Minutemen to Bush: Build Fence or We Will
Associated Press ^ | ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN

Posted on 04/20/2006 6:12:54 AM PDT by 300magnum

TUCSON, Ariz. - Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will.

Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course — "You can't get through to the president any other way" — to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25.

Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.

"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."

Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well.

"Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border."

But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished.

Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex:

Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top.

Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside.

"It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure."

Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment.

Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot.

Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said.

"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.

He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow.

You are a troll.

A big, fat, liberal troll.

I was going to respond to your comments one by one, but decided against it.

They are so obviously STUPID so as to earn no response.

Other than... STFU!

(to all other Freepers, I apologize. I don't usually get so angry)

Good point. There is nothing logical about a nation without borders. It is an oxymoron.

I don't blame them for wanting to come here, I blame us for letting them.

A secure border is vital for national security.

Your sentiments are short sighted emotion based, much like a typical liberal.

Your rhetoric is offensive, your position in favor of a completely open border is ridiculous, IMO, but I'm will to give you the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

You seem to dodge tough questions, but here's a couple questions that your answers to answers would help me understand you a little better.

My we jump right into the Ad-hominem attacks don't we.

Sorry, didn't mean to insult your POV.

Come on my friend, do you really think people weren't kept out by the Berlin Wall as well. Oh... oops I forgot... the reds didn't mind anyone coming into East Germany... just so long as they didn't take anyone out...I guess when I was there in the 60s, my sight deceived me when I saw the border guards and their RIFLES TRAINED ON ME when I came to the wire...sure didn't look like they wanted me to come on in...:-)

Our forefathers fought the Revolutionary War, trying to cast off their own Government.. that of course was a "legal" action in those days...(think before you answer this one...)

Protect us from invasion... yeah right... I feel real threats from those illegal aliens... AAMOF, I am more afraid of you and your need to swear...:-)and your desire to pick a fight over a simple subject such as freedom.

Do you think a nation should exercise control over the flow of non-citizens into its territory?

Absolutely. Until such time as those non-citizens have met the requirements and TAKEN THE OATHS of citizinship.

Cute, ain't they?

Used to see them out in the desert past Ryan field west of Tucson, sunning themselves on a rock. Didn't get close, though....that would be a mistake.

Yes, but the Berlin Wall worked...no one ran to West Berlin through the Wall.

Not true - lots of people made it across. Of course, there were also hundreds who died in the attempt, but there were thousands of successful escapes out of East Germany.

"They have no understanding of freedom, so they see no difference between a wall of protection and a wall meant to enslave or hold a population captive."

I see, the way to keep people free is to place a wall around them, much the same way the feudal barons did, and to make sure no one gets in to steal, rob or plunder from their castle? I do see your point. I now realize that for me to be free, I must erect a wall to keep out those who are not free. This will in deed protect my freedoms.

Free people, in order to keep their freedom, must not allow themselves to become polluted by those they do not want in. This pollution will ruin the pure things I have learned to treasure and keep me free.

Baloney!! IMHO, if I were really free, my fear of pollution would not exist. I would welcome those who may pollute, because they can not harm me.

My friend, it is our fear that you mistake for freedom. We don't need to imprison ourselves within a wall to be free. Yes we can come in or go out of our castle, but someday we must face those who do not dwell within. If we can not, then we are truly not free, but in a prison worse than you and I can ever imagine.

I am at work and don't have time to play 20 questions but I will answer this one because it is quick and to the point.

Are you aligned with an organization that has protested against HR 4437?

No I am not, but I personally oppose HR 4437 and I think it is a stain on America's reputation.

I have not participated in any of the protests but if I happen to encounter one on the street I will take time out to join the protest.

I am not liberal my friend. I guess those who disagree with you are easier to tag than to disagree with. I have many moderate and conservative views. Just not ultra-right.

FYI, I too am retired airborne having served my country in the 82nd ABN and proud of it. I see no need to tee you off either, so have a nice day...BTW, if you are really airborne, you will know how to act with the integrity and respect that was taught to you while serving. I was taught to sacrifice my life for a fellow ranger...how about you?

As a new Freeper, I see that those who can not discuss with words, resort to Ad-hominem attacks to get their point across. I have only been here 2 days, but I am much the wiser than before...

National security is truly needed, but a wall isn't the answer. Russia's claim to fame during the Cold War was the same. For anyone who thinks they closed the borders to just keep people in, need to think why we couldn't just walk in and chat with our long lost relatives.

I don't blame these people with either, but I have worked with some of the illegals and I have a different opinion of their worth. I once held that they were the bad guys. Not so sure that is the case. Guess that makes me a liberal cause I have compassion for them...If I suggest shooting them on sight, will that get me a better tag here?

I am not a liberal, but some of my views are moderate in my older age..

Guess...I need to pick my way through the shards very carefully or I'll get smacked about a bit in here...

It WOULD get the message across, lol! We keep getting solicitation calls for donations which I have been refusing but it would blow their minds to tell them this!

Must be Mexican?

Nope.

Irish, German, English, Scottish, Cherokee, and Choctaw. But no Mexican that I am aware of. In other words, 100% American Mongrel.
