Why McCain might be it
The Washington Post via The Austin American-Statesman ^ | April 09, 2006 | George Will

First Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, now John McCain and the media. Even torrid relationships are perishable. It was only a matter of time before the media turned on their pin-up, and that time has arrived. A rivulet, soon to be a river, of journalism is reporting — as a mystery deciphered, even a scandal unearthed — that McCain, who occupies the Senate seat once held by Barry Goldwater, is a conservative Republican.

He has been unmasked as a "pro-life, pro-family, fiscal conservative." Those words are his, and are a reasonably accurate self-description of the man who voted against the prescription drug entitlement and the most recent transportation bill because of their costs.

McCain proclaims his extravagant admiration for Teddy Roosevelt, a man of many virtues, not one of which was moral modesty. Speaker of the House Thomas Reed once said to TR, "If there is one thing for which I admire you more than anything else, Theodore, it is your original discovery of the Ten Commandments." St. John of Arizona can seem insufferably certain that he has cornered the market on incorruptibility. So as he begins trying to assemble a presidential majority, he seems, as anyone trying to do that will, like a run-of-the-mill sinner.

But his quest for the Republicans' 2008 nomination was bound to require tactics inconsistent with his carefully cultivated reputation for unexampled authenticity. He has endorsed teaching "intelligent design" theory in schools, and has sought a detente with Jerry Falwell, one of "the agents of intolerance" he denounced in 2000. But who has ever assembled a presidential constituency without endorsing positions formerly avoided or compromising positions formerly endorsed?

McCain is considered compromised because he now favors making permanent some of President Bush's tax cuts that McCain opposed when they were first proposed. But enacting the...

"McCain would beat Hillary in an electoral rout not seen since 1984."

Not with my vote.

Absolutely not. I would never vote for anyone that to my knowledge supports teaching "intelligent design" as if it were science. ID is not science and science education in America has enough problems without teaching mysticism and philosophy as if they're science. Who knows what future scientist's achievements could potentially get aborted by teaching him unscientific nonsense as if it were science??

In theory, Tancredo would be the best pic but I don't think he's a winnable candidate.

My thoughts exactly. We need to start a grassroots campaign and bring this guy upto the front. And let's not keep saying he's not winnable, it doesn't help. He is already the frontrunner at the FReep polls which means something.

Carnac: Why McCain might be it...

Ed: Ho ho ho!

Carnac: Because every conservative running has dropped out, and we all forget there are third parties begging to be considered.

Ed: Hey-AHHHH!

The only way a RINO like McCain gets my vote is if he's got a gun to my head. I'd rather 'waste' my vote on a third party conservative than REALLY waste my vote on an insane nutbag like him.

And for anyone still remotely considering that dirtbag--Senator Keating Five McCain, lately Mr. "Campaign Reform," didn't vote against the 'bridge to nowhere' when he could have stood tall against pork and had it COUNT instead of grandstanding.

Funny how demoRATs love to pick our candidates for us. I'm certain they have our best interests in mind.

I'd pick Cynthia McKinney for them.

You're welcome!

You are a hoot and a half, FO. You are nothing but the biggest Ah-nold shill on FR, and yet McCain ain't Conservative enough for you. As erratic and nutty as McCain is, he looks like a John Bircher compared to the liberal fraud in Sacramento, whom in your eyes poops platinum bars. Hypocrisy ain't just a creek in Greece.

If it's Hillary he's running against, I'll be dragging everyone I can to vote for him.

I cast my last vote for McCain years ago. I did something two years ago when he ran for re-election that I had never done before, and never want to do again, Voted Libertarian. If McCain is the nominee, I will do it again, no matter who he is up against.

"What do all of you have against Romney?"

I don't think the American people will put a Mormon in the White House.

At a family dnner today, my Grandmother and two of her friends were talking about the elections. They asked about Mitt. Someone said "he is a Mormon". My grandmother who is very politically astute, well read and well educated, asked "does he have more than one wife"?

That is what most Americans believe about Mormons. The other problem with Mitt would be the Evangelical Christian base who believes the Church of Mormon is the Church of the anti-Christ.

I have nothing against Mormons, I have a problem with his new Hillary Health Care that he's pushing.

I hope McCain wins that way I can accept the fact that America is over , donesville and just live keeping to myself and accept the fact that it was nice while it lasted, rose real fast and fell real fast and at least I got to be part of it. It has been excruciating trying to remind Americans of their heritage, of what America was founded for, people don't care, the Left has so emasculated this country that people aren't even aware of how lame they've become. Rome fell as much because of its multiculturalist trend as it did from the barbarians sword. Thats the meaning of its all Greek to me. Let it be.

-a re-elected Hillary Clinton is rampant, hitherto unenthralled Republicans might suddenly consider McCain as virtuous

-McCain could "put California in play." McCain might be the only conceivable Republican nominee who could.

If all that is accurate and McCain is a "conservative Republican" now and will remain so then he actually has my vote in the bag. What is not mentioned is that he has fully supported our troops in Iraq, another big plus.

Not voting and having Hillary as President could NEVER be an option under ANY circumstance. Those who would accept Hillary because they simply don't like McCain are absolute dangerous fools, Trolls and worse.

I don't want to hijack this thread and turn it into a crevo thread, when there are plenty of those we can find opportunity to debate on.

And, I've made my views on every aspect of this crystal clear enough on the crevo threads.

So, let's just leave at this: For many reasons, this merely being the proverbial final straw, pigs will fly through a blizzard in hell before I vote for McCain.
