NBC's Gregory Eats Crow

NBC White House correspondent David Gregory ate a little crow Sunday on this "Meet The Press," apologizing for his arrogant behavior during White House press briefings dealing with the shooting of a hunting companion by Vice President Cheney.

Reacting to the storm of criticism leveled by the public at the Washington press corps for complaining that they were not told immediately about the incident, leaving the job of reporting it to a small-town Texas newspaper, Gregory apologized for his boorish behavior.

"I think I made a mistake,” he told host Tim Russert. "I think it was inappropriate for me to lose my cool with the press secretary representing the vice president. I don’t think it was professional of me. I was frustrated, I said what I said, but I think that you should never speak that way, as my wife reminded me, number one. And number two, I think it created a diversion from some of the serious questions in the story, so I regret that. I was wrong, and I apologize.”

But Gregory quickly reverted to type complaining that another guest, Mary Matalin, "and others in the White House have been eager to stoke this as a false debate between the vice president and the White House press corps, attempting to cast this as the White House press corps is a ping-pong in the culture wars.”

Then, in a comment that once again revealed how remote the Washington media has become from the American people, he made the astounding comment that "No matter how you feel about the White House press corps -— and we’re worthy of criticism, and we can take our lumps —- this is about how the vice president chooses to communicate to the American people. We are a proxy for the American people. Whether you have faith in us or not, and we do make mistakes, we are still a proxy. This is about how the vice president chooses to communicate to the public. My view is not that I should have been informed or others should have been informed. It’s not about that. It’s a question of, "Does the vice president have a responsibility to the American people to inform them of his public and private activities?”

I'd love to see them call a press conference, walk out, laugh, and then just walk off. ;)

It's like the movie Groundhog Day.
The press will wake up tomorrow, be reminded that Whittington STILL isn't dead, and start the rehashing all over again.

Proxy this, David Gregory!

This is paraphrased newspeak for:"We are the self anointed elite ministers of propaganda. Thus, we are the gatekeepers, so VP Cheney should always use us to communicate to the American Sheeple."

It looks as if Gregory and his ilk are trying to use the word "proxy" to disguise their whiny arrogance. It'll only dig their holes deeper, but hey why should we try and stop them?

I'll have to admit that I did not think she slapped em that hard. On the other hand, their response was pretty lame. They looked like they had no idea what to say. They kept looking at each other hoping the other would say something.

Do these retards actually think we're going to believe that Cheney was attempting to cover this up? Because if he wasn't--and there's not an ounce of evidence that he was--the ONLY possible story here is that he DELAYED talking to the Washington press--NOT that he was keeping a shooting secret, NOT that he didn't talk, but that he didn't talk to hairboy.

>>We are a proxy for the American people.

David Gregory, you are not my proxy, and never will be. You are an arrogant loudmouth, at best, and I hope you read this thread and perhaps gain a small measure of humility.

And I toned "loudmouth" down considerably.

There isn't an estate with a bigger head in all the word, than that of the fourth estate.

Nobody voted them into do a damned thing. The press corp at the White House is there by the grace of the sitting President.

If the President wanted to he could bypass them for four years.

He could direct his press secretary to issue press releases to AP and other news outlets. He could then arrange to have local media people conduct interviews every few days, as he passed through their region.

I'm sick of the White House press corp. It's about time someone figuratively slapped them upside the head.

You either respect the President and his staff, or find a new line of work.

The Corpus Christi (pop. 277,454) Caller-Times launched an internet edition in 1995, and in 1997 the Scripps-Howard group assumed ownership from Harte-Hanks. In 1999 the Caller-Times won fifty national, state, and regional awards. It had a daily circulation of 66,000 and a Sunday circulation of 88,000. [most recent circulation figures I found with a quick search].

The Caller-Times is hardly a stand alone, unaffiliated, "local", small-town newspaper. It is part of the Scripps Howard News Service:

Scripps Howard News Service (SHNS) is the nation's second largest supplementary news service. An experienced Washington staff monitors all phases of government and strategically placed photographers cover national and international news reports. The wire service also offers excellent topical, as well as stock, illustrations for editorial use.

As well, Scripps Networks brands include HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living and Great American Country. HGTV reaches about 85 million U.S. television households and Food Network can be seen in about 87 million households. Scripps Networks programming can be seen in 86 countries. Scripps Howard News Service is the exclusive provider of newspaper content for these popular lifestyle networks.

"Does the vice president have a responsibility to the American people to inform them of his public and private activities?”

Mr. Gregory, where was this concern when Al Gore was holding fishy fundraisers with monks? Wouldn't you consider illegal fundraising more important than a hunting accident? Our proxies had to be led kicking and screaming to cover a bare minimum of that story. So, Mr. Gregory, please spare us the b.s. about you being a proxy for us. It only makes you look even more petulant and silly than you already are.

"NBC's Gregory Eats Crow Sh*t"

I can't tell you how wonderful it is that this pompous, arrogant, gasbag, David "Big Foot" Gregory, has finally been subjected to a large portion of public humiliation. Couldn't happen to a bigger $hithead.
