Who served in the Coast Guard? What are the Pros and Cons? What rate were you?

Have any of you served in the Coast Guard? How was it? What did you enjoy most? What did you get out of it? and finally.....were any of you boatswain mates?

Son is looking in to going in...just want some info.

I was not in the CG but my Rate Runs about $59.99 a day cleaning deposit not included......

If he's interested in a career in shipping, like on the Great Lakes, I'd say the Coast Guard would be a good place to start. I knew several ex Coasties who worked for the steamship lines and got some good AB training.

CG units are generally small and provide a lot of training and cross training plus small units provide great opportunities to show initiative and leadership and there is great camaraderie.

He probably served with my Coast Guard uncle. He did the same thing in Vietnam.......
