A FRIEND of mine took his daughter to visit the famous City Lights in San Francisco, explaining that this store is important because years ago it sold books no other store would - even, perhaps especially, books whose ideas many people found offensive. So, though my friend is no Ward Churchill fan, he didn't really mind the prominent display of books by the guy who famously called 9/11 victims "little Eichmanns."
But it did occur to him that perhaps the long-delayed English translation of Oriana Fallaci's new book, "The Force of Reason," might finally be available, and that, because Fallaci's militant stance against Islamic militants offends so many people a store committed to selling banned books would be the perfect place to buy it. So he asked a clerk if the new Fallaci book was in yet.
"No," snapped the clerk. "We don't carry books by fascists."
Just savor the absurd details of this for a minute. City Lights has a long and proud history of supporting banned authors - owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti was indicted (and acquitted) for obscenity in 1957 for selling Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and a photo in the store's main room shows Ferlinghetti proudly posing next to a sign reading, "BANNED BOOKS." City Lights also has been featured in the ACLU's annual Banned Books Week events.

A modern college education is largely four years of partying interspersed with periods of half-baked liberal socialist and communist indoctrination followed by about 10 years of wasted life while the former student attempts to shed the bullshirt.
Todays liberals are the real fascists. And probably not all that bright. Calling things "fascist" by reflex is a good way to not have to think about them. I despise liberalism.
This reminds me of seeing two different cars this week with a sticker calling bush an "American Terrorist. The drivers of both cars were either in their late teens or 20's. I am not very that much older than they are. I could imagine some of the music they listen to. It is really sad to see people believing that tripe, especially when there is so much information to counter it. I wonder if these same idiots would hail Castro has a great humanitarian.
Searched koran and quran and got nothing on their site. Maybe they keep it filed under "holy" .... yuk.

Do you include science and engineering in that? If you go get a degree in, for instance, chemical engineering, you'll probably spend the 10 years after college making lots of money.

To people like this a working definition of "fascist" would be anyone they don't like or agree with.
This is the kind of hypocrisy that is typical of the far left.
There is nothing surprising about this story at all except that the author was apparently surprised.

Actually, I was asking whether you included engineering in that. I wasn't sure. It really annoys me when people don't differentiate between worthless programs such as womens' studies and useful pursuits such as mechanical engineering.
In my ideal world I would keep the math based programs and eliminate most of the touchy-feely stuff.
My ideal university would have a calculus requirement in the Freshman year.
I'm savoring as fast as I can.
That's interesting. I've often wondered how people with degrees in feminist studies, black studies, or other "oppression studies" can make a living.
