ON PEGGY NOONAN ON 4 PRESIDENTS AND A FUNERAL

by Mia T, 2.10.06

will preface this by saying that Peggy Noonan is not my cup of tea. Her writing leaves a cloyingly sweet aftertaste. (Her speaking, too.) Worse, it is too often metaphor in search of a thought.

That said, I thought her analysis of Coretta Scott King's funeral provided an interesting and coherent--if disputable--point of view.

That is, until I came to this jumbled mess: (Noonan is in blue.)

Amid all the happy bombast [bill clinton] was the one who pointed at the casket and said, "There's a woman in there." He talked about Mrs. King in good strong plain terms. Yes, he caused a quarter-second of awkwardness when he said of the beautiful Coretta that even at age 75 she still had the goods, but in moments of exuberance we all forget our own history.

ASIDE: Surely Ms. Noonan understands that clinton's mummy-redux moment wasn't an example of a momentary event-induced lapse but rather a slip, a disclosure, a demonstration in real time of this depicable misogynist's real opinion of women.

The real news was how the Clintons used the funeral to unveil how they will run in 2008: Together, side by side, with beautiful hairdos. I haven't seen them like this--both standing at the podium--since 1992, when they were new.

ASIDE: Superficial. And wrong.

What is happening here is not the clintons 'side by side,' but rather, the clintons conflated.

Having failed to snare the Nobel Peace Prize by ignoring terrorism, clinton has apparently decided to intensify his America-bashing on foreign soil, the method employed by Jimmy Carter to great (if somewhat belated) effect. (The Nobel committee, sufficiently mollified only after 24 years of the peanut president's America-bashing, awarded Carter his 1978 Peace Prize finally in 2002.)

Meanwhile, back in the Senate, the missus, the other half of the clinton construct, maintains her hawkish pose (though not without bird problems of another sort).

Yet another example of the clinton conflation ploy, (see SCHEMA PINOCCHIO: how the clintons are handling the hillary dud factor), this variant allows "clinton, the construct" to hold two mutually exclusive positions simultaneously, thereby enabling the missus to avoid in '08 the trap that repeatedly ensnared the ever 'nuanced' Kerry in '04.

Do you now understand how stupid the clintons think you are?

A CALL TO IMPEACH CLINTON IN ABSENTIA

REINVENTING HILLARY... AGAIN
(clinton machine dumps Geena Davis for Margaret Thatcher)
how the clintons are handling the hillary dud factor2
Mia T, 11.23.05

Miss hillary of the 'plantation' wouldn't do here. 'The First Black President? was providing a warm body if not soul.

And as for the 'beautiful hairdos,' they tell us something about the clintons that is quite different from the glamour suggested by Noonan. The precision cut is counterproductive after a certain age. It can only serve to make all the crags and sags more evident. And the incongruity is wiglike, artificial.

So the precision cut, rather than a glamour marker, says 'old and fake'... and ultimately, 'clueless.' Just like the clintons, themselves.

In the years since, after the health-care failure and the Whitewater scandals, the West Wing attitude toward the president's wife was a quiet and respectful "Get that woman off the podium!" Not anymore. All is new again. Mrs. Clinton has clearly been working on her public speaking, and attempted to use her hands as her husband uses his, now in an emphasizing arc, now resting on her chest. But his are large, long and elegant, and hers are puffed and grasping.

ASIDE: Missus clinton is a dud and no amount of money or training or spin will change that plain fact.

Everyone knows this--that is, everyone except Noonan.

And as for the utility of missus clinton's gesticulation training, check out the hands in my latest flash movies.

I am amazed that Noonan would romanticize clinton. Not even Esquire missed the hands and their connection to the phallic.

clinton's hands are grotesquely large, clawlike, threatening. They are not the elegant hands of, say, a surgeon or a pianist. They are the viselike hands of a rapist.

Yes, all of missus clinton's appendages are puffy and much too short even given her squat, low-center-of-gravity torso. But both clintons have grasping hands. They may be grasping for different things, but they are grasping.

Both Clintons spoke in the cadence and with the imagery of the Bible. Mrs. Clinton's first words, in which she referred to Mrs. King's brave decision to continue her husband's work after his murder, were steeped in religiosity. "As we are called, each of us must decide whether to answer that call by saying, 'Send me.'" She ended with, "The work of peace never ends. So we bid her earthly presence farewell. We wish her Godspeed on her homecoming. And we ask ourselves, 'Will we say, when the call comes, "Send me"?'"

Oh I think we will, Ms. Meanieface!

If you don't understand that Mrs. Clinton was rehearsing her 2008 announcement speech, then you are a child and must go home and have a nice cup of cocoa.

This is what is coming: I have had a blessed life. And like so many people I could choose, after all these years, a life of comfort. Watch it from the sidelines, tend to my own concerns, watch the garden grow. But our nation calls out. And if we are to be Americans we must meet the call. "Send me."

With Bill nodding beside her, his hands clasped prayerfully in front of him, nodding and working that jaw muscle he works when he wants you to notice, for just a second, how hard it is sometimes for him to contain his admiration.

God I love them.

Four Presidents and a Funeral
Peggy Noonan

ASIDE: Even here she doesn't quite get it. The clintons aren't merely analogizing. They are setting up false equivalences with heroic figures. It is one of their favorite methods of legacy inflation, second only to posthumous misappropriation.

And how much truth and how much facetiousness are in that last sentence, anyway?

Biography lends to death a new terror.--Oscar Wilde

Hypocrisy abounds in this Age of Clinton, a Postmodern Oz rife with constitutional deconstruction and semantic subversion, a virtual surreality polymarked by presidential alleles peccantly misplaced or, in the case of Jefferson posthumously misappropriated...

Mia T, THE OTHER NIXON

Yesterday, Daniel Patrick Moynihan died. Today, the clintons are arrogating his soul. Hardly surprising. In 1999, the clintons were not at all shy about seizing his still-warm senate seat.

One has merely to recall the Jefferson double-helix hoax to understand that posthumous misappropriation is, for the obvious reason, the clintons' preferred method of legacy inflation….

Standard-Issue clintonism

If misappropriation of Jefferson's alleles hinged on a broken line of descent, misappropriation of Moynihan's endorsement depends on a broken line of dissent. Like Sally Hemmings' progeny, Moynihan's later acquiescence is of dubious lineage

So true.

I'm about the post a new flashmovie about missus clinton's memoir. (part 2 of the inadvertent hillary-and-Jane-show disclosures) Hope to have it up later today. Will ping you.

Excellent, YY.

No 'bimbo eruptions' from dead women, so I can almost understand the fascination. It would certainly make missus clinton's life easier.

The perfect couple!!!--malia

Peggy Noonan, a good woman, has gradually and unfortunately become a narcissist of her own observations and words. She has come to like the sound of herself too much. May she soon rediscover the original Peggy N.--mtntop3

Peggy Noonan's excellent piece in yesterday's Wall Street Journal is really the story of the death of democracy. At its core it is the description of the human double helix gone terribly awry, of a denatured protein grotesquely twisted, of two mutant, tangled strands of DNA, the basest imaginable of base pairs linked permanently, as firmly as guanine to cytosine, bill inexorably to hillary and conversely, doing what they do best, and doing it relentlessly.

THE ALIENS

eggy Noonan's excellent piece in yesterday's Wall Street Journal is really the story of the death of democracy. Killing.
Killing insidiously.
Killing as they pose and pander and feel our pain.

My only complaint is with Peggy Noonan's title.
The Mad Boomer, doesn't begin to capture candidate clinton considered separately or even taken as the self-anointed "twofer," permanently conjoined at that cavity conspicuously empty except for ego, that place where brain and soul and guts and heart normally reside.

This is not to say that she -- that they -- are not both quite mad and of that self-indulgent, arrogantly, ignorantly solipsistic age sandwiched flatly between yesterday's innocence and tomorrow's insouciance. Rather, it is that their madness and their boomerism don't even begin to explain their noxious influence: The cloying, internally inconsistent clinton calculus. The unspoken clinton threats. They permeate the atmosphere like a coiling miasma, choking off all freedom.

Even in New York.
Especially in New York.

When she wrote "The New Colossus," Emma Lazarus hardly had in mind this pair of mutant, deadly, twisted aliens.

So forget Arkansas-Illinois carpetbaggery and standard issue muckraking. The clintons are aliens of quite another sort. They are extrinsic, not of this world. They are inhuman. They are dehumanizing.

You may recall that the first act of this story of two degenerates maintained by iterating idiots, farce of farce ad infinitum, was generated quite by accident by iterated AlGoreRhythm, who, it should be noted, is now himself the object of iterated calculation by said degenerates who want iteration 2004 all for themselves.

And thus the odd bit of bloody Gore in Act II: The ugly sight of a corrupt, bottom-heavy hillary self-impaled on the horns of a Treason-Dilemma- masquerading-as-a-Third-Term-Dilemma-masquerading-as-a-Senate-stampede, for example, or bill's recent unsolicited, underwhelming Times interview on the Gore candidacy.

Act I was called "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover." Ostensibly the tale of the wife of a bloodthirsty crime boss who finds romance with a bland bookseller between courses at her husband's restaurant, it was in fact the Thyestean and moveable -- yet unmoving -- feast of hillary clinton at her husband's sham restitution. (Note the reciprocity. The sham restitution in Act II is all hillary's.)

Food, color coding, sex, murder, torture and cannibalism were the exotic (if mostly horizontal) fare in this beautifully filmed but brutally uncompromising modern memoir which passed as ancient fable about nouveau riche rapacity.

Not for the faint at heart, Purple Hearts or queazy stomachs, this depiction of the gross debasement of America was heavily peppered with irony and dark humor throughout.

Although she baked no cookies, didn't do illicit land or cattle deals and stood by no man, hillary clinton starred in the triple role of the Cook, the Thief and his Wife. Her lover was played at once vaporously and in workmanlike fashion by the ghost of Eleanor Roosevelt, with Janet Reno, between her stints rendering intermittent injustice for the Husband, as the reliable stand-in. Sidney Blumenthal was the stand-in for the Cook and Craig Livingstone the stand-in for the Thief. The last-minute addition of Christopher Hitchens as the snitch was a stroke of absolute genius notwithstanding its cerebral accident, its predictable-if-perfect pitch (or its facile alliteration).

Although Act I had no rating, the new clinton soccer-mom directive will require a photo ID for any viewer without independent proof of illegal alien DNC <-> DNA sequencing.

In Act II, rabid anti-clinton voters, roughly 33% of the U.S. populace according to as-yet-unpodded pollsters, become increasingly aware that they are disappearing in droves and being replaced by alien pod replicas that have their physical attributes but lack all anti-clinton affect.

If Act I was a thinly veiled allegory about naked clintonism, then Act II is a parable about the plan for world domination by the Establishment, aged hippies in pinstripes all, with their infantile, solipsistic world view amazingly untouched by time.

We really do share the same DNA.

Another Home Run.

Noonan spends way too much time in front of a mirror already and her every other spare minute angling to reflect the glow she imagines eminating from other dullards' celebrity.

She would have been entirely the wrong kind of speech writer for him. He is blunt and forceful. She is too wispy and allegorical.

Ronald Reagan would've disagreed.

I agree with RR. There is a place for Peggy. Dubya, for all his tough Texas talk, loves a beautifully turned phrase. His top speechwriter--his name escapes me-- is sometimes rather Noonanesque: He writes beautiful stuff.

That's not blunt. It's but a statement of the obvious.

If it consoles you, though, neither has either Cli'toon, nor Noonan, nor Al-Fredo Gore-leone, ever understood Mia.

And nor has John McCain.

Nor any other congenital dullard.

But rather than engaging in ad hominem, why don't you defend Noonan and refute my argument with facts?

Should Andy J. respond as intelligently and cogently as Peggy's critics? ---

And FWIW, Peggy's been nothing but a simpering hack, for many long years now. I used to get terrible flack, when I said that here, but perhaps, now, more people will wake up and she her for who and what she is; not what they want her to be. - nopardons

Noonan!!! Shut the F Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Doc Savage

I'd be willing to call her hotter than hell, if she'd just go there. - kylaka

Get harpu on this thread you all would be overwhelmed with excitement!

An aside: Not one of you, it is quite obvious, understood at all what Peggy N. was saying in this column.

Of course! Miss Noonan should devote her time to ganging up on an innocent 18 yr old girl as you and the other shrews did when LauraLee B. first arrived here.
Peggy Noonan is the polar opposite of you and your ilk.

I saw the column as bifurcated. I thought her argument was interesting and coherent--if disputable--up to a point.

When she started waxing romantic about a documented abuser of women, she lost me, jla.

I would love to hear your take on the essay. Ignore what others have said. Tell us what jla thinks. :)

Tell us what jla thinks

Give me a second or two, I'm putting in a Natalie MacMaster CD ---

...ahh yes, one of my favorites from the fiddlin' virtuosa... Tullochgorum.

Now, what was your question? Oh yes! The Peggy Noonan column:

Our Founders, especially Thomas J, believed vehemently in freedom of expression.
Yes, the practice of such may be at times impolite, out of place, or downright rude. Yet, we have here, in the United States, the solemn right, not a privilege, to do just that.
This is what PN was exultant over. She made it very clear that she did not think the remarks made by the Clinton-duo, Jimmah C., and the most reverend Lowery were to her taste, yet she is ecstatic that she lives in a country where these folks, for voicing dissenting opinions and acting rudely, aren't carried off and shot.

PN referring to Bill Clinton as "the master" is not a term of endearment. (Let's not forget that PN wrote the book The Case Against Hillary Clinton).

Peggy Noonan loves this country the same way RR did, and as I, and a lot of others do.
We sleep well at night, not worrying that some evil Clinton bogeyman lies under the bed.
We sleep sounding, and dream sweet dreams. We do so because we believe in our Founders, we believe in America, and most importantly, we believe in God.

This column by Peggy Noonan was an hymn to America!.

"So what? This was the authentic sound of a vibrant democracy doing its thing. It was the exact opposite of the frightened and prissy attitude that if you draw a picture I don't like, I'll have to kill you." --- Peggy Noonan

"By God, she sounds just like Jefferson!"

from MiaT's "My Rational"

THE VIRTUAL HILLARY RATIONALE : My initial objective was to document, expose and indict the clintons with their own words and deeds.

My first character was virtual hillary.

I deliberately made virtual hillary robotic to capture missus clinton's preprogrammed content and flat affect.

My goal was also to capture missus clinton's fraudulence and profound psychological dysfunction, especially her repressed rage.

I do this contrapuntally, that is to say, by sequencing her phony, cloying speeches, e.g., "I could hardly breathe...." or "There's nothing more wonderful than making dreams come true...." with her rageful outbursts, e.g., "I am sick and tired..." or "have a right." Good examples of this technique can be found in the following two pieces below.

This technique may cause clinton's speech to sound like hyperbole, but in my view it is not. It is missus clinton's dysfunction and fraudulence reduced to their essence.

Virtual hillary's words, i.e., hillary clinton words, sound like hyperbole also because hillary clinton makes amazingly stupid statements, statements that border on the surreal.

A recent example: "I keep in my desk drawer a tiny little camera that you can swallow in order to see what is inside you," an amazingly stupid statement coming from someone so infamously small, fraudulent and repressed.

This statement provided not only wonderful audio, but also the context in which to invert (x-ray-ize) the images to see what is actually inside this small, fraudulent and repressed woman.

A camera?!!???

First of all, it against FR's posting rules, to bring old flame wars/hurts/whatever, to other threads.

Secondly, it is also against FR's posting rules, to initiate a flame war.

Thirdly, I'm not falling for the bait, dear.LOL

Fourthly, for the edification, of those who may be unaware of the poster and her posting history here, I'll explain just why your post is not only patently ridiculous, but also specious.

Hmmmmmmm...let's see, the very first thread LLB ever posted, was a VANITY THREAD posted to NEWS, wherein she asked how anyone could live outside of New York City ( but implying MANHAATAN, which is nuts, since she, herself, lives in QUEENS; supposedly )could make a living, since there were no lawyers, doctors, brokers, or bankers out there in the hinterlands.

She then posted several other vanity threads, ALL POSTED TO NEWS, dealing with absurd, really stupid questions, that any 10 year old would know were silly.

Peggy Noonan is an OLD, bitter, hack, whose style is that of a severely arrested development Catholic school girl. She writes wispy confections, garbled metaphors, and blindingly objectionable slurs about President Bush. At almost sixty, it's long past time that Peggy finally grew up.

Sorry for the belated reply. Just awoke and noticed your post. (As I told you, I've been nursing the flu.)

This is beautiful, jla. And it captures the essence of the compelling part of the Noonan piece.

This part of her essay is precisely the part that I was talking about when I wrote: "I thought her analysis of Coretta Scott King's funeral provided an interesting and coherent--if disputable--point of view." If I made an error here, it is that I understated just how compelling this part of the essay is. Thanks for not allowing that understatement to stand.

I also said this compelling part was "disputable." It is disputable because there is a natural tension between freedom and responsibility, between what is a right and what is right; it is disputable because people were practicing the limits of freedom of expression, often for opportunistic reasons, at the expense of honoring the dead at another family's funeral.

So the part of the essay you discuss so beautifully is indeed compelling; but it is also disputable.

The other part of the essay, the unfathomable part, is the part in which Peggy waxes poetic about a pair of serial abusers of women, a pair of serial abusers of power. That is the part that my essay addresses.

I do have a lingering fear that, if that dark, dark day should one day arrive that 'The Beast' becomes 'First Thug', she will be able to find out (as with the FBI files) who we all are, all of us who have been poking at her and Billy Jeff over the years. We'll be off to re-education camps...... or worse.

Well, considering the fact that Jefferson was an elitist snob shopaholic, who reveled in turning up at his own dinner parties, dressed in a ratty old bathrobe, in a sate of dishabille, treating his embarrassed guest THE finest food and French wines, that he could NOT afford, but which he used to IMPRESS those he looked down his long, thin, aristo nose on, perhaps he would have also loved "the master" Billy BJ. Yet,he most assuredly wrote and spoke on a vastly higher plan than she.

Or, did you mean the Thomas Jefferson, who engaged a professional dirt digger, teller of tale tales, mud slinger pamphleteer, who wrote lies about his political rivals. Unfortunately for Tom, this self same person, angry as a wet hen, for not getting what he expected, turned the tables on Jefferson...slinging mud all over Tom, by spreading the lie about him and Sally Hemmings, which far too many people, down to today, still believe; erroneously.
