NBC's Gregory Eats Crow

NBC White House correspondent David Gregory ate a little crow Sunday on this "Meet The Press," apologizing for his arrogant behavior during White House press briefings dealing with the shooting of a hunting companion by Vice President Cheney.

Reacting to the storm of criticism leveled by the public at the Washington press corps for complaining that they were not told immediately about the incident, leaving the job of reporting it to a small-town Texas newspaper, Gregory apologized for his boorish behavior.

"I think I made a mistake,” he told host Tim Russert. "I think it was inappropriate for me to lose my cool with the press secretary representing the vice president. I don’t think it was professional of me. I was frustrated, I said what I said, but I think that you should never speak that way, as my wife reminded me, number one. And number two, I think it created a diversion from some of the serious questions in the story, so I regret that. I was wrong, and I apologize.”

But Gregory quickly reverted to type complaining that another guest, Mary Matalin, "and others in the White House have been eager to stoke this as a false debate between the vice president and the White House press corps, attempting to cast this as the White House press corps is a ping-pong in the culture wars.”

Then, in a comment that once again revealed how remote the Washington media has become from the American people, he made the astounding comment that "No matter how you feel about the White House press corps -— and we’re worthy of criticism, and we can take our lumps —- this is about how the vice president chooses to communicate to the American people. We are a proxy for the American people. Whether you have faith in us or not, and we do make mistakes, we are still a proxy. This is about how the vice president chooses to communicate to the public. My view is not that I should have been informed or others should have been informed. It’s not about that. It’s a question of, "Does the vice president have a responsibility to the American people to inform them of his public and private activities?”

Poor little guy, he's pouring salt into his own wounds. The public understands what happened. They know that Harry is OK and now they just want this to go away.

What does the media not understand about IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!?!

Hard as the MSM trys, they can't get the American public to jump on their band wagon. LOL!

Given the title I thought that Sheryl Crow was somehow involved, now that she is sans Armstrong. :^)

Mary Matalin's comment about David's 4-day Jihad against the VEEP was wonderful; I loved it!!! Couple that with Simpson's statement on Fox today, that all you get from the white house press is conspriacy, crap and confusion, and I score today a 4-star day against old media. What a bunch of pigs they are, and they are finally being taken to task for it.

I liked Matalin's point about distinguishing between Cheney's obligations to the American public vs. the DC press corps, who ostensibly act on behalf of the former.

Dowd was hilarious, playing the role of the elitist twit to absolute perfection. It appeared as though she were talking through clenched teeth, barely moving her lips, and as though she had something painful stuck up her butt.

Your tagline reminds me: How long was it between the time that Chappaquiddick Ted killed Mary Jo and the time that he notified the press?

Personally, I thought choosing the local newspaper was reaching out to the American people. The White House Press Corps certainly doesn't represent us.

Definitely agree, Gregory's WH press pass should be revoked. Truly unprofessional behavior.

She was probably drunk off her ass.

Yes, he was defiant but I have to think that he looked like an idiot to many people watching his performance. Paul Gigot and Mary Matalin got in some pretty good licks when they questioned the priorities of the White House press corps and the fact that Cheney was more concerned about the well-being of a friend instead of the immediate needs of the press corps.

Maureen Dowd looks like she is five years away from resembling Helen Thomas. She looked bloated in the face, the corners of her mouth down turned and a bitter b*tch to the core. Yikes.

Did anyone notice the smile on Gregory face when Maureen tried to land some blows on Cheney but went way over the top. He is dumb enough to think she was scoring points. He is so tone death. I am sure he will act the idiot again. Probably by tomorrow.

He should be banned from the White House for his unruly behavior.

Keep him around. He serves a vital purpose. He makes the press look bad.

Gregory's wife is Beth Wilkinson, an executive vice president and the general counsel of Fannie Mae. Let's see Gregory investigate and report on all of the unethical/illegal behavior at Fannie Mae over the years, including activities by Clinton's buddy Franklin Raines. To what extent, if any, is his attorney wife involved in such misconduct?

"On December 21, 2004, Raines accepted what he called "early retirement" from his position as CEO as U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigators continued to investigate alleged accounting irregularities that may force Fannie Mae to restate some $9 billion in earnings."

Gregory takes one step to clean himself up, then wet his pants in public again.

So I can surmise he's sorry he got caught and held to account, but not really, truly sorry he spoke so foolishly.

" ... you should never speak that way, as my wife reminded me ... " --
There's a saying: Smart wife, better life. Sounds like Gregory's got one good thing going for him.

F@cking noble bastards! I never elected or chose them. They don't represent me and they certainly don't represent my views. If I have questions of my elected officials, I'll ask them myself, through established, respected channels.

If it were up to me, I would see most of them strung up by the neck until dead. The remainder I would put to work at hard labor.

And that's just my thoughts on a good day.
