Iran hails Hamas victory

Iran has congratulated the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas for its election victory and praised voters for choosing "to continue the struggle and resistance against occupation".

Hamid Reza Asefi, the foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement on Thursday faxed to journalists:"The Islamic republic of Iran congratulates Hamas and all the Palestinian soldiers and the great Islamic people."

Iran and Hamas are allies and declared in December that they represented a "united front" against Israel. "The Palestinians have voted for the resistance and have shown their loyalty," Asefi said.

"The result of these elections will reinforce the unity of the Palestinian people in defending their rights. The massive participation of the Palestinians shows their will to continue the struggle and resistance against occupation."

Although Iran is a vocal supporter of Hamas - as well as the Palestinian resitance group Islamic Jihad and the Lebanese Shia movement Hizb Allah - the clerical regime denies allegations it finances these groups.

But on 15 December, Khaled Meshaal, the Hamas political chief said during a visit to the Iranian capital that his group would step up attacks against Israel if the Jewish state took military action against Iran over its disputed nuclear programme

"Just as Islamic Iran defends the rights of the Palestinians, we defend the rights of Islamic Iran. We are part of a united front against the enemies of Islam," Meshaal said during the visit.

"Each member of this front defends itself with its own means in its region. We carry the battle in Palestine. If Israel launches an attack against Iran, we will expand the battlefield in Palestine," he said.

"We are part of a united front, and if one member of this front is attacked it is our duty to support them," he added, also praising Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President, for his "courageous" anti-Israeli stance.

Since sweeping to power in a shock election win last June, Ahmadinejad has embarked on an all-out verbal assault against Israel.

He has labelled the Jewish state as a "tumour" that should be "wiped off the map" or moved as far away as Alaska, and has branded the Holocaust a "myth".

More and more it lools as if the end is near.

Israel is reborn
From the four corners of the world the Jews are going home.
Russia is arming Iran
Babylon (Iraq) was destroyed

So many Biblical predictions are happening (well Israel become a nation again before I war born) essentially it is easy to see how magnicifcant the Bible is playing out.

How many times do we have to defeat this axis before it'll stop? Didn't these guys all sidle up to the Nazis in WW2? This is such BS that we have to keep fighting the same war.

Bush endorsed Russia's plan to aid with Iran developing nuclear technology. This is disappointing as I would not trust Russia, one of Iran's business partners, with ensuring that they don't develop a nuclear weapon. Since Russia, under Putin, has turned more inward over the past three years, this is not a good development, IMHO.

"Just as Islamic Iran defends the rights of the Palestinians, we defend the rights of Islamic Iran. We are part of a united front against the enemies of Islam," Meshaal said during the visit.

Meshaal... Islam isn't failing to keep its word at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)! Islam is not going to be sent to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for maintaining a clandestine nuclear program that strongly resembles a nuclear weapons development program. Islam is not the Iranian government! Islam is not the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp! Islam is not the money that finances Hamas projects be they terrorist or otherwise.

Islam is a religion wholly separated from earthly materialism. The threats you perceive are earthly threats and target individuals, organizations and nations that commit violence in order to influence political destiny in their favor. It is by coincidence that your Muslim brothers, as individuals, members of organizations, or officials of state, find themselves the target of investigations into terrorist crimes. It is precisely because of their irresponsibility and repeated failures of leadership that they find themselves linked together in solidarity. These repeated failures of leadership are earthly failures and earthly failures always come with consequences. Islam has no enemies but incompetent officials do. If an incompetent official happens to be Muslim, so then they become enemies of peace and security. Indeed, the same nations that intend to hold Tehran responsible for its nuclear noncompliance at the IAEA protect freedom of religion and are therefore, friends of Islam.

Hamas’s democratic victory is an historic opportunity to exercise real leadership skills and develop tangible techniques of responsible governance. Looking for common cause with irresponsible governors in Iran and elsewhere will squander this opportunity. Make note Meshaal, opportunities this big are extremely rare.

I saw that movie recently. It wasn't planes, but nuclear missiles, sent by the man in the blue turban. We try to shoot it down with missile defenses, but some of the missiles get through and NY is destroyed.

This was supposed to happen in 1988, I think.

LOL! LOL! Yes, they said the exact same thing about the NAZI party in pre war Germany.

Worked out really well. - 6 million dead Jews. 100 million+ dead. - Lets try again, and with a party that openly commits acts of the mass murder of Jewish women and children, and this time throw nukes into the equation.

Naive assessment

Yes, they said the exact same thing about the NAZI party in pre war Germany.

I appreciate where you are coming from on this but my comment was based on a very simple concept that can be described with your analogy; before Hitler instigated WWII he had an historic opportunity not to instigate WWII.

No matter how clear our collective future appears to us, it has not yet come to pass. It’s not appeasement to point out the error in Hitlerian or Hamas-ian logic. You may consider it futile but I don’t. Although it appears we are all marching on the path to a massive war, there are still tangible choices at each point of contention. As much as we may wish people there had not voted for violence when they voted for Hamas, they did. This means opportunities have been lost and new ones have come up…

One way to look at my commentary might be by imagining what you might have said to a German in the lead up to WWII. Of course there is the obvious, "We are going to kill you and all of your neighbors if you don't stop Hitler yourself". My way would be like this, "You’ve been wrong in the past but before we are forced to kill you and all of your neighbors for your crimes against society, your orginization has an historic opportunity to renounce violence and govern responsibly." Does this version of my comment still smell like appeasement? FYI, it’s not.

This kind of sentiment is expected. With Sharon being out of the political scene, Israel is leaning more toward extreme right and Palestinians moving away from Mahmood Abbas to the far left, it sets the stage for war.
However, following the news on Iran's nuclear standoff; I think Ahmadinejad will benefit the most from any unrest. Europe's Jack Straw should stop wobbling and move quicker to put the cap on Iran's terrorist president in the UN Security Council. Islamic republic is the main state sponsoring terrorists and instigating unrest in the region. Also attention will be driven off of them.
