built-in. Apple will replace the battery for $50 if the iPod is out of warranty, or you can DIY with a kit for less. YMMV on battery lifetime, but I know people with first generation iPods still using them on the original battery.

My first experience with these was the early multifunction office devices, printer, fax, phone, copier, scanner all in one. It didn't do any of them as well as the individual machines, and made doing any of of the tasks more complicated than it should have been.

I'm a BIG fan ... but the earnings came in under expectations.

Huh? Are you saying the article is wrong? It says:

The report beat analyst forecasts of a profit of 55 cents per share.

You haven't used Creative's programs, I see. iTunes is great compared to that crap, and loading your music onto the iPod is as simple as hitting the Sync iPod option.

If you're used to Apple's program interface conventions, then iTunes is actually fairly easy to use. Problem is, Apple kept that interface on the PC version, when they should have re-written it from the ground up so it has a familiar "look and feel" of a Windows program.

I have the fm transmitter for using it through my truck stereo, an arm band for jogging and the Bose Sound dock. And since when does "need" have anything to do with what people get? No matter how many extras people get, the fact that there are tons of things out there to get is something people will look at when buying.

Read the article I posted on post 19. You are not that familiar with the stock market perhaps?

Nothing wrong with that but ... Anyway, as expected (as shown by the aftermarket) the stock is down. 79.99 so far.

It will go up soon though. :)
