Belafonte: Homeland Security the New Gestapo
NewsMax ^ | January 20, 2006 | Carl Limbacher

Entertainer Harry Belafonte, one of the Bush administration's harshest critics, compared the Homeland Security Department to the Nazi Gestapo on Saturday and attacked the president as a liar.

"We've come to this dark time in which the new Gestapo of Homeland Security lurks here, where citizens are having their rights suspended," Belafonte said in a speech to the annual meeting of the Arts Presenters Members Conference.

"You can be arrested and not charged. You can be arrested and have no right to counsel," said Belafonte.

Belafonte's remarks on Saturday — part of a 45-minute speech on the role of the arts in a politically changing world — were greeted with a roaring standing ovation from an audience which included singer Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, and members of the arts community from several dozen countries.

Belafonte must be in need of an enema.

Nothing turns a Lefty on more than being "oppressed".

For someone to use the "Gestapo" word after just getting back from a Chavez ass kissing, is ridiculous.

Go buy some beachfront property down there in socialist leftist Venezuela and flee this awful police state Gestapo. Take that banana boat ride song with you too. You and your hollyweird artistic cohorts get rich and famous in the USA then stab it in the back. Worthless slime oozers.

>I don't even think he should stick to entertainment. Belefonte's bell has done lost it's ringer. ;)

The pathetic good-for-nothing racist never had a ringer. More like a muffled sound.

Belafonte: Homeland Security the New Gestapo

If that were true, Belafonte would be a lampshade by now.

I wish they'd arrest him and not give him counsel. Just the fact that they don't, begs the question (once again) who's rights are being abused? Nobody's rights are being abused. Jews should be outraged that he compares security officials to the Gestapo, (who, if I remember right, sent Jews to the concentration camps) how the hell is one group that murdered people even comparable to another that is trying to protect people?

Of course you're right and any Republican knows it, but unlike the book 1984, the printed proof of the past doesn't even need to be changed or destroyed. Stupid liberals won't bother to read about what really happened in the first place, therefore they'll only believe the revisionist tripe their leaders spout off. Besides ending slavery, I seem to remember that it was a lot of Republicans who helped the black people in the 60s too. But of course, it's us Republicans who are racist (sarcasm)

It just seems like he tries to raise the rhetoric to a new level at each stop. "To thunderous ovation..." I have to believe that this fishwrap site embellished that a bit, but you gotta wonder about those in attendance.

It's a real shame that Unicef keeps him on as a "goodwill ambassador". He seems to know very little about generating good will.

It's been downhill for Harry since he lost that dance gig with Shirley Temple to Mr. Bojangles. He just wasn't convincing.
