Movie Promotion Confused With Bomb in L.A.
Saturday April 29, 2006 10:46 PM
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - A newspaper promotion for Tom Cruise's upcoming ``Mission: Impossible III'' got off to an explosive start when a county arson squad blew up a news rack, thinking it contained a bomb.
The confusion: the Los Angeles Times rack was fitted with a digital musical device designed to play the ``Mission: Impossible'' theme song when the door was opened. But in some cases, the red plastic boxes with protruding wires were jarred loose and dropped onto the stack of newspapers inside, alarming customers.
Sheriff's officials said they rendered the news rack in this suburb 35 miles north of downtown Los Angeles ``safe'' after being called to the scene by a concerned individual who thought he'd seen a bomb.
Times officials said the devices were placed in 4,500 randomly selected news boxes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties in a venture with Paramount Pictures designed to turn the ``everyday news rack experience'' into an ``extraordinary mission.''

"Military agents capture Sayyaf militant"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MILITARY agents captured Saturday an Abu Sayyaf militant, whose group is tied to terrorist al-Qaeda network, in the southern Philippine island of Basilan, officials said.
Officials said Abdusalih Dimah was nabbed in Basilan's Kapayawan village around 6.30 a.m. after weeks of surveillance operation by army and military agents. A gun was seized from Dimah, they said.
The military implicated Dimah in the 2001 kidnapping of 20 holidaymakers, including three US citizens -- Kansas missionary couple Martin and Gracia Burnham and Californian Guillermo Sobero, in the posh Dos Palmas resort in the central Philippine island of Palawan.
Officials said security forces were tracking down other members of the Abu Sayyaf group hiding on Basilan Island in northernmost of the Sulu Archipelago.
Security forces on Monday also captured an Abu Sayyaf member, Sharie Amiruddin, who is also known by his nom de guerre as Abu Omar, in Zamboanga City.
The military also linked Amiruddin to the Dos Palmas kidnapping and the spate of bomb attacks in the southern Philippines.
Intelligence reports tied Amiruddin to previous bomb attacks in Jolo Island and Zamboanga City and the kidnappings of Filipinos in Basilan island the past years."
Will be posting on your thread later tonight. This Mayday signifies a definite call for help by those of us who want our nation's laws respected and upheld.
I'd like to give you a pep talk about how that changes soon, but for some of us, it seems to be the case until we retire - (the more you make - the more you spend! LOL!)

Body of kidnapped U.S. man found in Mexico
Mercury News/AP ^ | Sat, Apr. 29, 2006 | Staff

TIJUANA, Mexico - The body of a U.S. citizen kidnapped nearly three weeks ago has been found in Tijuana by police, who said he had been beaten, strangled, stripped naked and stashed in the trunk of a car.
Investigators said Saturday that they found the remains of George Kwok Choi Chu, a seafood wholesaler who worked in Tijuana but lived across the border in San Diego, on Friday morning. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City identified the victim simply as George Chu.
Chu was kidnapped April 11 in front of his business near downtown Tijuana, according to the embassy. It was unclear whether the car that contained Chu's body belonged to him.
His body's state of decomposition suggested he had been dead for days before being found, police said.
Chu was kidnapped three days after another U.S. businessman, Yong Hak Kim, was abducted as he drove to his job as a top administrator of Amex Manufacturing in eastern Tijuana.
Kim was able to escape the small home where he was being held about 24 hours later, when his kidnappers fell asleep.
Tijuana's booming assembly-for-export business has led to many businesspeople living in the United States and commuting to factories on the Mexican side of the border.
