Minutemen to Bush: Build Fence or We Will
Associated Press ^ | ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN

Posted on 04/20/2006 6:12:54 AM PDT by 300magnum

TUCSON, Ariz. - Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will.

Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course — "You can't get through to the president any other way" — to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25.

Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.

"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."

Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well.

"Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border."

But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished.

Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex:

Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top.

Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside.

"It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure."

Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment.

Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot.

Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said.

"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.

He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow.

My forbears came to the United States legally, obeyed the laws, paid taxes, and in due time became citizens. My ancestors all spoke English when they arrived on these shores, but many millions did not, yet learned the language and customs of this nation and became as good a group of citizens as did my particular forbears. Furthermore, they did not demand a full panoply of cradle to grave social services. About the only thing they received from government was a public education, and a better one than what we have now. Those who came later from my ancestors, through Ellis Island, were also screened for diseases and quarantined or even returned if they were too ill. (Remember the scene in The Godfather Part II where a young Vito Corleone, just arrived from Sicily, was quarantined for several months by U.S. public health officials.) Illegal aliens are not so screened. The reappearance of certain diseases in this country, such as tuberculosis, can be blamed on these people.

It is an insult to compare the law abiding, assimilating, immigrants of old, my ancestors included, and for that matter, those who use legal means to enter America today, with the hordes of law defying people who refuse to assimilate and demand a full range of welfare services and rights that do not exist in their native lands. The most radical of them demand that the Southwest become "Atzlan", separate from the United States and united with Mexico. At the rallies, Communist and Hispanic racist banners were quite evident, unless you get your news from the MSM.

The United States is a nation, just as Mexico, Italy, Nigeria, etc. A nation is defined, in part, by physical borders. It is not a public space for everyone on the planet who wants to come here. If you don't like the idea of national sovereignty, perhaps you would be more comfortable over at DU, where your co-thinkers reside in great numbers.

I'm for regime change in Mexico. We need to put our own puppet in there and put things to rights. We do NOT need them to be part of our country though.

I am a Native New Mexican, fourth generation. New Mexico is a combination of many different cultures and much the better for it.

Again...native does NOT tell me if you are a resident now....does it? Are you a New Mexico land owner & resident? ...now don't make me research your answer and expose you!

There you go with that bull_hit "cultures" crap..... Either you are an American or you are NOT an American.... The line is drawn...

You know those figures are spurious. Don't expect everyone to roll over just because you claim to be an engineer geek.

I have a feeling this troll is one of the "Mexico will get our land back" people. Sounds like he's Mexican, not American.

Why don't they just build the Berlin Wall while they're at it?

Wow did not take long for someone to bring out that red herring... The Berlin wall was about keeping a population trapped within borders. A fence on the US border is about keeping people who come here illegally out!

Besides, the Berlin wall was in Berlin. Why should we build a wall in Berlin? Our biggest problem is on our southron border. Let the Germans build the Berlin Wall with their own illegals.

Just estimates, buddy. I'm sure the accounting types will be able to account for all the sales tax, labor, fuel, etc, etc... I think the MM estimate of $150/ft factored all that in, but who knows.

I'm more of the manager type anyway, not the geek type ;)

"They just want a better life for themselves and their families"

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. There are millions waiting in eurasia to legally immigrate to the usa, they will never get the change when 1 million illegals enter our country every year. Where is your compassion for those legally waiting thier turn? Where is your compasion for the over taxed American forced to pay health/welfare and education costs of millions and millions of gate crashers? Why don't you open your home to those in your town that "just want a better life?".

Thanks, amigo. Sorry for the harsh tone, but I have a feeling that there are ways to do it for much less, especially if private citizens do it. If the government does it, you're probably right on the money.

The so called "Minute Men" have become an embarrassment to America and a disgrace to the name they have stolen.

Your opinion is duly noted. Then again, you know what they say about opinions.

Next time you are in a movie theater or waiting for a table at a restuarant, please tell all the people behind you to jump ahead and go before you.

After all, you don't think that anyone should be denied getting what they want by having to go through a process that causes any inconvienence.

There are plenty of good people waiting to get into America legally. Those are having to wait longer because of all of the line jumpers.

So what are you doing? You're screwing those who want to follow the law to support those who can't be bothered with the law. You're screwing the immigrants in favor of the criminals.

And you have the gall and audacity to call people names. You are hateful and spiteful towards the law and those that wish to follow it.
