Report: Russia Had Sources in U.S. Command

WASHINGTON - The Russian government had sources inside the American military command as it planned and executed the invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to Iraqi documents released as part of a Pentagon report.

The Russians passed information to Saddam Hussein on U.S. troop movements and plans during the opening days of the war, according to the report Friday.

The unclassified report does not assess the value of the information or provide details beyond citing two captured Iraqi documents that say the Russians collected information from sources "inside the American Central Command" and that battlefield intelligence was provided to Saddam through the Russian ambassador in Baghdad.

A classified version of the Pentagon report, titled "Iraqi Perspectives Project," is not being made public.

In Moscow, a duty officer with Russia's Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the report late Friday evening. No one answered the phones at the Defense Ministry.

"Sources or just good spying and intelligence gathering?"

Please explain the difference. I'm not following your meaning.

"Is anyone surprized at this?? I'm not."

I am certainly not because I believe the Russians have deeply penetrated many different aspects of our society including the military, and have been doing so without significant interruption for 70 years or so.

In direct answer to your question however, I'm sure that many people are surprised at this.

"Sources in the military command? Roadapples!!
If there was info sent to Russians, it came from members of Congress, their staff or planted political appointments."

On what do you base your opinion that the Russians could not have sources in our military command?

"This is a really big story that will gather a lot of attention. It has elements to it which will force the MSM to cover the story---- Russian spies, military intelligence, etc."

MSN response: "Yawn, story, what story? How does this information contribute to the destruction of American society? If it does not, what is its usefulness?"

"I have not ever believed, not for a minute, that the Russians, at the political leadership level, have abandoned their long-range goal of achieving, by whatever means possible, the diminution of American influence in geo-politics to the point of insignificance. They, like the Chinese, look at the realm of geopolitics with a lon-range perspective, and a temporary alliance of convenience between Russia and China, for the single purpose of defeating the U. S. A., is to be expected."

Well spoken.

"I think its time the Chechens"learned" how to enrich uranium/plutonium. Kinda like how the Iranians "learned" how to with russian/chinese help. The US is getting sick of russian and chinese agression. They will be the cause of a nuclear war this century. I have no doubt."

This will not happen. Quite aside from any discussion of the merits of the strategy (which I don't find too appealing)---US agents cannot operate inside Russia, in my opinion. Anyway, I believe the Russians have pretty thorough penetration of the Chechnyans.

"How is it a clown like me and a dedicated volunteer linguist can find this stuff and the media can't?"

AP serves the Russians, as does the rest of the MSM. They see their job as to hide information like this---not bring it to light.

"Who is the traitor that sold information to Russia. This person have resulted in deaths of our soldiers. He or she should be tried and sentenced to death!"

Agreed, but I do not believe we know who he is. Such information would not generally be included---even in an internal GRU report.

Again, I'm not surprized that the Russians are acting....well.....Russian. If you lay down with dogs, you're bound to get fleas...

This is why the Russians are not to be trusted with anything important; like nuclear fuel production for Iran, or the International Space Station, or any other damned thing that they get their hands on.

Never mind that they are still basically incompetent...

I've seen them out on the street (No, I do NOT go to the Russian-themed clubs here, TRUST ME on that one) and the girls AREN'T very young, that's why I wonder. Even the better looking ones here average about 35 years old I would guess (their clientele is often older).

But your point is well-taken.

That's pretty dang sad, isn't it? Wow, mid-30s and on the streets of South Korea. Regardless of what "training" they've been to or not been to, I'd hazard a guess and say they'd sell anyone out for any amount of money.

Oh, this is why we had such a hard time with the invasion of Iraq. And I thought it was just bad post-invasion planning.

Now I'm rethinking things -- if they've had it that rough, they probably just LOOK like they're in their mid-30s and are actually 19.
