U.S. Inquiry Finds Russians Passed Spy Data to Iraq in '03

A Russian spy operation provided information on U.S. war plans to Iraqi officials in the early days of the war, documents show.

WASHINGTON — Russian diplomats passed detailed but sometimes inaccurate information about American troop movements to senior Iraqi officials even as U.S. troops closed in on Baghdad during the 2003 invasion, according to a Pentagon study released Friday.
The revelations, based on captured Iraqi intelligence documents, could jeopardize U.S.-Russian relations more than any single event since the end of the Cold War, analysts said. Although they cautioned that Moscow might have an explanation, the analysts said some of the details were so sensitive that they would be difficult for the government of President Vladimir V. Putin to justify.
One of the documents, which purports to be a summary of a letter sent to Saddam Hussein's office by a Russian official, claimed that Moscow had "sources inside the American Central Command in Doha," the U.S. military's headquarters in Qatar during the war.

MOSCOW, March 25 -- Russia's foreign spy agency denied Saturday that Moscow had given former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein information on U.S. troop movements and plans during the invasion of Iraq, while analysts speculated that the Pentagon claim was tied to a growing rift between the West and the Kremlin.
A Pentagon report Friday cited two seized Iraqi documents as saying Russia obtained information from sources "inside the American Central Command" in Qatar and passed battlefield intelligence to Hussein through the former Russian ambassador in Baghdad.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service dismissed the claims.
It took them awhile to say anything!
We simply must pull whatever "favored trading partner" status or the like from Russia...they tried to lead to our defeat...that's not the actions of a friend, or even an neutral party.
It took them a while but maybe they're starting to realize they can't sit back and ignore what's going to get out anyway.
Well...Bush did look into Putin's soul and found a swell fella ;)
The one interesting thing from this entire story...which few grasp unless you read twice...the Russians got their data from an inside source...yep, pointing towards CENTCOM itself. The type of data they passed to the Iraqis...either came from breaking into their network, or by a human source. Either way, you've got a major issue now. A couple of years have passed now...and it will be hard to track who knew what and might be considered a suspect. And the search might not even be worth it...if it was your network or a bugging device. This part of the story is just as interesting as the Russians being named.
I bet they are going to Cherry Pick ....watch and see if the links to bin Laden and Saddam training terrorists to go to London show up....this revelation is big enough that they may just print this as the story about the documents....

In one of the Leavenworth documents, it was stated by a high Iraqi official that French leadership (Chirac et. al.) view the US as a big a threat to them as Islamic Terrorism.
Stunning considering that all we have wanted to do since liberating them is to buy their wine, eat their cheese and visit their tourist traps.
The reality is that the anti-Americanism is really all about geopolitics, international oil politics and the envy of our 'hyper power' status.
a thought. this "info/intel" possibly "provided to" the russians could have been an intentional misinformation/misdirection campaign designed and transmitted/leaked, by our war planners to confuse the enemy. our forces in other conflicts used this tactic to great advantage. what do you think?

Oh please. confederatetrappedinmidwest has it exactly rihgt. Europe is so jealous of the US, and while they would probably never wish 911 on their worst enemy, they were secretly happy that the US had it's "comeuppance." And don't waste your breath trying to tell me how Germans stood in solidarity. That lasted like two f&*king minutes until we wanted to invade Iraq and then the Germans staretd crying like a bunch of bitches...probably because they were swinging from Saddam's nutsack. And BTW, your mom can't paint worth a sh&$.
