Well, now it will be a criminal offense.
I think this is long overdue. As long as the state is supplying food, it should be of decent quality. I think the coke machines amount to selling out the health of the kids for the benefit of the educrats.
"I wonder if kids can bring their own soda, chips, candy, Twinkies, etc. from
home in their little lunch boxes?"
IIRC, Dr. Cooper (the one with the big aerobics center in Dallas) said that
when these prohibitions are enacted, about all they do is enrich some
smart entrepreneurial kids who supply the Twinkies (etc.) to their fellow
students at a nice markup.
I think that's why Cooper was working with some company (Pepsico?) to
make snacks that are healthier, but not so devoid of taste/crunch
so kids might make the choice to eat the healthier choices...not be
coerced as in this case.
It would be interesting to have the SEC find out who in the Illinois state
guvmint shorted the stocks of the companies making the now-banned junk foods...
I guess I dont understand what the problem with this is. Kids are not adults. Its bad enough they have so few educational choices in this society, and that they have to attend poorly run public institutions. Now when the schools finally begin to swing back in the dircetion of common sense (no more coke and snickers for lunch) that you would if you were feeding your own kids at home, people complain?
Whats the problem?
I don't think a 10 year old has the will power to not fill up on candy when given the choice. I found my 11 year old stepson was spending the full amount of his lunch money on ice cream and M&Ms. Turns out all his friends were too. Thank goodness we had a teacher that cared enough to call us to let us know what was going on. We were forced to go back to brown bagging lunch for him. He got a bag of M&Ms along with his sandwich and a peice of fruit. We noticed a happier more energetic kid almost immediately.
This is a classic case of corporations taking advantage of young people, and they do it where they know parents are not there to stop them. Heck, when I was a kid in Catholic school back in the 70's, if I tried spending my milk money on an ice cream sandwich, Sister Ann was wrenching my ear and calling my mother on the phone. A Pepsi machine in school? That couldn't even be imagined back then. We used to have the U.S Dental Assoc. come in and give us classes on how to brush our teeth correctly and to stay away from sweets. Remember the Cavity Creep? Too bad teachers don't care or aren't allowed to care enough for our kids these days.
If my son is acting irresposible in ANY way I would like to know, whether he's playing with matches or eating Snickers bars for lunch everyday. Having teachers and schools that care enough for your kids' well being to step in and say "enough" is welcome in my book. I would hope my child is staying with a "nanny" rather than running around unchecked and doing the stupid things that kids do without an adult there to steer them in the right direction.
It is a UN initiative. The CFRs for the grant monies have ownership clauses to everything the grant monies touch. There is also a FOIA document that is signed upon applying for the monies. The schools get audited and that data goes into a global database.
They closed the cafeteria? They do consider nachos a serving from the bread/cereal group, the cheese topping is a serving of dairy, ketchup is considered a food group also (luckily not on the nachos)...no, I am not making this up. I was a teacher before motherhood...
I'm suprised they put it in schools anyway. The closest thing we had was chocolate milk, peanut butter cookies and jello.
I used to pack a small bag of chips, or twinkies, in my kids lunches when they were in school. I'll bet if a parent does that now, they will be arrested.
"But, blind students are required to take driver training courses in order to graduate."
In the same vein, could someone explain to me why drive-up ATMs have Braille posted on the numeric pads? Nobody at my local bank can tell me why.
It already pisses me off that I have to respond to pre-transaction questions as to what language I want to conduct this in...but Braille?
Well, my problem with this is, it was the liberals in my state who put the vending machines in there in the first place. We, conservatives, didn't want the advertising or the junk food for kids to access anytime they wanted.
They wanted to garner profits when the public refused to raise taxes for the schools yet again. Now they blame it on the parents, and claim the side of opposition, when that was our side before they put the machines in. Now that they are there, they will want to make up for any revenue they lose by taking them out.
That damn Hitlery started this with "It takes a village to raise a child." I never did like that slogan. I didn't need no village to raise MY child.
These coalition are verging on "shades of old Germany."
I have heard (here on FR, for one)that blind folks will ride in the back seat on the driver's side and use the ATM that way.
No revenue streams left behind act....
It already pisses me off that I have to respond to pre-transaction questions as to what language I want to conduct this in...but Braille?"
Three reasons:
1. Ever see the cars driving around with the white cane tapping in front?
2. A taxi can pull up and the passenger can use the machine.
3. People also walk up to ATMs to use them.
BTW, #1 was facetious.
Thanks fer the' ping. 8^D
Thanks for the ping!
