This is an open thread for Illinois Freepers to talk about the GOP Primary Election today. Can Judy Baar Topinka be stopped?!?!?

Stay tuned!

Okay, it's the moment of truth!

Can Judy Baar be beaten today?

Will enough voters pull the lever for Oberweis to stop the madness?

Will Bill Brady put Judy Baar Topinka on the ticket by bleeding enough Conservative support from Jim Oberweis to make it happen? Will Bill Brady defy history, logic, the polls, and state demographics and actually produce this invisible avalanche of last-minute, overwhelming support to leapfrog three primary opponents in the closing days? Will the combined votes of Brady and Oberweis be more than Topinka anyway?

If Oberweis loses, will he stop running after three unsuccessful tries? Is his ambition/ego too big to quit running?

If Brady succeeds in doing what it look like he'll do and put Topinka on the ticket, will his supporters feel any regret? Will Bill Brady stop his own ambitions if he cripples the Illinois Conservative movement by putting Topinka on the ballot? Or will he try and use this race as a stepping stone (a la Oberweis) for the 2008 Senate race, in the hopes that everyone will instantly forgive him for burying any chance of Conservative progress in Illinois?

Will we ever hear from Ron Gidwitz again?

If Oberweis flops, will his supporters finally admit him to be unelectable?

If Brady flops, will his supporters finally admit he's done more harm than good in this race, and that the mythical/invisible 30% support he's been trying to sell everybody on (no, it's really there, honest!) was a load of crap engineered by his campaign to make him look like a contender whan he wasn't?

More than anything else, can the IL GOP survive a Judy Baar Topinka ticket in 2008? Is there any hope of progress for the Conservative movement in Illinois if she wins the Governorship?

Let 'er rip, Illinois Freepers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I cast my vote for Jim Oberweis and Sandy Wegman today.

I encourage all others to do the same!

From what I know and have read of Jim Oberweis, it seems as though he'd make a good Governor. Maybe some other Freepers out there beg to differ.

But I think he needs to start out in Congress. I'm not sure what district he lives in but it seems as though he could easily self-finance a race for the House.

In Congress, he can gain additional name ID (although the Oberweis name is well known now) and expertise in the public sector.

Oberweis lives in Denny Hastert's district. I could see him running to replace Hastert when he retires.

I couldn't hold my nose and mark the ballot at the same time.
so i declared nonpartisan and only voted against a local referendum.

That's exactly what I was worried about. Many of the unions endorsed Judy Baar Topinka in their frustration with Blagojevich. The crossover vote may cinch her victory.

Even if she gets the nomination she won't beat Blagoivich.

We are going to suffer the Ryan legacy for a long time. I'll never forget him not signing the pro-life bill after he campaigned he would.

Back to the present: The IL. GOP needs a complete flushing out of the old guard. It's going to take a while.

You're right. I was surfing thru some on-line newspapers in Illinois and it sounds like turn-out is down in the southern part of the state.

Who do you think it hurts more? I'm inclined to say it hurts Oberweis.

If I'm correct, Topinka will do fine in the collar counties and Brady is from northern Illinois where he has his base of support.

up here in Peoria, the snow stopped and the warm temps.melted snow off of cars.

So turnout shouldn't suffer around here anyway.

I disagree. Pretty much every souce I hear says that she will ultimately win the Governor's race pretty easily if she's on the ticket.

Blago's approval is 30% and sometimes below. The unions and Daley machine are on board with Judy.

Actually, my perception has been that Brady's been strongest to the south, because of the support of certain grassroots organizers.

For starters, Blago appointed a Black Muslim on his hate crime commission. This appointee blamed homosexuals & Hollywood Jews for the problems in Iraq. Several Jews on the board resigned. Blago is standing by his pick. He favors Blacks over Jews.

He has lots of people support from the rank-and-file Democrats in the city. But the Daley machine is PISSED, and that's what matters if you want to win. Even Dick Mell isn't supporting him. Remember, the Daley machine has been fine helping Republicans before to fit their needs (George Ryan). They'll be fine with a Judy Baar Topinka Governorship for four years.

Folks,

I'd like to make this thread readily available this evening for updates, et al, and easily accessible.

How do I get this thread put on the sidebar or something so that it's easy to locate for IL Freepers?

It is an election thread, after all....

Oberweis is a total buffoon. He would be a disaster for this state.

I voted Brady and my second choice was Gidwitz my third Tompnka. I'd NEVER vote for Oberweis. I met him during one of his many runs for statewide office (runs he ALWAYS lost) several times and he is vacant of any sense of political ability. He seems to be saying "Hey, I'm really, really rich. Elect me to something... ANYTHING!"

We will have a Topinka vs. Blago fight in the general. Blago will beat Tonpinka and conservatives will be in the wilderness for at least 5 years.

But maybe that is a good thing as we NEED to be RID of every last "Lyin Ryan" Illinois Republican before the Illinois GOP can rebuild enough to have ANY legitimacy whatsoever.

We must cut our losses to four years, and purge her from the party for good.

She would be a DISASTEROUS Governor, and the end of the IL Conservative movement.

Maybe it's all that ice cream freezing yer brain?

A vote for Obie is a vote for a fool.

Did you hear how he proposed that the three conservative candidates settle who should face Topinka who is decidedly NOT a conservative candidate?

He said they should draw straws.

Yep. That's RIGHT, folks. This nut ball proposed a kids game to settle who would become GOVERNOR of a STATE!!! This guy is an idiot void of any sense of politics.

He proposed this as a SERIOUS idea. DRAW STRAWS!

He is a nitwit.
